A class that will be ready for anything the Galaxy throws at it. We can wipe the smug looks off the Klingons, Romulans, Gorn, and Tholians.” Starfleet Admiralty: “Well that’s impressive, it certainly seems stronger than the Constitution. However this ship is more geared to being a Battleship, not an explorer. What we need is something that while yes can handle itself better in emergencies than the Constitution class, it must also be an able Explorer: faster, more powerful, more efficient, better shields, excellent scientific facilities.” Fleet Yards: “Admirals, Federation council allow us to present, the Atlas. I think you’ll find it’ll meet your needs. A new explorer, more powerful yet more efficient than the Constitution and Federation classes. Command: “Okay looks good, let’s order 12 of them.” Command: “What the hell is wrong with this ship, the phasers deplete faster than the Constitution and Federation classes. The shields are much weaker, the power output is too strong for this thing to handle. To make things worse, the Altas was nearly destroyed due to the warp core and its inability to maintain speeds higher than warp 9. Explain yourselves!” Fleetyards: “Um well sir, it’s like you said the core is just too damned strong for the atlas to handle. We designed the phasers to be channeled through the main engines. They should have been able to recharge as quickly or better than the Constitution and Federation. We’ll go back and try again.” Admiralty: “Oh you’ll do better than that, you’ll build no more of those death traps. You’ll quickly downgrade the existing ships and work to create something better, that TRUELY is better. What about the Miranda class? Why not use some of the advancements of that to make a Constitution refit?” SF Naval Yards: “We can do that, the Enterprise is due back from her five year mission before too long.” Bottom line, when you overthink your designs they become overblown and over complicated. As Scotty would say, “The more they Overthink the plumbing the easier it is the stop up the drain.”

While it is mostly headcanon and fanfiction, I appreciate that you don't just go "oh yeah starfleet built this ship and it was the bestest". Not every ship design works out and that can add depth to the universe. It reminds me of how some mechs in Battletech exist to show players how *not* to build a mech, such as the Charger, or to fill out a roster rather than actually be effective, such as the Hoplite. Not everything in a universe has to be amazing, and can be notable and beloved for being bad, a poor fit, or a concept that just doesn't work in practice. And that's entirely okay.

It seems that the ship was just ahead of its time. It’s features seem to be a cross between the Excelsior and the Sovereign. Great video as always 🖖

Imagine if one of these ships got to the point of having its space frame built at Yard 39 right before the systems Sun decided to become a bit testy. What advancements and fixes could a 25th century Starfleet Corp of Engineers impart to this unlucky Duck...

Also, if we combine different bits of head canon from other trek games as well, it could be said that when the Federation class and Atlas classes failed, it paved the way for another federation design to fill the battleship role. The Proxima class from Star Trek Legacy. Third time’s the charm, eh?

A very interesting narrative for this ship; certainly echos issues that real world military hardware encounter, especially when money and government contracts are involved, with the final product being lackluster at best and downright broken at worst.

I was recently wondering why Starfleet never built ships with multiple warp cores. I hadn't considered that too much power would be an issue.

Atlas is a beautiful design that should be "revamped" and used in future stories . Has Starfleet ever tried a larger Miranda class ship ? I envision a Miranda but with a Stargazer style thicker saucer section with a rectangular frame replacing the silly roll bar . A Miranda could carry up to four small Defiant style attack ships attached to that frame and be a self contained task force ! In case you haven't noticed I'm a huge fan of the Miranda !

The Atlas Class Prototype Dreadnought is still my favorite beta canon TOS ship design, but then again I will always put the TOS and TMP era aesthetic styles at the top of my list of Star Trek design styles.

I love this class... mostly because it is an adaptation of the MAGNIFICIENT Concorde class (my favorite STO ship)... I d'on't remember you doing a video on it... if you ever get to it, I'll be SO VERY happy to watch it (even if I watch all your videos anyways ;-) )

Outstanding narrative. This happened in history as well. Designs were put into production straight off the drawing board only to fail. The Germans built an entire production run of the ME 210 only to find out it was areodynamicly unstable and worthless as a fighter plane.

I love my Atlas in STO.

I didn't like TOS ships design. Until I see Atlas. I love it, it is gorgeous and beautiful. I got it in STO, and I do not agree with your story (your data banks have too be contamineted by Romulan virus or something!). My Atlas works perfectly... ok, ok after lunch my crew need one year too polish it, but now...works great (but secondary warp core can't work on more then 5,6% of it's nominal power), no problem with warp speeds (up to Warp 11,36), over all 109,3% better then Constitution!

