In this week's video we’re finally finishing demolishing the reinforced concrete cow mangers!
We're condensing the 150+ man hours that went into clearing out our 63 sqm (678 sqft) barn into 20 minutes of video - mostly because we need the dopamine kick😊 but also because it’s a good opportunity to take you along with our plans for this space.
With a property as big as ours and working on several projects at a time, with mostly just two people, it can feel like nothing’s happening at all, so it’s nice to celebrate the milestones!
We're Isis & Bertus. We moved from The Netherlands into a 200 year old dilapidated farmstead in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. We are slowly and lovingly renovating this old beauty into a home for ourselves and a place where we can welcome others.

We've included a shot of the current plan at the end of the video for reference. Something we haven't mentioned in the video but are considering is putting a wood burner in there as well to keep us warm during winter.

I think you have one of the prettiest properties on KZfaq. Your mother's future home is breathtaking, imo. That building is my fave, save the chapel,,. but the chapel is a bit too small even to make a tiny house. lol Simply beautiful. It's all so pretty. And, I'm a cat lover and you did Velvet just right. I can tell yall understand animals, well cats anyway. ha I brought two wild ones in about a year ago, they sleep in the mudroom to stay warm and safe as we have bears, mountain lions, fox, coyote, skunks, etc. LoL We have just about every predator here.

I’m no shop expert, but since you have a blank canvas for electrical, my first thought was outlets mounted to the work benches’ table edges and possibly a couple hanging from the ceiling. Also, may I suggest inserting stone into the waste channel in the floor to serve as a visual connector for the room? May also want to consider wood since you’ll be adding wood window frames, but maybe too delicate for a shop floor. Or use non-precious wood for now and add the nice wood for when transforming into living space.

There is a very real sense of peacefulness about the space with great energy. It will make a wonderful workshop and I believe produce everything you have planned for the next 5 to 10 years. It is good to have an initial layout idea because of the electrics but you will find the best use of the space as you begin to actually produce items. The windows will be great as will the refurbished doors. Just think of all the great projects that will be coming out of this workshop. Will you have a wood-burning stove to keep you toasty in the winter months?

yeah, workshops are forever in progress and we'll surely move things around 😊 bertus has had unheated workshops for the past nearly 20 years so we're not actually sure we'll need heating. It would be nice of course, but we doubt the space could be heated properly in the current state (single glazing, drafty doors even after repairs, a big hole in the ceiling where they used to move hay through from the hayloft, and no windows in the room above. we were talking about it last evening and we're likely going to do no heating the first year and then deliberate 😄

I love the potential in the new cleared space. It's a clear canvas. I would suggest you look beyond to the distant future. Where do you want your kitchen there. Already install water there now. And sink and sewer drains. It is now much cheaper than in 10 years. Is there a chimney for a central heating woodburner. And repoint the walls before you put everything in. This prevents that there is much less dust on, or in between the stones. You're doing a great job.

While we would love to do all those things and they make a lot of sense theoretically, the walls are going to remain as they are and we are not (at this point) installing sink and sewer drains here. The reason why we are moving the workshop into this space is so that we can start working on the plumbing/water pipes/drains for the whole property. Getting started with that is a higher priority right now. In the future we'll have to dig out the floor by about 45 cms to put in insulation and a ventilated floor and so any drains that we put in now might get damaged or be in the way later. Pointing the walls would be nice, but again, it would lead us to far astray from the things we want to get started on and we're not yet 100% decided how we want to finish the walls in the future. While the natural stone has lots of character, there is a lot to say for insulating the exterior walls with an insulating plaster. So for now, rather than making this space into the perfect workshop, it will have to do that we make this into our best workshop yet. Bertus has been working in unheated sheds for the last 20 years and in comparison the present situation is definitely an upgrade :-)

“Renovation Tetris” such an apt phrase. Our own project is nowhere near the scale of yours (or in such a picturesque location) but it’s definitely a case if “in order to do this we must do that, and in order to do that we must first do the other….” and so on! 😅 I hope this video helps you see that you should give yourselves a big ol’ pat on the back and be proud of your accomplishments (err, kitchen paint? Wow…!😮) but do make sure you take plenty of time to recuperate too! ❤

