It surprises me that El Paso isn't more celebrated in Texas. Aesthetically, El Paso feels more Texas than the Triangle cities of the East.

Watching this video makes we want to hop into a car and drive to El Paso. What a beautiful city! I find the roads in that city fascinating, I-10 included. It's cool to see those colored jersey barriers in the median and on bridges. I also enjoyed the Doobie Brothers soundtrack. Thanks, Jim!

Watching this video right now makes the cityscape between Downtown El Paso and Sunland Park Drive look archaic compared to how it looks in the present. I visit El Paso, TX twice a month & can attest to the fact that Interstate 10 between the aforementioned sections is immaculate & it has been substantially upgraded to include more main lanes, the addition of architectural enhancements, and for a short distance, runs parallel to the newly constructed section of the Border Expressway that loops the city. There’s even a new indoor skydiving and top golf entertainment complex that’s visible from the freeway now. The complex also features color change-neon lighting that makes traveling this section of freeway at night a magnificent driving experience. The current aesthetic is modern and is as beautiful as it is fun to drive. I’ve been to Houston & Dallas within the last two weeks and Although I-10 through El Paso is not as expansive as the Katy Freeway in Houston or The new LBJ Expressway in Dallas, one thing is for sure, anyone experiencing the freeway will now know for damn sure that they’re in Texas.

As a Metroplex resident, it's mind boggling to think of how this is still Texas. I've been many places, but I've never been to one of the biggest cities in my home state, and most people I know would probably say the same about El Paso. After all, it's about the same distance here from my house as to St. Louis or Mobile, lol. Enjoyed this video, and this series in general! Definitely a very unique metro.

In the early years of my trucking career I learned very quickly to avoid El Paso during the day time! The best time to drive through there is between 2 and 5am. Although I am retired now, after 38 years in the trucking business, El Paso STILL boggles my mind about one aspect: from my hometown of Houston to El Paso is 750 miles...and, you're only 'HALF' way to Los Angeles, and, still in Texas! Geez! Great video as always! Travel safe, stay happy, and, have a blessed day! (6/19/2018 Tuesday 8:32pmCST Houston, Texas)

After El Paso, the drive to Dallas and San Antonio is just a nightmare. Most people that go to Dallas or San Antonio usually take more than a day to stop at places like Odessa, Abilene, Van Horn, and Fort Stockton. If someone can make a journey of over 500 miles in one day, that would be insane.

Right around the time this video was uploaded, I had just passed into town on a cross country trip from Southwest Florida to Washington State. I hit a nail on the road, my tire exploded, and I ended up staying the day while I waited for replacements to get installed. Great music and highway! The eastern I-10 / Loop 375 interchange is interesting because it is both a 4-level stack and a full cloverleaf, perhaps the only one of its kind. The cloverleaf is only used for the frontage road movements. Originally all turning traffic had to use to the cloverleaf, they built the flyovers during the past couple of years.

This is such a cool video! I love your stuff, Freeway Jim. To comment on your comment at 1:00 regarding the size of Texas: I did some homework and it turns out that it is a shorter distance to the western terminus of I-10 in Santa Monica, CA from the TX/NM line (798 mi.) than it is to the TX/LA line in Orange, TX (879 mi.). (I've never been further west than Exit 256 in Fort Stockton.) It also makes this stretch of I-10 the longest stretch of interstate within one state in the country. (Hence the expression, "The sun is rose, the sun is set, and we ain't out of Texas yet!") I also really dig the Doobie Brothers soundtrack! Merry Christmas, 2022!

What a great video. I've always enjoyed the El Paso area. Interestingly, in spite of stereotypes, El Paso is the only large Texas city located in a desert environment. While El Paso averages less than 10 inches of precipitation each year, some of which is snow, Houston in the eastern part of the state has a very wet, often tropical climate and is plagued with frequent flooding.

After watching this (twice!), I know I'll be searching thru old boxes of VHS tapes tonight, Jim. Long story, but in the early days of my OTR duties, I carried an old RCA "Prowonder" camera on just one trip... That camera was way too big to be on the truck. so i just saw this video ... and i'm just trying to put into my mind ... what it would be like to just do that long haul across the state. As i look at the list of other KZfaq videos on the right side of the screen i see one from Barbiepoledancer ( My three favorite road warriors are: You, Kyle and Barbie)...she recorded the long haul in one swoop (east bound)... i'm not sure though i want to sit in front of the screen for more than an hour watching 879 miles go by so fast... her time lapse clocks in at 1hr 10 minutes. According to her stats it took just under 14hrs to drive it all. i'm done at 10hrs of driving in one day ... 1 more mile after that would feel like 100 more... i think in chunks is better... so thank you for posting ... would love to meet the three of you some day.

