I hate to be the dick that points out the fact that they did paid you $1,500.00 to do the vid. Receiving a $1,500.00 sub & box set up to make a vid is a form of payment. So you shouldn't be saying that you wasn't paid to do the vid, since you most certainly was paid to do the vid. $1,500.00 in fact. Pretty good pay for a vid thats less than 13min. I'm in no way or by any means hating on you for being paid for the vid. Even if it was reviewd and edited by them. Who cares? You showed the #'s it produced and you should be compensated for your time and audience. You put in the work to make your channel and to grow it like a garden with great content that we obviously love or we wouldnt be watching it. Lol. But, real big but here, I dislike your misleading your viewers by saying that you wasn't paid for this vid. That is my only problem with the vid. If you would have stated that the sub& box was your only payment I would have been thrilled. But when you mislead people about something so small & insignificant then you cause people to doubt other things you have said & published. We love your content cause we trust in you, but when you so obviously mislead us it causes doubts and doubts can ruin a channel thats based on trust and truth. I'm sure you can understand that. Id hate to lose my trust in my fave audio tester over something so small as a sponsored vid.

150db from a prefab enclosure...the car audio industry has come such a long way in the past 20 years. I'm old enough to remember guys thinking they were the king ding-a-ling because they hit 150db in the spl lanes lol. Thanks for the review Big D!

I had kicker back in the high school days 2003 ish. Was never really happy with it but back then I was a sucker for advertised watts. Last year after watching a LOT of your videos and exo's videos I have an amazing bass wagon that shakes my street, 2x pioneer dvc subs powered by a 1ohm stable kenwood amp. For the last 10 years I had clean bass that was just for good listening but then one weekend I decided to shoot for overkill bass... No regrets lol

I hit 150 db with 2 l7 12s in a small sealed box years ago. These subs are awesome and I still have the trophy to prove it🤘

Thats very good, but i competed back in the day, and the old meters read 5 to 10Db higher than the new meters. So a 150Db back in the day would be anywhere from a 140Db to a 145Db on the new pressure sensors. Im not being a hater, just pointing out the facts, i mean how would anyone know the difference in meters unless they tested like i have. Worst Db difference i heard of from a friend was, when he went to his first show, he scored a 145Db, 2-12s sealed, off of a rockford power 1500, audio control meter in the same position, and same freq. Used, for all scores. Then 2 weeks later, or so, @ a show, he scored a 155Db, again same type of meter= audio control, same freq., same system. Then he went to a show with the same system, meter in the same position, same freq., but this time on the new pressure sensor= The Term Lab Meter= only a 140Db! Later i found out, the show where he scored a "155Db" they boosted the audio controls calibration gain +10Db, it wasnt sanctioned, so they did it for fun. But even that old meter when calibrated was off 5 to 7Db on average vs the Term Lab Meter ( plus you can not change/inflate Db scores with this new meter). Still impressive though.

Hey Big D I have personally heard this box mounted in the trunk of a crown Vic and it is no joke the loudest prefab box I have ever heard my life and I've been in car audio for 35 years. Unless a person is going for SPL this may very well be too much base. I perforated my eardrum back in 1988 then when I installed four 12s in my Ford Bronco ||. I learned a hard lesson back then and that was not to overtax the physical limitations of my body so I will not be buying one of these boxes but for your fans that still feel they are bulletproof GO FOR IT!!!!!

@@wal you'll be glad you did. I just finished the sub box in my S10 about 3 days ago and I love it, 2 x 10" and 1 12". The tens are in their own . 85 cu/ft sealed enclosures and the 12 is ported so I got the punch and the residence that I was hoping for. This was my first attempt with fiberglass after 35 years of building boxes and systems for other people.

What is so amazing about this is this. In the mid/early 1990’s Alma Gates and her Ford Bronco had the world record at 153.7 db if I remember right. Fast forward 25 or so years and you can come extremely close to that for only $1500. That is amazing!

From my memory, which is not as good as what it used to be. I remember Alma and “The Beast” on the cover of Car Audio and Electronics way back in ‘95 or ‘96. I’ve slept a time or two since then.

@@wal Yes i have tested on all of the old, and new meters. The old meters even when perfectly calibrated were 5 to 7Db higher than the Term Lab Pressure Sensor. The most extreme diff. Was 15Db diff. From a Term Lab Meter= a 140Db, vs an Audio Control, that someone had turned up to a +10Db on the calibration adjustment= a 155Db on that meter= which was reading + 5Db higher, even when calibrated, so +5Db, + the 10Db boost= a score +15Db higher, same system, same metering position, and same freq.!

This could possibly be the best all-in-one box I've seen so far for just straight up music output. $1500 for a full quad speaker setup with good tuning and such an easy installation makes this thing great, I might even consider getting one myself but I'll need to measure out the trunk space of my Mercedes first.

It’s a Bluetooth SPL meter and an app. Very accurate. SSA APM2 wireless SPL meter, look it up 👍

Provided the recommended tuning and air space lines up but there's a very good chance it doesn't.

I had two L7s in a sealed box facing each other for a port thru the rear seat armrest in my sedan. Two kicker 8" in rear deck for midbass and 4 ss series 6.5s for mids and highs. Best sounding system I've ever heard crystal clear and LOUD all the way up the spectrum. Car was sound proofed , and had 1 kicker ZX1500.1 for the subs 1 kicker sx 900.4 for the 6.5s and a kicker sx 600.2 for the 8s. Three deep cycle dry cells with a 20 farad cap in the back and a yellow top under the hood, 0 guage all the way around everything grounded to chassis individually...damn I miss that system. I rattled pictures on walls from 3 blocks away lol. Got a few tickets. L7s are one of the best subs IMO. Great vid man thanks 😊

Few years back I had a L5-15 in a one note wonder box in a hatchback and pulled a 142 with a measly 400 watts...on the dash. I miss that sub (and to some point the car - which got totalled in an accident). Still have the Amp I used in my 09 f150 pushing 4 JL 10" subs in a custom box under the rear seat.