The atlas is slick, but i'd have rather had a updated federation class in STO.. nice video. I like beta/head canon on here, its good.. aligns with some of my own head canon.. also read the book "Dreadnought!" its like 300 pages ish and its worth the read.

As soon as I saw this ship in ST:O I knew I needed it! Even though I like the Federation class dreadnought for pure nostalgia, it is admittedly pretty ugly. The Atlas is just way more aesthetically pleasing in every way

Handy class if you want to find somewhere......

This parallels the story of the USS Tritium project, as told in the 1979 "Star Trek - Space Flight Chronology" book. The Tritium class was intended to supercede the Horizon & Daedalus classes, during the latter half of the 22nd century. However, the theorised high warp speeds that the coaxial tri-nacelle generated warp field, was expected to deliver, didn't occur. Instead, massive warp field eddies were created and the USS Tritium only managed a top velocity of Warp Factor 3 (27c).

Sometimes the ideas in the minds of designers surpass the ability of available technology to make it happen. I believe this combined with politics doomed the Atlas class to its eventual fate. Just imagine what a powerful ship this could've been given the time to get it right.

The ship itself looks pretty awesome. However with almost every new system based on the duel warp core and failing, it's an unfortunate situation. Well as they say in life, you win some you lose some. Great narrative though.

I liked the Atlas class the moment I saw it. It looked like so much more of a warship than the Constitution or Miranda or the later Constellation and Excelsior, and yet somehow it ended up being classed as a "Dreadnought-Carrier" which is weird. At least in STO if equipped well it can hold it's own, it's a tough ship that can take a beating and deliver it even if for some reason it's 'fighter' complement is out of action.

You aught to look unto the Ticonderoga and its Refit as seen in the Star Trek Legacy video game. Legacy was the first game that all 5 captains ( at time of production in the mid 2000s) were voiced by their actors.

Great video, and it makes sense in the timeline. However, you could have put a little positive spin on it for one. If you look at the designs it seems the step between Constitution III [enterprise TMP] and the Excelsior class and some of the designs do carry over like the thickened neck and secondary hull. But, bigger isn't always better. Take the Scott Class Cruisers from STO, they look familiar to this design. Perhaps if given proper technical help they'd have been a supplement to the Constitution Class as a CNC ship for fleet actions, or exploring space. In a somewhat historical sense the Constitution Class [Iowa Class] while the Atlas Class could've worked as like the Montana class was supposed to, but was never built.

I love my sto Atlas Dreadnought. Is it the most powerful ship in the game? No, but it is no slouch, that's for sure. It is by far my favorite ship in my roster, though. The design aesthetic is the epitome of Trek, in my humble opinion. And it fits in nicely with my current Captain's Log game that I've set in the Four Year's War.

The story certainly fits the greater narrative of your other Truth and Myth videos and works to why the class might not be common. Still, I do enjoy the TOS style design of the Atlas and it is a shame how meta the console it comes with is in STO because another TOS-era alt or two would not mind also having one to wander around in.

I saw a photo of this ship, from Star Trek online. They had christened it the USS Uhura, NCC 1932, as a tribute to Nichelle Nichols on the day she died. Are you saying that STO chose a defunct class for the USS Uhura? YIKES!

Hmm! Technically speaking. This would make it a Heavy Battlecruiser. One step below the Dreadnought class! Serving as a science vessel as well as a fighting vessel.

Too bad STO can't use other existing designs like the Proxima or Ark Royal class

Warp factor 10 would have seriously stressed the shields and bulkheads, so giving this ship warp factor 12 would’ve scattered the remains of the ship across several light years. Even Scotty would never had signed for on this upgrade.

Still prefer the proxima class as the experimental TOS dreadnought. However the atlas is still one of my favorite ships in star trek online.

After flying the Atlas in STO, this video does the class such a dishonor as ingame it's easyally one of the top 20 ships ingame, top 10 for tank ships.

Although the Atlas Class failed. It remained in the data banks for years. Until The technology caught up and improved. Finding the designs one day a starship designer was inspired by them and they designed the Chimera Class.

Seems to me that's a design they could have fixed. (Like, just throttling back the secondary warp power core seems like it ought to have worked, if they couldn't have just beefed up those other power systems. )

so the big problem is fixable by replacing the two warp drives with one standard config, maybe a wee bit bigger the constitution. i like the design, a short refit meh away from awesome

Sounds like the Atlas class was Starfleet's beginnings into multiple redundancies in it's ship design. As far as it's "failures", sounds like a forbearer of the DS9's Defiant class. Over-powered to the point of it wanting to tear itself apart, but still having teeth.

So the great experiment before the great experiment. Almost back to back botches.
