DAY 5-6 (January 21-22, 2020)
We haven't enjoyed our apartment in Tarifa for too long. We came to him late in the evening and left the next day in the morning, sailing to Tangier. It is only about 32 kilometers by sea. We had a cruise of about 45 minutes, and return tickets for one person cost us 80 euros. After boarding, we had our passport checked and a stamped stamp.
After disembarking in Morocco, the beaters immediately attacked us. When one of them discovered that another tourist spoke French, he followed him for half a kilometer. Others offered us a free tour of the city, not wanting to detach ourselves. At the very beginning it felt very strange. Everyone seemed to be watching us. Additionally, the district where we had the hostel (Medina Hostel) - Kasbah, is a place with a lot of narrow streets. Sometimes it's scary to go like that, but Tangier is said to be safe. We took a little slack and started exploring the area.
We passed many mosques. The Grande Mosquée (great mosque) was located in the immediate vicinity of our hostel. Then we headed towards Borj Dar el-Baroud - fortifications with cannons and turrets from the old citadel. Since Morocco was a French colony until 1956, this language is also used in tourism. Thanks to this, we were able to read street names without any problems. Mostly young men can be found on the streets of Tangier. One of them allegedly offered us a free tour and would not leave. He said that he comes from this district, knows everything about it and wants to share his knowledge. It was hard to get rid of. Whether we like it or not, we walked with the Tangier behind us through the Place de la Kasbah square, next to the Musée de la Kasbah museum and the Kasbah Mosque.
After leaving the Kasbah district, we went to less claustrophobic areas (without narrow streets). From the outside, we admired the Palais des Institutions Italiennes (Palace of Italian Institutions) and a certain abandoned building, which appears on Google Maps under the slogan "Necrópolis romana" (Roman necropolis). In fact, we wanted to find the "Tombeaux Phéniciens" (Phoenician tombs), but without access to the Internet, we could not locate it. It turned out that the desired location was only half a kilometer away. It is worth knowing about it.
Returning slowly towards the hostel, we accidentally passed through an old, neglected Christian cemetery (Cimetière chrétien), in the vicinity of which is the Anglican Church of St. Andrew's Church (St. Andrew's Church) and Masjid Sidi Bou Abid Mosque. Right behind it, we saw Grand Socco, a large shopping square, which also functions as a bazaar in the nearby streets. The prices for the fridge magnets are fixed there, but for example, we bought a women's handbag for 40% of the initial price. It started to get dark so we made it at the perfect time. The next day at 5 am we were awakened by a call to prayer from a nearby mosque.
We started the morning with admiring the city on the terrace of the hostel, which we went to while waiting for breakfast. We prepared a pancake, bun, butter, jam and very sweet tea. There was also coffee to choose from. Our hostel is located near the port, so we didn't need much time to get there for the return ferry.
Apart from the aforementioned Roman necropolises, we also did not manage to visit the Cap Spartel with its characteristic lighthouse and the caves of Hercules. Anyway, additional transport would have to be arranged, as this area is quite distant from the city center.
After returning to Tarifa, we still had a little day left. Just in time to drive 100 kilometers and visit the oldest Spanish city - Cadiz. This is what the next episode will be about and now I invite you to watch it.
