When I was learning to sew many years ago, my mother explained that trimming every single thread was a detail that makes expensive items "look expensive". Most steps in manufacturing are performed with minimal human assistance. Trimming loose threads is labor intensive, and increases the cost. (A careful trimming of well loved items from you clothes or linen closet will have a similar effect.)

Yay, a fellow sewist! And yes, the trimming and finishing is such a huge difference. Not matching patterns (because matching takes more time and wastes fabric), seams in jeans that bias to the front because they weren’t cut properly on the grainline (which also costs money and time), all little giveaways that the clothes were made cheaply and badly.

I agree with your point on thread trimming, but to your comment on manufacturing, the garment industry actually relies heavily on human labor - in mass-market fashion they're just too rushed (with an inhumane and unreasonable output demand) for that level of attention to detail.

We didn't have a lot of money when I was growing up, so we did our own baking, sewing, etc. (I could sew a dress at age 10!) My mom was an excellent teacher when she taught me how to lay out and cut out the pattern pieces; it involved meticulous measuring, especially when dealing with plaids. It is something I have never forgotten, I always look at how stripes and plaids line up. Also, are there threads hanging? Are the seams well pressed? Do they pucker? Are the buttons good quality? Does the zipper go up and down smoothly? Etc. When shopping with my daughter, she wanted a dress...cute dress, but a disaster construction-wise. She told me, "Nobody notices Mom."...but they really do! I did not buy the dress.

My mother taught me to sew. One thing she taught when choosing fabric was to ball up a fistful of the cloth in one hand. She would hold it for a moment and then release. This would reveal the fabric's tendency to hold on to wrinkles. You can do the same with retail clothing. Learn to sew if you ever get the opportunity or at least try to read through a book on "how to sew". Even if you never sew your own clothes, you learn to recognize quality construction when you shop for clothes. Now that I am a retired senior woman, I buy most of my casual clothing in the men's wear department. In general men's casual wear is better constructed and made of higher quality fabric. I stand six feet tall and need the extra length in the leg and sleeve. Also, I prefer a loose fit too when I'm running errands or working around the house.

The trend toward low rise jeans is what created the short zipper and the barely there back, not cheapness. Extremely expensive brands had this design. Lack of hardware, too, can be a design choice among very expensive brands. The matching of fabric patterns at the seam is a sign of good quality.

FINALLY….Someone has addressed the non-matching plaid/stripes issue! That problem has always been a deal breaker for me. No ifs, ands or buts about it! So you asked for opinions on your top. I don’t like it on you. Color is definitely an issue. Also, I’ve noticed you wear a lot of higher necklines and I think with the size of your girls, you should reevaluate that choice. I’ll never forget an episode of What Not to Wear where Stacey mentioned that large busted women who wear high necks make their chest look like a ski slope. I pretty much stick with V-necks and button ups now. Bringing my two points together, I think the color of the top against your skin tone is so similar that it makes it look like a high neck. Btw…I only say this because you said you can take it. 😉 Thanks for all the wonderful content!

I agree, I never tumble-dry any clothes unless I want to shrink something made of cotton, like before hemming jeans. The heat and friction of tumble-drying really wears out clothes fast and breaks down any stretch like elastane or elastic waistbands. I only use my dryer for sheets, towels and cotton socks.

I never use the dryer on my clothes as some users pointed out - to prevent pilling or excessive wear. I also buy only natural fabrics. Not sure about the longevity of your pink sweater - is it acrylic based? Another tip is to condition and shine your leather handbags and foot ware. Even a great quality boot will look cheap if it isn’t maintained

I really don't pay that much attention if somebody has on a pair of Walmart jeans or $500 pair designer jeans. People have to buy clothes according to their budget. I feel like if you have a neat and clean appearance that's really that's all that's needed.

@@valenciaorange2000 I have to agree with you. These days people are scratching and scraping to survive. Her video makes people feel insecure about their clothes. But I'm here to say don't feel that way. When you're out in public people are not looking at you that hard to see if you have hardware on your jeans or not. Honestly I could care less if you bought your clothes at Nordstrom's or Goodwill. I care about the human being not what they have on.

When a pattern is laid out on fabric it needs to be straight with the grain unless it is supposed to be cut on the bias. The garment that creeps around has not been cut correctly. One of my pet peeves is when patterns such as plaids are not matched on seams. It really looks cheap. A good seamstress knows how to match these designs. Thank you for your videos. It drives me crazy when they are on the girls or on other parts , for example on a swimsuit with a print everywhere except the crotch or vs. Or on a blazer with the buttons like nipples. I’m also busty and I think sizing up in knits, rather than wearing the smallest possible size, is a lot more flattering. You wanted an honest opinion on the pink sweater you’re wearing, so, I think it’s just too tight on you. Tight sweaters make me feel really self-conscious about my larger bust, because they make men stare at it. You have plenty of room in the shoulders to size up at least one size, it would look better.