As always, a great video. Wouldn’t life have been so much simpler if the whole job took 20 minutes! So glad you did a video on the project from start to finish. You should both be commended for your tenacity of keeping going little by little. None of it was an easy task! It was all heavy work. The space looks amazing! What a great place to set the workshop in. Knowing just how cold it could get on the top of your hill I think a wood burner is an excellent investment. It’s never great when you need to work in a cold space, the job appears to drag on forever, you risk your health in getting ill which will then definitely delay the progress of the job. The heat of course will help with the drying time for any of your glue/ paint projects. Plus if you’re warm you’re more likely to complete the project sooner. Winner every time! Your video always has a sense of serenity to it, nothing is rushed. It is just steadily making progress, which is really all you want. To be moving forward is the name of the game. Now on to your next project, transferring every thing from the old workshop into its new home. ❤

First time on your channel. What a wonderful project. I have a large shop, not quite as large as yours. I have made it a point to put as many pieces of equipment on mobile bases as possible. Moving equipment when assembling large pieces is a godsend. If you're never planning to house animals in the area, I would concrete the poop trough in the floor. It looks like a broken or turned ankle waiting to happen. Finally, I'm going to assume you'll be doing some pointing in the future. I saw the mortar used on the floor repair. Lime based or concrete based? It seemed fairly creamy. If your mortar is smooth enough you may be able to use a mortar bag. It works just like a piping bag a cake decorator would use. I have used a small one on brick repointing and a larger one for stone work. Good luck. Stay extra safe doing wiring. And...Thank you for your time.

welcome to our channel! and thank you for your suggestions. we're definitely going to put wheels under a number of equipment (mobile dust collector, air compressor, extra table on wheels etc) but will have a look at taking it a step further 😊 we've been thinking about filling up the poop gutter but it's an odd shape and to make the floor level it would mean having to add a lot of concrete (that we will have to take out again later because when we want to turn this space into living space we need to lower the floor by 15cm plus more for insulation - we've talked about this in previous episodes but forgot to repeat it in this one). the mortar we used for the vault is lime based mortar and when we point the walls we are definitely going with lime! ❤️

@@storiesfromthecascina A friend, here in the states, had a slightly larger trough. He was able to box it over with old barn wood. He place a 3 inch line with tees underneath the box. There are a few trap doors that provide access to the tees in the 3 inch line. The tees, when not capped have shop vac hose adapters. And....Yes....The pipe under the floor is connected to his dust collector. When it works it's wonderful....When it is inconvenient he threatens to concrete over the entire thing!!! hehehehe. P.S. Recently, after using fluorescent tube lighting for years.....I convert them over to a high kelvin white LED tubes. The lighting is incredible. I should have done this a decade ago.

The barn looks so different with all the stuff out and in its blank canvas. I would put a sink and have running water and the barn looks so beautiful with the sunlight streaming in. I bet Bertus arms are still trilling from breaking all the concrete from those animal troughs. Having a sink in there would be very practical but it's a bit too much work for now that will slow us down too much with other jobs we want to tackle the coming months. We have a garden tap just outside the door so that will have to do for now!

Slow but sure, from what I've noticed in KZfaq renovations the first two years are the most critcal to that 'hang in there' element. As Churchill would say 'just keep buggering on' lol I have a wall where I write all these sayings I find... You are also doing all this in the most resourceful manner, which is best and wisest however also adds to the effort. You may not be able to see the changes however, week over week, we sure can! All said, you are so lucky, you have regular visits by family and friends to break it up a bit, your channel is quietly doing well, your neighbors seem lovely and, you have each other and, ate able to live in the project while working on it. So far, a tremendous success. Only thing is, we all need more breaks away from it all, from our routines....humans that we are....so good to build those in too! Bikes? 🤗🇨🇦 Maria

lots of character in that space. For those small window aperture, I would put in a frame first, with a lip around the outside edge then make a glass-holding frame held by simple wooden turn-toggles so that you can remove the framed glass easily for cleaning. it would also make it weather-tight easier.