The section of I-10 west of El Paso to the NM state line dearly needs to be SIX lanes. It is six lanes from jct I-25 in Las Cruces to the Tx/NM line. Another 2 tidbits, from this point, Beaumont, CALIFORNIA is much closer than Beaumont, Texas. Also, from this point you are about 100 miles closer to San Diego (via I-8 at split in Casa Grande, Az) than you are to Houston.

Do you ever think you'll drive through I-10 in New Orleans or Baton Rouge?
@Freewayjim7 жыл бұрын
I have several times, and there are some video of those places on this channel.

The city's name refers to a pass in the mountain range. Is this pass at the New Mexico state line where the video seems to start at mile 1 of I-10 in Texas?

I don't know
@SilentHonor20124 ай бұрын
The name, originally El Paso del Norte, means "the pass of the north" or "the northern ford". This was the spot where the Camino Real wagon trail, coming north toward New Mexico, crossed the Rio Grande and passed through the narrow gap between the Sierra de Juarez range on the south and the Franklin Mountains on the north.

I did this drive in March 2016. You're right, my phone got multiple messages saying "Welcome to Mexico...." explaining that now the rates have changed etc. El Paso is a neat city, I'd like to hang out there for a day or two and really check it out. Also, yes, once you're east of El Paso, it's 500 miles of absolutely nothing.

Very interesting color scheme on the freeway over passes. CSA is Defintely a more important factor but so is density. Look at Phoenix . 1.6 million people which is roughly the same population as Philadelphia yet because Phoenix is over 500 square miles, it's no where near as dense as Philly.

3:08 Spot On about populations of various cities. I live in Houston and so many locals like to boast how "big" Houston is and it being the 4th largest in the US. However when you factor in the MSA it ranks 5th behind the DFW metro @ #4 or using the CSA figures, it barely ranks in the top 10 at #9 with DFW coming in at #7. There is a rumor that Houston has snagged the #3 spot edging out Chi-Town, I have my doubts as the city boosters would be screaming this from the mountain top had it happened. Even so, it means little, the main metro areas in the NE/West Coast will always dominate. Frankly, I hope Houston stays the size that it is, as crazy as it is, it's still manageable.
@Freewayjim7 жыл бұрын
I hear ya, look at El Paso, it's technically a bigger "City" population than Atlanta but Atlanta has a metro of 6+ Million (and growing) so it's a highly flawed metric.
@cameraman6557 жыл бұрын
Yep, technically San Antonio is #2 in Texas, but is dwarfed by Dallas and Houston MSA/CSA numbers. Ditto for San Diego, while #2, LA and SF Bay obliterate in terms of the aforementioned metrics. Interesting factoid, for a brief period, Texas was the only state in the union with 3 cities over 1 million (cities, not metros), though when San Jose went over a million a few years back, California joined the club. With Austin flirting at a million (last count somewhere in the 930k figures), I suspect that Texas will be the only state with 4 cities at 1m+. Not certain how I feel about this......

There are some strange anomalies, for sure. There's that outdated statistic of only 10 US cities having more than 1 million. It sounds nuts, but it's technically true, if you only measure historical city limits, which in the modern world makes no sense. There are actually 54 CSA's with 1 million+, of which the El Paso area is the 54th.

To put it in perspective, in terms of area, Texas is about twice as big as Germany (268,581 square miles vs 137,903 square miles).

Wow, cool Video. .Perfect day. . .Doobies cranked up and fun ride! A couple of thing though: 1. @ 2:40 HUGE American flag at half staff ( any idea why, IOW who passed away), and 2. Any idea what those white things are at 6:45 (two sets, each side of the Interstate, about 10 or seconds apart.)?

Thanks, #1, I have no idea but I'll guess that it was for the terrorist shooting in the Orlando, FL nightclub the night before, #2 I think those are decorations for the bridge, I assume that is a busy thoroughfare that I-10 crosses at that point.

Can you ever do a tutorial on how you make your videos? Freeway Jim

That would be very time consuming and not many people use the software I use so it wouldn't matter that much. However, in the FreewayJim facebook group we have a guide to making videos in the docs section that has some tutorials within it.

3:00 Dang! El Paso's metro area is very small compared to a lot of cities. 681K people for it's city population is a lot, but the city does look more rural than other cities in America. That's why you should rely on metro populations not city populations.
@Freewayjim7 жыл бұрын
Uh yeah that was pretty much my point in the video.

Its not that its a small city because it isn't... its that there are NO suburbs. where as cities like houston have 15-20 suburbs el paso prob has like 3