I love your content and your energy! Since you asked, I don't think the pink blouse does you justice: you're right, the color washes you out, and the shoulder detail reads too fussy on your frame. The sleeveless caramel tank, on the other hand, looked absolutely gorgeous on you- so sleek and streamlined, it's really your silhouette :) A tip for washing clothes that are too delicate to wash often: put them in a lingerie bag before throwing them in the wash on a delicate cycle, then air dry (throw them over a dining room/kitchen chair or stool). Heat and too much tumbling are the enemies of your garments.

I had to figure out the tricks where you look for the way the seams lay on the person and the one where you look at how the fabric pattern throughout the garment matches itself for myself years ago, but it's true that once you see it you cannot unsee it. Right now I have my eye on this buffalo plaid print jacket but the one thing that is keeping me for buying it is that the pattern doesn't match in the back 🙄 it's really disappointing because it's such a cute jacket but I can't find the force to oversee that one detail

The pink sweater has a soft feminine romantic feel and also the lipstick color looks great on you. It’s very natural and effortless on you. Dark lipstick makes me stare directly at your lips because it is too much of a contrast and is unnatural looking. I’ve noticed the lips difference the most. My recommendation is to maybe match your natural lips color for everyday makeup and it will enhance your lips instead of the dark lipstick color. I’m a huge thrifter and I think thrifting is DEFINITELY the way to go for more elaborate pieces-a $10 well-cut wool blazer from the thrift store looks a lot nicer than a $25 polyester one from H&M and a well tailored pair of trousers from the 80s or a fabulous old formal gown still holds up a lot better newer fast fashion dupes when styled right. That being said I do think new is the way to go for jersey and knit pieces to avoid stretching, pilling, and fading, and that’s when shooting for a bit higher quality pays off.

Fun story. The first time I met my surgeon (an expert in tumours. A very expensive-I’m-going-bankrupt-here surgeon) he pulled up in front of our car (we were waiting in the car park) in an old-clapped out farm vehicle. Got out, crumpled see through button down, un combed hair, and weirdly - hay stuck to his shoes. You would NEVER have believed him that he was a world class surgeon. But he is. I think some people just don’t notice these things. I’m currently waiting for him to get back from a safari in Africa(??!?) so he can operate. He’s a funny onion. But he is a brilliant man and I trust him with my life. (Clearly) First impressions do count.

I love a poof sleeve any day, but I think a blouse would suit you better if the poof was and ruffles would decrease in size on the way down to the arm instead of being more bulky towards the bottom. And a shoulder poof would complement your shape. Having the poof towards the middle of the arm can make the arm look heavier/thicker and your shoulder’s too narrow. Ps I have Burberry perfume and every man who has smelled it on me says it smells delicious, I think it’s the vanilla in it. can’t wait to try the Dolce! Thanks 💕💕💕

Fifteen great tips! Thanks Annareid! My husband pointed out cheap tshirt details and now that is all I see. The neck holes on men's tshirts are usually a tip off. When they are "loosey goosey", too wide, lopsided they often look like the wearer tugged and pulled it out of "round". Just can't deal. And thin fabric. Focus on a heavy weight fabric above 6ounce. The fall of the knit is so much nicer when heavier weight cotton. Also, your jeans and or clothing with stretch likely got it by a synthetic such as lycra or spandex. Think of lycra or spandex as plastic. Heat (dryer) destroys plastic and shortens the life of your garment. Delicate wash and spin cycle inside out...but hang or lay flat to dry. NEVER introduce heat.😊

Great tips! I’d say the tank top and red shirt look less cheap as layering pieces. Your pink top has great shoulder detailing, but I think it does look cheap. Perhaps if it’s in a darker color (like navy blue, deep green, or black) it would look higher quality? Also, another tip I like: pay attention to fabric (you mentioned this with jeans). If the sweaters are wool, cashmere, and cotton blend, they’ll look better quality than polyester or acrylic. They’ll feel better on, too.