we've been thinking about it a bit more and we're very likely going to go without a stove for one winter and see how it goes. we can always add one in later. we don't have one in the current workshop either. it's nicer when it's warm but it's more important for us right now to get on with other reno jobs. 😊

It looks so nice! As a cabinetmaker I would suggest to have a bandsaw and a chopsaw nearest to the door where the wood comes to the workshop. After cutting up the wood you will plane. Next step is tablesawing, the routing. Handtool work, sanding and then assemble. In short think about the process the wood will go throught and then place the different machines and workplaces on a line according to this fx along the walls. Make a separate area for sanding with sucktion and one for applying paint or finish that is as far away from dust as possible. Good luck :)

The new work shed looks amazing. You both have kept chipping at it, and now the task is complete. Further to the discussion of the wood heater, I would ~ (wood!) suggest to place it where you have positioned the router, sort of the centre of the room. White often here at home, the wood heater is on a plinth with a guard rail around it, and a gate for access. A handy bench nearby for that cosy coffee or hot chocolate ~ possibly a place for your rehabilitated wild kitty to rest on? The last leaves have dropped off my Lilac ~ I’m jealous about your huge plant! Regards from Susan at Hobart.

with the placement of a wood stove we'll also need to consider the easiest spot to have a chimney pipe. we're very likely going to go without a stove for one winter and see how it goes. we don't have one in the current workshop and bertus has had unheated workshops for the last 2 decades 😅 it's nice when it's warm but it's more important for us right now to get on with other reno jobs. 😊

Great video of the barn to the time being. What a lot of work, done meticulously and the vision of a workshop place is great. My suggestion would be to add a wood-burning stove for the winter and a sitting area for soup breaks. I guess the Italian rules won't let you change or add new windows. You might consider putting a metal bar or two across the windows if you feel the need to lock the building. I would twist my ankle in that trough time and time again!

Glad you enjoyed it! We will apply for permission to make the windows on the long wall larger, but that will be for the post-workshop phase of the space. And yes, we're still trying to come up with a solution for the gutter. No twisting ankles or tripping over it so far, but it's less than ideal for sure.

Are you also going to have a wood/supply storage area inside, easily accessible for projects? I would also suggest some form of sawdust collection system. It will be handy especially since you are planning a composting toilet system, even if it is just a simple bag collection which you attach to the various saws/sanders that you can them empty into bin to use later. (Can also be used to color/thicken glues/epoxy to match your wood projects).I concur with the work stations on wheels, it will make the space very adaptable for larger projects.

we've set up our main wood storage in the big warehouse behind the workshop (not connected but not too far away) but might keep some smaller/more vulnerable pieces of wood (trim, beading etc) in the workshop.

Congrats, what a beautiful space you have worked so hard. If those old walls could talk, I'm sure they would be able to tell a few stories. Making your own paint is a wonderful idea, in Australia when the first settlers came they used what was called a milk paint. Unfortunately some of the paint had lead in it, so caution is required when doing up old furniture & old houses. I use "Porters" paint which is based on a natural recipe of lime mixes, only made in Australia. It does last a long time & gives that old worldy appearance❤but vry expensive.

Goed werk (gewelvig plafond ook). De muur naar het woonhuis heeft, zo te zien, een grote houten latei waaronder je weer een doorgang kunt maken. Is dat nog een optie? Succes weer!

de oude doorgang onder de lange houten latei laten we dicht maar de kleinere deur ernaast die maken we weer open. de ruimte achter die muur is nu een garage maar wordt dan hal/trappenhuis.

we've been thinking about filling up the poop gutter but not sure how to best deal with it without adding more demo work onto our plate in the future. it's an odd shape (3-4 cm taller on one side than the other) and to make the floor level it would mean having to add a lot of concrete (that we will have to take out again later because when we want to turn this space into living space we need to lower the floor by 15cm plus more for insulation - we've talked about this in previous episodes but forgot to repeat it in this one). the lowering of the floor is required per italian construction regulation, and not something we can do much about.

