First the earth cooled, then the seas formed, and later humans appeared, and what did they do? Pretty much went straight to war with each other: first on land, then by sea, later below and eventually above the seas. Today, control of the seas remains vital whether in peacetime or during times of war, and unique aircraft, weapons, methods, and airmen are necessary to conduct this vital role.
On this episode, retired U.S. Navy Captain Sean “Leeds” Liedman joins us for an exhaustive discussion on the history, hardware, and humans involved in maritime patrol with special focus on the P-3 Orion and P-8 Poseidon. Due to the interview length, no announcements or generic listener questions are featured this week.

This was a really champion interview, Leeds is a natural speaker and his knowledge appealed to the history major in me no end. Plus, as I've been a MN myself for a decade and a half, I can confirm he represented "MN nice" almost to the letter of state statute. If I recall accurately, a Royal New Zealand Airforce P3 detected what was believed to be a US sub during a training exercise somewhere off the coast of Australia, which was neither confirmed nor denied, and I think rather incredulously surprised whoever was discovered. The new P8s will be much more capable.

Congratulations to “Leeds” for making the big time on Fighter Pilot podcast! We served together as instructors at VP-30 which is the Maritime Patrol training squadron. I can attest that he is a great guy, superb tactician & fantastic Naval Officer. BZ!!!

As a very old radioman in P2V Neptunes I feel like a dinosaur. I served in VP6 out of Barbers Point and had over 2000 hrs. It was an exciting time for a young kid. I went on to get my pilots license and became a controller with the FAA and still fly my own plane, a Vans RV6. Thanks for the update on the mission. Keep up the great work. Go Navy!

I also thought I wanted to be an A-6 BN, but they took away the option by the time I got through VT-10. I ended up in the EP-3E (VQ-1 & 2) and had a fulfilling career. Great podcast Jell-O!

Great episode! I was a P3 Flight Engineer from 83 to 2003, flying OnSta at 200 feet and tracking Russian Subs during the Cold War was a thrill, enjoyed every minute of it!

Maritime patrol is often overlooked I’m glad for this episode I will miss the P-3 but the P-8 is a game changer just in time as the Communist Chines blue water expansion needs to be met with extensive options not from just us but our Allie’s.

A forgotten community in naval aviation. It may not be fast and sexy but it’s a vital role in ensuring the safety of sea lines of communication

I absolutely love the conversation about what you get selected to fly. I'm giving it my all to become a pilot in the navy, and for a long time up till I listened to this, I would ask myself "what If I don't get the airframe I want? What if they put me in rotary?" But your conversation cleared that up, if I don't get to fly what I want, I might be bummed out for a bit, but I still think I'll have an experience like no other.

GPS buoys, soft wings, smooth quiet tride, what the heck! I suppose that next you'll tell us that there's no TACNAV, plotstab or High Speed Printer. Heresy Leeds! Seriously though, very well done gents. Final question - On the P-8, can you aim a bomb using the nut on the windshield wiper technique from the P-3, or does the HUD get in the way. Hah!

+1 on being an NFO. -2 for being a boat schooler. Loved the VP community as it’s run by NFOs. We all know Barbers Point was the place to be. I was at the TSC Sig during that time. Those were heady days.

Dang ..60 yrs of service for the P-3. Growing up near KNUQ, they were [seemingly] in the pattern 24/7. Lived very close to the golf course just south of the field. Great platform. Held or still holds speed record for multi engine. Taxpayers got their money's worth. VP-31 👍 FLY NAVY!!!
