I recently took the plunge and invested in Bitwig Studio. Although I believe it's the best state of the art DAW for electronic music/EDM production, there are several aspects that really annoy me. In this video I have noted down my concerns and broken them down into chapters. My intention is that either my viewers can prove me wrong / they can show me some workarounds / or Bitwig can work on these points.
Do you agree/disagree on these points? Is there something that did not grab my attention yet and is missing in this list?
0:00 Intro
00:59 The Time Stretch-UI in Bitwig is not as sophisticated as in Ableton Live
04:36 Time Stretch in Ableton Live IMHO is the reference
06:27 Plugin overview in Bitwig - too overloaded
07:33 Plugin overview in Ableton Live - straight, simple, clutter free
08:49 Arranger & Mixer overview in Bitwig - not better, not worse than Ableton Live
11:49 Arranger & Mixer overview in Apple Logic - my personal reference
12:00 no advanced Audio editing in Bitwig
13:46 Working Folder & File Management. Please just save everything.
16:55 The Bitwig Button, File Menu & Task Bar. Why.
18:23 Is there a Toggle-button in Bitwig?
21:04 Why does Bitwig hide enabled Mute buttons?
21:57 Quantization, Quantization..., Quantize Audio...
23:16 Is it possible to replicate a Track without its clips? Like in Logic?
24:01 Just record one Bar less, Bitwig.
24:50 The Pitch shift's UI and other inaccessible elements.
26:20 Can I get back the legacy Bitwig's clip corners?

It's unbelievable the number of hostile comments on this video. Marc freely admits that he is still getting used to Bitwig, and the video is him highlighting pain points that he has come across. While it is true that some of the things exist but are different, and it is clear Marc is still on his journey, there are indeed frustrating missing features and annoyances. People rushing in with ad-hominem attacks first and saying he needs to RTFM or go use another DAW are extremely discouraging to see. As I said, hostile. My interpretation, watching the video is it is a video from someone trying to wrap their head around the product, and simply being open about their experiences. There is nothing wrong with that. Larger companies pay good money for this kind of customer feedback on user experience, so from my perspective it is good that this exists.

Regarding your "plugin overview" problem: In top left of the pop-up browser, click the “show all sources” button, then click the “collections” tab and create a collection. Name it appropriately. In your example, “transient designers” perhaps and colour it as you like. You will notice that you now have a “transient designer” collection icon in the browser toolbar (most left column of the pop-up browser window - if you hover over it, it will show its name) Now, in the browser, right mouse click on a transient designer VST of your choice and tick the “transient designers” collection button. That transient designer will now appear in the “transient designers” collection……along with any others that you put there. Obviously, you can utilise this method with any kind of collection you want: eq, delay, reverb, instruments etc…. Hope that helps.

I've found that when switching to a new DAW you have to develop a completely new workflow that is better suited to your new DAW. You have to completely forget how you did things in your old DAW and develop new and different ways of working, all DAW's have their strengths and weaknesses.

Not really a completely new workflow. More like 5-10% different. It’s not like you remove VSTs before recording, move the mouse up and down to set tempo, and click really fast to increase compression. The workflow is almost identical, not completely different.

I guess the solution to the toggle button issue is using the activate/deactivate function of Bitwig (Alt+A for me). It works with devices, midi- and audio clips. You even get a visual representation if a clip is active or not.

I've decided to try out Bitwig just for one reason - this is a "fresh" code. No +/- 20 years of legacy stuff coming along. And surprisingly Bitwig is very responsive, snappy, manages heavy CPU loads easyly.

On your first point. Something is up with your import settings because it should just detect the tempo and work pretty well. Regarding the stretching there is a function called scale 50 and 200 that you can set a keyboard shortcut. There’s a difference between onsets and warping as well. Find the start point of where you want it to fix and then create the end point so that wait it’s constrained. You can also right click and quantize audio or type in the og tempo in the inspector if you get a wonky import. I never get bogged down by audio warping like this

Hey Marc, you can use option+a on mac to toggle stuff off and on. Works on entire tracks and individual clips too :) Also, when you want to edit stuff directly (type values) you can use cmd+click on the field like @olnium says, you can also triple-click for the same on most sliders too I've found. Double click returns to default.

