00:00 - Intro
01:49 - Ask, "What would the fish and coral want me to do?"
04:22 - Water changes replace everything. People who do them are more successful.
07:09 - The difference between an expert and a mentor is the willingness to weigh
failures along with successes.
10:42 - The best time to start a new tank is when life allows. The best type of tank is what life allows.
14:19 - Everything good or bad that happens is not a the result of a single decision but the result of all decisions.
18:22 - Avoiding pests is wise but learning how to deal with the inevitability of pests is more valuable.
22:57 - Documented compelling evidence produces more progress in the hobby than peer-reviewed science.
28:17 - pH is more important than anyone suspects.
34:40 - Fish and coral don't just die.
37:56 - Success is not defined by what lives, it’s defined by what doesn't die.
40:34 - Stop looking for poisons and start looking for toxins.
43:51 - None of us can ensure an outcome, we can only influence the potential of a desired outcome.
47:25 - There is a difference between a fish tank and a sustainable ecosphere.
51:14 - A once of good council is worth a pound of posts.
54:30 - Choose your own adventure has a poor outcome.

I can't tell you how stoked I am to see the two of you do a vid together. You realise that the combination of your 5 minute guide, 52 weeks of reefing, and ultimate beginner series is what built my tank? You talk about mentors in this vid- well dude, the two of you are the primary mentors to many of us I can promise you that. Keep on kicking ass both of you, and thanks for guiding us to success in this awesome hobby (lifestyle)!

Thanks, that will be the approach with 52 weeks as well. One week of science, biology, and why we do it. The following week the tools to achieve the goals.

3:23 I always explain it as, picture yourself inside a bubble constantly breathing. That fresh air is eventually going to be gone. Now if you for once a week just open the bubble up and let some fresh air in, you'll be much better off and survive.

Congrats on making 15 years! I started in the hobby back in the early 2000s and then got out of it for a while. When I came back recently the biggest game changer in the entire hobby for me was the Bulk Reef Supply videos. Everything was so much easier with some videos that broke down complex concepts and explained them in plain english. I definitely have you guys to thank for going as far as I have this time around.

You are for sure my mentor. I watched every single video months before starting my tank. It’s a 40 breeder with 20 gallon sump w/fuge. Although it’s small with a handful of fish, invertebrates, and corals it has been very successful and brings me loads of joy. I’m glad I found your channels when I did. Thank you for making this hobby so enjoyable for us beginners.

Totally agree completely about you guys touching on making sure it’s the right time to set up a tank, I was amidst a massive downstairs renovation, which included a 500 litre in wall tank, the custom install had eaten a vast amount of time anyway but I decided to fill up the tank, run through cycling and added fish and corals, it was the single most stressful thing I ever did as I was trying to protect the tank mid renovation, had to consider noise and paint fumes, and the tank required the daily maintenance that was taking time away from the renovation, luckily (not really the correct term) I had a white spot outbreak because I rushed and I chose to move my fish and coral to a Red Sea 170, after copper treatment it forced my hand to shut the big tank down and power on with the renovation, you really need time for this hobby to do it right, I loved that you guys touched on that

Love #10, my tank has been up about a year. So far have lost 2 hermits and a cyphastrea. I tried moving it a couple times to lower light, but unfortunately never looked great after it arrived. All other coral and fish alive so far 🤞🏽

Really enjoyed this - validated much of my approach to the hobby after 12 years of doing it. One thing, respectfully Ryan - your use of the word “council” - if you mean “advice” the word you’re looking for is “counsel.” I’m a stickler for correct usage lol. Looking forward to the next 15 years! 👍🏻

Matt that's one thing I like about watching your videos you do concentrate on the beginners and that's so important Advance obvious don't need to have them set up a tank they already achieve that it's the beginners that need to be taught I've been doing this hobbies for over 30 years I remember starting out with just a back filter under gravel filters and we got cotton and sand out of our pet store and that would start our bacteria I remember what I'll be pretty emphasized on having no phosphates or nitrates in the tank and now all sudden it's a big deal man things have changed another thing I've learned in the hobby you don't need all that fancy Yuppie Stuff

A series for an intermediate/advanced reefer should not start from an empty tank. Most have a reef and want to better understand what they actually have and how they should take it to the next level (could also be making it simpler to be able to continue reefing when life inevitably changes).

I've tested out multiple methods to increase PH. I've tried co2 scrubbers, refugiums, trying to oxygenate more, kalkwasser, etc. The best way I've found is to use an Apex to turn an Ecotech Versa on/off that doses a kalkwasser reactor full of Sodium Hydroxide. Calcium Hydroxide just wasn't strong enough, and I was dosing more than the evap rate to keep my PH up. Sodium hydroxide is so much stronger that just a tiny bit pegs my PH 24/7/365 with minimal dosing. My PH sits between 8.35 and 8.36, until my kalkwasser reactor needs to be topped up with RODI.

Would love a video about fish lifespans! The fish dont just die thing got me a lil... none of my fish are younger than 15yrs... one day this will happen where they just randomly pass. How can ya tell when something is legit just getting old. 5-7 yr captive lifespan is no help to me anymore😅

So much Information. STill trying to find a set of lists-- fish, cleaners and Coral for a 30gal w 20g sump. different lists options. what goes with what. etc. multiple lists of fish and corals cleaners. i see top 10's but not full tank stock lists.

There is so much personal preference in this hobby that it's hard to give you a specific stock list. Your vision of your dream tank is probably different from the next reefer. If you post up your stock list ideas, we're always happy to review!

Great to see Matthew in Minnesota! So yeah that #7 did rub the wrong way. If we actually had a lot of peer-reviewed science, that would produce progress, and the complete absence of that is the problem. The compelling evidence that isn't scientific hasn't produced progress at all- that seems obvious- but it has produced the flip-flops of advice you've discussed here (...and thus sold a lot of snake oil- this too is a fact I'm afraid). "Zero nitrates! Wait- not zero nitrates!" Etc. So much of what passes for sound advice in the hobby is baloney. The fact is, no one knows enough about what's going on in tanks biologically, and an awful lot of hobbyists can't reason scientifically because they lack enough scientific education. Among those who have the education, there's also the desire to DO the hobby in the first place, which tends to produce optimism that doesn't leave enough room for skepticism (which leads to your #7 principle...) The practices we do have that work are based on science (eg. break surface tension to achieve gas exchange). We need more science, not more "I did X and then Y happened, so did 15 people I know, therefore X causes Y". Or "So and so has a great tank and does X, therefore, if you don't do X, you're gonna regret it".

Stop devaluing this as being "not peer-reviewed science." Think about those words for a second. I would say this is science in the truest sense of the word - and WE are the peers reviewing your evidence and findings. Oxford says: /ˈsīəns/ noun: science the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.