I'd go up a size in the pink one, it's too clingy which makes it look cheap. I agree with another commenter that the color isn't great. A deeper color would look more expensive and show the detailing better

I think the comments you made about strechy fabrics needing to be heavy also applies on jeans. I'm a very curvy girl (not in weight, but in shape) with a short torso and a short waist and 100% cotton jeans just make me so uncomfortable. At the right size (!) they poke into my stomach when I sit down and they are always super tight on my thighs (even wider leg ones). With stretch they fit me very well, tho. My body shape just needs jeans with stretch in them, or I won't wear jeans or pants for that matter at all. As long as the fabric is a little heavier and thicker, like a levi's for example and ticks all the other boxes you mentioned (metal, curved band, no distresses etc) I think jeans with stretch don't have to look cheap at all

Putting on shank buttons like the ones on your blazer is labor-intensive. It is worth the time to reinforce the sewing so that they don't jiggle around. I am also a huge fan of replacing cheap buttons, especially those really thin "shell" buttons with better quality buttons, which can be found at a fabric stores or online. Learning to sew on buttons (and hooks & eyes and snaps for that matter) is worthwhile, but, a local sewist, tailor or dry cleaner can easily handle this.

something I do which is probably so unnecessary is before I wear something, I go around with little scissors and trim off any extra fuzz, loose thread, uneven lace, generally anything hanging off that would give off a “cheap” look, even if it’s not expensive

Probably already been said but if an item isn't cut on the straight of grain it moves out of shape. Usually things are cut on the bias which is diagonally and allows movement and it to hug your body not cling (check out original 1930s starlet gowns and you'll see what I mean) or they are cut straight on the grain to make them hang correctly. Sometimes things are cut cross grain as well. Anything other than these can cause the issues experienced in your top, the twisting especially if they are trying to join them to other randomly cut out pieces 🫣 looks horrendous! I make my whole entire wardrobe so that's how I know x

I agree on everything you said! I’m going to disagree with most of the people who mentioned the color of the sweater on you. I do think it washes you out a little. I don’t see you as a light summer because of the contrast of your dark eyes. Even though you have blond hair, I think the intense contrast of your eyes make you better suited to more saturated colors, and colors that are medium in intensity, rather than very pale. I think you look amazing in greens and blues that are medium to dark, and not too muted.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts in a light and loving way. ☺️ I also wanted to point out, I did notice in your little side clip of Scentbird that you sprayed the perfume on your wrist and then rubbed your wrists together. I would only suggest not to do that because rubbing the scent like that can actually change the scent and shorten the timeline of the top and middle notes and leave you only with the base notes of the perfume. Just a little tidbit ♥️

Also, when companies cut corners when cutting, they cut a whole bunch of layers at once to save time and labour. Don’t be surprised when the bottom layers are off grain. Ask anyone who sews how laborious the cutting stage is when done properly. Not only laying out the pattern to not waste fabric but so that it’s on grain. Then when cutting, being careful so that nothing shifts so that it stays on grain. If you’re cutting out a very fitted garment, you need to cut with the fabric in a single layer. If something is cut on the fold, you can’t tell if the fabric on the bottom layer is off grain or not. When you have so many pieces to cut out, it’s a real chore.

If you're worried about fabrics wearing down through washing too often, buy a laundry bag for your delicates. It's basically a meshed bag that zips, buy a few so that each are not over filled. This will help reduce friction in the machine. Also pay attention to washing instructions as most machines have more gentler features as well as lower temperatures to help reduce damage. I've been able to keep my fluffy fabrics silky soft for many years due to this. Another trick I'm trying to get into more is to buy more under layers to help soak up my sweat and oil, so that my nicer clothes on top don't need to be washed as often. Less direct contact with my skin.

Look for matching prints throughout *the entire garment* and note *the cut of the garment* are invaluable tips! I'm a big thrifter, at times I'll find brand new designer items at ridiculously low prices only to realize that they're "irregulars" with these flaws. Note *the fit* of the garment! Another gem! 🙄 How many designer labels have I held on to that fit but were *not flattering* ??? Great advice, thanks!

Hi! Watching for the first time! I really enjoyed your thoughts and how you spoke about fashion in a kind way, without putting people down. The older I get, the more I appreciate trying to invest in clothing and footwear that will last. My style is not sophisticated, you looked great in your shoulder detailed sweater, just not something I could pull off! I feel best in fit and flare styles that empathize my natural waist and skim my tummy! And layers! Thrifting, vintage shopping mixed with contemporary staple pieces is my speed. Anyhow, loved your story about listening to your gut with your mom. My point in all this was, there's something that makes me crazy and I thought of it as you were talking about trimming things. Please help a friend or stranger trim those stretchy clear hang straps at the shoulders of garments! I promise it's not like a warning tag on a pillow. The straps serve a purpose of display while in the store but they just pop out as you wear them once you've got them home. On a good hanger or by folding you can cut them off. Do it- it's like when a tag on your collar flips up. I see that and it's like broccoli in someone's teeth. I guess I'm just that person. I'd want someone to tell me, right? Well that was long! Thank you for your friendly video, I'll be watching for more! Take care!
