7:48 "It's not what you did, son, that angers me so; it's who you did it to." This is such good writing. Not only does it reinforce what we've begun to gather -- that John Wick isn't someone you want to mess with -- but it also tells us that the father here is a villain, since he would have been perfectly fine with his son killing someone _else's_ dog and stealing their car.

This movie does a masterful job of pulling in the viewer by showing and not telling. All the details that are taken as common by the characters that we have no context for, these make us try to figure out how it all fits together. Small steps like figuring out his wife died, who John Wick is, the gold coins, how the Continental operates, each is designed to make us stay invested. It's brilliantly done. My favorite detail: The framing of him walking with the dog at the end is the same spot that his wife collapsed at the beginning.

This is, by FAR, my favorite "You have NO IDEA who you just F'ed with!" movie. Braveheart and The Patriot are the closest... Keanu Reeves took up the sport of "3-Gun" shooting during training for this role. He's pretty good! There are videos of him running sport-courses... His gun handling in the movie, while still having some "movie" elements, is some of the best every filmed.... this coming from a competition shooter and firearms trainer.

They're a legit championship 3-gun training course, and do things like self defense shooting, pistol courses, rifle courses and even knife-throwing. There's a LOT of footage of Keanu, Halle and Jon on the course they trained at for JW 3 (and The Punisher). I can't remember if it was Herrera, Donut or Demo Ranch, but one of them went to that course to train 3-gun with the pros and bumped into Jon during a video while he was doing a knife course. Side note: Berry even learned how to train attack dogs for 3, and how to command them to do the stunts her dogs did in the movie. She trained her... Poodle, IIRC... To be a guard dog after the movie as an aside, using the very techniques she learned for the film. Supposedly, she was very good with the dogs and learned a lot about it. That's what happens when stunt men run the show (as the Wick movies have been).

I think the base motivation, they build in this movie, is one of the best, if not the best, I have ever seen in an action movie. The moment they kill this cute little puppie everione is immediatly behind John, and they are OK with what he does. I have seen plenty of reactions to this and it works every time. Even (and sometimes especially) women, who are generally averse to excessive violence in movies are on board when they kill the dog. That was such a smart piece of writing. 😄

They got Bridget Moynahan, an actress with a significant amount of star power in her own right, to play the role of John Wick’s deceased wife. Willem Dafoe's character takes the job of killing John Wick after he asks if it is an exclusive contract. So his intention was all along to protect John Wick. It is an easy thing to miss when you see it the first time and you get the impression he intends to kill hired but in a rewatch it you can see it is not something he what to do and only take it when he knows other people will be after John Wick as a way. That way he can help his friend and a the same time try to avoid any troubles.

This movie is a great lesson in subtle storytelling. Even the lighting color scheme works to convey emotion. During the times when Helen is alive, golds and yellows. After she's gone, cold blues. After Daisy is killed, the film gets subtly sharper and the contrast is increased as John now has something to focus on. And after it is all done, he goes home down the same path where Helen collapsed and while the colors have not returned to normal, they are not as drab. Then there is the actions Viggo takes. Every time there is a threat to himself, he hides behind his men. It really shows how Iosef became such a spoiled brat.

There's a screenwriting "how to" book called Save the Cat. Its title comes from the first thing the author advises you put in your movie: have your protagonist "save the cat" (or similar) so the audience immediately likes and roots for them. This movie shows that the opposite works as well: have your antagonist kill the dog.

I'm remembering a roundtable with the creators talking about all the little things they wanted to do with the movie. They reacted to some of the 'fan favorite' clips and comments and built up what was going on to answer questions or explain the framework, and you're completely correct. The writers had decided they wanted John not to be the stereotypical hero, but to be 'the bad guy that kills bad guys'. So the question was 'how do we make that happen?', and the answer was simple. They needed to make something HORRIBLE happen in the first half-hour that would cement sympathy for him as the placeholder 'hero' of the film, despite him being every bit as bad a guy as the 'bad guys'. So he tries to be a good person. Tries to make his girlfriend and wife happy. Tries to clean his act up. Tries to be the best man for her that he can be- And then she dies. But she prepares this gift to remind him how proud she was that he'd left it all behind for her. Then some shitbag kills the dog, and EVERYBODY hates when an adorable puppy dies. Who can blame a grieving widower losing his shit when the last thing his wife did for him gets taken away? I certainly couldn't blame him. Also, fun fact. The 'Oh' was originally going to be either 'whoah' or 'wow' in the script, but the writers decided not to make the 'whoah' meme follow Keanu to John Wick. They changed it to 'oh', and it thankfully stuck.

They didn't really beat John and kill his dog over the car. It was about Iosef's humiliation. Throughout the film, we are shown how little Ioseph means. The only power or respect he gets is because he's the son of a powerful and respected crime lord. At the gas station, Iosef tries to assert his dominance by using money to buy John's car . But John dismissed him, saying "the cars not for sale." John didn't even stop to consider it. Even worse, Iosef was shown to be powerless in front of his goons. Humiliation. Iosef needed to reassert his dominance n front of his goons. So, Iosef made a threat to John, but he said it in a language that he thought John couldn't understand. That threat was mostly for the benefit of his goons, so they could see Iosef reassert his power. But John did understand Iosef's threat. When John said "Not this bitch", he was telling Iosef that he was utterly powerless. And his goons just made the situation worse by pulling Iosef away, trying to protect him like he's a child. At that point, the only way to assert his dominance again was by beating up John, killing his dog and taking his car