@@storiesfromthecascinaperhaps a length of wood ? Cut to be level. It would at least stop tripping being an issue. You could mortar it down to stop wobbles. Don’t want to spend too much time on it if it’s going, but it also needs to last a while. 😊 love the channel.

@@storiesfromthecascina Do a grid of lumber, at least on the woodworking end, that can support a plywood floor. You will be able to use the material in the future for various things when you move on other renovations so any cost is transferred and you'll have a much easier time with you machines and work surfaces, especially if you want them mobile and want the things you build to remain flat as they must be. Think of it like a regular floor but with less robust joists...only what you need to get things level. This is a common way folks here in the US will convert a garage to a workshop when the floor is sloped as building codes often require for drainage of rain and snow that might be on vehicles.

Goed bezig, in je eigen tempo. In de nieuwe werkplaats is het vrij donker, zorg voor verlichting boven je werkplekken. Misschien is witkalken vloeken in de kerk, maar misschien helpt dat het donker wat te verdrijven.

Er komt sowieso verlichting, de donkere hoek wordt voor de metaalbewerking - smeden en lassen is juist makkelijker in een wat donkere ruimte, en alles hout komt langs de lichte kant van de kamer. Witkalken gaan we niet doen omdat we er nog niet helemaal uit zijn wat we later met de muren en plafonds willen doen qua afwerking. Er zijn weinig dingen zo naar als kalkverf van natuursteen verwijderen dus dat besparen we onszelf liever :-P Waarschijnlijk zetten we later een isolerende kalkkpleister op de buitenmuren, en dan maakt het helemaal niet uit als we nu witten. Maar tot we daar zeker van zijn doen we nog even nix :-)

Great work getting the room to this point. From start to this point how long did it take the both of you? Why set this up as a work shop since you already have one behind the house? Convenience? Or to consolidate? Awesome video as always! Thanks for sharing!

we estimate is was about 150 man hours spread out over about 6 weeks. we're moving the workshop into here because we need to vacate the current workshop to be able to start renovations. the current workshop is also the "technical room" for the boiler, electricity etc, and we need good access to those as we renew the plumbing and electrics in the house + we're going to add a downstairs bathroom in there as well. It's also a bit too small for our needs and the stable is a much bigger space.

We don't have heating in our current workshop and that went allright this past winter. We might put a woodstove in the new workshop though - not yet 100% decided.

Wat een klus! Hoe gaan jullie het doen als Bertus zijn paard (of een nieuw paard?) komt? Is er nog een stal? Wat ik niet begrijp is enerzijds de reden om zelf verf te gaan maken, terwijl de verfindustrie zulke mooie verf maakt en anderzijds waarom zo'n mooie braadpan daarvoor gebruikt is. Die pan is neem ik aan niet meer bruikbaar voor iets anders dan verfbereiding?

de pan is idd niet meer bruikbaar voor voedselbereiding, het emaille is beschadigd - er komt niet meteen een paard deze kant uit en wanneer dat toch zou gebeuren is er voldoende ruimte buiten de koeienstal om - je vraag over de verf beantwoorden we eigenlijk wel in de vorige aflevering: deze verf is super ecologisch + fijn om mee te werken + super duurzaam en makkelijk in onderhoud + gezond voor het hout + budgetvriendelijk, en daarnaast is het leuk om te doen. 😊

Leuk om te zien dat de ruimte klaar is voor gebruik. Ik denk dat de ramen dicht gemaakt waren tegen indringers,zoals katten en wasberen. Ik zou dan ook met ramen en ruiten zorgen dat niet naar binnen kunnen omdat ze behoorlijk kunnen vernielen. Zoveel mogelijk ruimte besteden aan opbergen lijkt me een must. Van pallets kun je goede schappen en kasten maken.

Yes absoluut. Nieuwe ruiten in de ramen is een van de volgende projecten :-) Niet handig als die open blijven, noch voor (on)gedierte, noch voor het naar binnen waaien van bladeren en stof.