Different vehicles, power, freq., maybe even diff. Meter, and location,= way too many variables to compare SPL.

I got two DS18 12 exl carbon caps getting 5k rms from an orion hcca amp in a 4c ft box. But if I didn't have that I'd go for this setup

That is a loud box. Another prefab box i was impressed by was the Digital Designs DD LE-M12.There was a finnish guy that played 148dB on 3kw with that box :-) Quite impressive for 1 12inch sub :-)

@@casemods Not even a fair comparison, the car was joni k i believe, and its a tiny hatchback setup for SPL. These little hatches are really loud. Smaller area= way easier to get loud! Why do you think honda crxs are used for spl comps= Loud! You can put a 8 inch in a tube enclosure, with an aero port, with 1,000 watts, and bust a 150Db, @ 62Hz. Put the same set up in big ds large suv, and its about 10Db less!

I think when the subs break in they will hit a few dB higher. That’s a pretty cool setup from kicker and the price isn’t that bad either. Good vid big d.

Had a dual 12" ported kicker box in my chevy cavalier in the 90's during high school. Really hit those lows nicely!

Ah man... memories right there... that's sum old school OG bass bump! Ill never forget hanging out at the car wash on Main St. one Saturday night many many years ago and seeing Nemesis and Rockford team up to destroy the first set of florescent lights busted by bass I ever saw. There was about 10 vehicles present and we nearly all went to jail cuz nobody would own up to the damage after 5 O rolled up on us. A few of us decided to chip in and cover the damages as kind of a sacrifice to the bass gods (and to cool the boots of the badged cowboy who was threatening arrest) since it was just pretty dahum cool! I can't say it was Munchies for sure that did it, but I can't say it wasn't either, it was probably our favorite tune from the album but it has sum other killers too. Good call, I'll have to 2nd the song recco! And thanks for the flashback, one for the grandkids one day!😂

I know nothing about SPL setups but when I asked the local installer about the hardest hitting single sub he has heard he told me about a guy with a single L7 in the back of a camero hitting 150.

Tru dat there was definitely some energy wasted flexing that hatch door instead of moving air. A few more inches of clearance would have let the port disburse air a bit more evenly and not concentrate it directly into one spot

Agreed. I'd bet he would gain close to a dB pulling that box forward a bit. Crowding a port like that rarely works well. Granted he is metering at the kick but with some testing and optimization he could probably put up the same numbers sealed at the dash.

@@mush0847 I have some theories, but no, not for sure. I have tested that sort of arrangement and never seen it gain, stood up like that with subs firing back might gain over subs firing forward but subs up and port to back, side, or corner are normally best in SUV. I've also never had any luck with port firing up with very tall boxes, though I've done OK with shorter boxes with subs back port up or subs and port up. The whole issue of building up a big standing wave in a car for true SPL competition is for practical purposes too many variables to predict or model though and often stuff that makes no sense will gain and things that should help lose. Derek did right with his "let's try this and test" attitude. There's a huge thread on SMD forum entitled "spl gains" made by some dude in South America where he tried all sorts of things and made notes of gains and losses. It is an interesting read.

Great vid! Old school me is like...ports?!? On a Kicker box?!? 😂 You seem to have a great relationship with Kicker, Big D. It would be a different kind of video, but it would be interesting to go through the history of Kicker, the Impact* split, and showcase the original products, building to their current offerings? Kicker’s early 6.5” with 8” passive radiator truck box is what got me into car stereo to begin with! *I loved my Impact subs! Yes, I was the one loyal customer. 😄

You're not really missing anything, this setup isn't really that great for SPL. It shouldn't take 7,000w and 4x12" subs to just barely touch 150 dB. That said, the power needed to increase SPL is exponential. You have to keep doubling the power to get relatively small gains in dB and this becomes very apparentt at higher power levels.

A fighter jet does 150 db(A) in your car it´s 150 db(spl). Thats a big difference, db(a) is much louder !!

Spl are measured in db. Look it up on Google. No difference. You are measuring spl. The measurement is in db.

SPL is measured in dB, no differece. Weighting scales, dB(a) dB(b) dB(c), come in to play for filtering frequencies based on how the human ear perceives sound pressure. We are much more sensitive to sound in the 1-4kHz range and the a weighted scale mimics that.

I don’t understand it takes minimal knowledge to slap a plywood box together and put 6 zvx 12s on it with a taramp 6k and it’ll hit harder guaranteed than these shit kickers. No one wants 50 hz bass for 3 grand...........

@@briankt69 That was kind of incoherent... I'm also not sure you know how much building materials cost. Maybe 100 bucks total here (using better quality birch ply and a double baffle and vinyl wrap). You are paying for the convenience of having a good quality prefab box built and delivered and not for the quality of the components. It's like the Domino's Pizza of sub boxes.

@@hispls Never metered. But its common knowledge that you don't need a $1500 box with mediocre subs to hit 150. I'm sure the system that's in my picture or the one thats in the video on my channel hit 150s.

@@Se7enMiIe It's even more common knowledge that every internet shit talker who runs off about how easy 150 is has never been near an SPL meter. Go to a show, get a number posted by a competition org, and get back to us on this topic when you have a little more experience.