6. Arranger/Mixer overview hmm i don'T see anything bitwig could not do in the mixerview it is basically the same, ofc you have to hide your clips and in/out and show the plugins, bitwig has the track controls in the mixer as well, huge meters etc, oyu can adjust width etc, should be no hassle, just try out different buttons to show hide things.

1. i only watched the first complaint, you are doing it wrong. instead of markers, plainly duplicate the whole track first just to find out the exact bpm. you cut away the intro/garbage till the beats start and consolidate now you put the start on 0 and now the crucial part, you shift drag the tempo numbers to fine adjust, (in the top left corner in your video). you also have to start the drag on the rightmost number as this will be a difference in how fine it changes. lastly you can cmd click to type in values, and this one goes in far more detail than what is showed, you can go many decimals more resolution when you found the exact tempo you adjust it on the original one with a copy paste, now everything is "extrapolated" how you wanted it.

It would drive me bonkers, if collecting save was the default. Your project folder directories would be a massive directory with tons of duplicate audio files. I do understand how it would enable you in your scenario, but the general population only has one workstation.

80% of issues are not issues, they are just "you are not used to Bitwig yet" things. Melodyne like tool is the major thing which Bitwig or Ableton should work on. Both DAWs don't seem to include this necessary functionality. Even Reaper has it's own melodyne like pitch correction plugin.

Dude why don't you just remove the scenes from the mixer view and drag the faders up? You can also add Big Meters for full control of mixing. Nothing wrong with the mixer imho. I agree, the browser on the right-hand side just doesn't make sense, but create your own collections and add them as shortcuts to the left-hand side so you can quickly access your favorite plugins and presets.

Re: Problem 1, use the inspector on the left. After you've figured out your sampled track's tempo, you can just type it into the clip's tempo field. Done. The entire track will be strethed to your project tempo. No need to mess around with the stretch markers.

Hi Marc!

You aren't mentioning about the freeze option in Ableton. I've been requesting this option THOUSAND of times. And people just don't get how easy is just to freeze a channel and don't have to bounce it, disable a track. that occupies space in the arrangement view. I've been using bitwig since 2014! I don't understand when will this freeze option come.
@gt4032
@gt4032 24 күн бұрын
I hate the freeze function in Ableton. Bounce and bounce in place with the addition of hybrid tracks are far superior. Also being able to fully unload and deactivate plugins from CPU and ram. Bitwig is also better optimised and far more stable. Freeze will never come because it’s a regression. Ex Ableton devs after all 😉
@deckling823
@deckling823 24 күн бұрын
@@gt4032 what I like about freeze is that you can easily go back to edit the clip if you want to do a change. And freeze again to save CPU. If you bounce in place the midi clip or original audio is gone.
@yomilky6283
@yomilky6283 7 күн бұрын
This trick = same labor as Ableton's total freeze/unfreeze times: 1) bounce not in place 2) drag the unbounced track to a DEACTIVATED folder named something like "FROZEN", which you can always edit, re-activate (whole folder or drag out track).

1998 called. It wants its pseudo elite bullshit some users, who are happy about managing to draw a triangle after having a very hard time trying to achieve that themselves, barf at other people to cope with their own inabilities back. RTFM yelling was never a cool thing to do but the times that people unironically thought they have the right to do it just because they can read a sentence thats more complicated than ' Mum and Dad buy groceries' are over for more than 10 years now. Yes Linux community still has some left over idiots but the RTFM yellers greatest idol Liinus Torvalds even settled back long time ago and promised to try on behaving. Note how I am already at this point making you as someone whoe yelled RTFM look like a 12 year old. But ima go even lower as 12 year olds are old enough to be smarter than that already. Due to the comparibly very low complexity of software tools, your ability to handle bitwig does not make you some superbrain that is allowed to shit on other people who YOU think know less than you do, when you are most probably rather in some deep dunning kruger valley instead anyways. Handling a software tool like bitwig is something any 7-9 year old is able to perform. In fact when I finished the third level of Battletoads and Battlemaniacs on the SNES when I was in first grade, I already did something harder than using a software tool. Stop bragging about that, come up with some useful comment or simply be quiet.