I love this film so much !! There are so many little nuances to this film. And multiple things you can notice. Like the fact that you can track Vigo's mental mind frame, by his alcohol/drug usage. He starts off by breaking out the really expensive stuff, because who cares now? Then moves on to Vodka, then I think it's cocaine, then finally just smoking weed and looking for his gun in the back seat of his own car. In addition, you can tell who's going to win in any fight, by the background color. Whenever someone steps into John's blue light of death, they die a second later. It turns red when people are safe, and it turns purple when John gets shot. But then shifts back to blue a second later before he kills the guy. Lastly, this film is about respect. And what happens when respect isn't earned. John asked the body guard if he lost weight. The body guard responds with a specific number in Russian. It's been noticed that the subtitled translation is actually wrong. HOWEVER, it IS, the number of guys John's about to kill. Even the body guard was telling John how many guys there were. I recommend watching this film again. There are so many things that no one sees the first time.

The Continental exists so that everyone in this world has a safe spot. No one can conduct "business" there...as you saw. Perkins was stupid and greedy to take on the contract against John, not just because of his skill set, but because she did it on Continental grounds. John should have killed her after she tried to kill him in his room. Viggo was played by Mikael Nyqvist, a wonderful Swedish actor. Before this, he was best known for his role as Mikael Blomqvist in the 'Millennium' Trilogy films based on the worldwide best-selling novels by Steig Larsson...'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo', 'The Girl Who Played With Fire' and 'The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest' opposite Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander, the "Girl" of the titles. These films are in Swedish, and they did a remake in English of 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as Mikael and Lisbeth. Unfortunately, Nyqvist passed just a couple of years after 'John Wick' was released. These films owe a LOT to The Matrix films... - Chad Stahelski (the director) was Keanu's stunt double on the first, and stunt coordinator on the second and third, and even had a small role in the recent fourth one. Chad and Keanu are friends. - The main bodyguard with the square jaw who threw John to the ground in the nightclub is Daniel Bernhardt, a stuntman and actor, who played Agent Johnson in the second Matrix film. - The doctor who patched up John was Randall Duk Kim, and he played The Keymaker in the second Matrix. There are more Matrix easter eggs in the other 'John Wick' films.

I think around the 4th or 5th film is when john will learn that someone had a hand in his wife's sickness/death through giving her something secretly radiation wise or disease in a drink or food that way it will lead up to the final crochet endo in the very final movie

Really good reaction! Really enjoyed it! The scene with the cop at his door is _so_ *very* good! You can see him (the cop) working it out in his head ... OK, not working, but he's dealing with something - probably something from his past 'coming back for him'; he seems to figure that it's probably some 'bad guys' that John took care of, so why sweat it? ... fewer bad guys wandering around now, so it's all good, and I won't have to worry about facing them myself! He's probably thinking "thanks for the service, John!"

You asked John Wick (Keanu Reeves) was born Jardani Jovonovich in Belarus. He was an orphan, and was taken in by the Tarasov Russian Mafia where he was raised as an assassin. He was so ruthless that the mafia boss Viggo Tarasov respected and feared him. Peace out.

I loved your reaction to this. In my mind I saw what I could only describe as a Viking Maiden response to the action/justified violence John carried out. All the while trying to press your lips together as to conceal your glee at it all especially your attraction to the main character in those moments. It is refreshing to see this combination of beauty, femininity and not just being able to cope with the necessary violence but thrive in it. So, yeah, Viking Maiden, who speaks French.

Minor spoilers of a joke in John wick 2. John has to go to Rome, and he stays at the Roman continental hotel and speaks with its manager. The manager asks John if he is in Rome to kill the pope. That is the reputation he had. That he can and will kill anyone, no matter what

Fun fact: When Marcus (Willem Dafoe) asks Vigo if it's an open contract on John Wick it's because he knows other assassins will be coming for him, that's why he takes the deal. To protect John.

An ancient order called Assa-sins used to accept only gold as payment (weight in gold) for their services such as espionage, murder, or counterintelligence. It adds to the believability of the movie since there is precedence in real history. Some even argue that this is the origin of the Beggars Guild in China's past as well as the Ninja of Japan. If I may add a personal note, people who do work in military, intelligence and kill or capture squads must keep their feelings firewalled so they don't get in the way of what must be done.

I watched this a few weeks ago and read the description before and thought the story was that his dog got kidnapped. That sounded lame to me but when I watched it and saw Wick get the dog as a gift from his dead wife I instantly changed my mind and thought it was a really good storyline. So I thought the film was going to be about how his dog gets kidnapped and he has to get it back due to it being the last memory of his wife. And then....I realised I had misread it. I reckon it would be better if they had the dog kidnapped.😞

Whats fucked up, is that dog crawled to lay with john before she died. She only knew him for a day, but she loved him unconditionally anyway. So she wanted them to be together till the very end and to lay with john incase he died and she didnt. At first i thought the fucks who killed her placed her body there. But then i saw the blood trail sliding across the floor. Like she was pulling her body across like a snake. God i pray for any soul who even attempts to hurt my dog

I don't really think that the cop (Jimmy) is worried about who John is killing, it's more a case of 'what is HE going to be able to do about it?' (especially if he knows who John is) Jimmy is going to be able to do absolutely nothing about it. So let's just get back in the car and continue the rest of the night like nothing happened.
