Hi. I have just turned 17 and is passionate about running. It is my life ambition and dream to be a mountain ultra runner, I would love to go out and run beatutiful trails and take part in ultras. I am from the Uk and do not live in such great areas - I have travelled to some amazing locations and I know the feeling and joys a runner gets out on trails. However, I have been advised by almost everyone that I should not be training for such races, avoid high weekly mileage and focus on speed whilst I am young. Like Sebastian I dream to become one of the worlds elite ultra runners and take part in events such as the skyrunner world series and for me (no pun intended) I am in it for the long run. By this, I mean that I am keeping my weekly mileage (about 80km/week) fairly low, including 3 sessions a week (speed work, like Sebastians 10x400 track work, slower but longer xc type sessions and threshold runs), a long run and a steady run. I used to do 35k long runs every week but now it's a boring maximum of 16k because it is supposed to be damaging for people under 24. I do enjoy what I do and go to the trails whenever I can though the life i dream of is currently like Sebastians. I have plans to live in such locations and travel the worlds running soon as I am nearly an adult. The races I do are XC which are about 7km long, I have done fell (mountain/hill races), 5k in 15.30, 1500, 4.09 and my v02 is about 71. I don't know how sebastian has managed such high v02 with mostly trails and easy runs but I can only imagine it is due to the altitude, which i do not have access to. I train smart and havent been injured in a while so I wonder how Sebastian trains. I would like to race him one day when I also reach my peak, that I will build up to when I am about 20. If anyone could put me in contact with him or explain how he trains and who else he looks up to (for me it is Kilian Jornet) then that would be amazing. I aspire to run these wonderful ultras but I am in it fo rthe long run and building my speed whilst young. So for me, Sebastian is a great inspiration.

few observations: this kid is going to burn himself out. the body is still developing at 16 and the load of strain required for a 62 mile run is too much. his legs also have next to no muscle mass and push-off, making his running economy sloppy and weak, which also contributes to the fact he could only do the 10x400m at 70 seconds per lap. he needs some fundamental strength building and to fix his form.
@oscarmckean4625
@oscarmckean4625 2 жыл бұрын
could not agree more he is going to burn out very quickly and nobody will know who he is.i have raced with kids who win nationals in Australia when they are 13 and by the time they are 15-16 they have quit running and hate it and have stress fractures
@Kelly_Ben
@Kelly_Ben 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with the burnout and still developing body, but he's an endurance runner- working on speed is good overall, but his goal is sustaining an 8-10 minute mile pace for high elevation ultras. Focusing on getting his track workout times as low as possible brings a higher risk of injury for small payoff given his goals.
@sebrunsfar
@sebrunsfar 2 жыл бұрын
This is Sebastian and with all due respct, what I can tell you is that although I have been running on trails for 10 years, the majority has been jog-hiking. I have never had one running injury, ever, other than trip and fall scrapes. I have never run big mileage, in fact my average week is about 35 miles. Compare this to the typical high school cross country runner logging around 50 miles per week at the same age as me then the argument weakens. I do appreciate your opinion, but just know that so far there has been no scientific study or evidence that links distance running in youth to any type of sports related injury. When you actually look at youth sports injury statistics (my parents did), compared to the top "ball" sports with many thousands of joint, bone, ligament, and concussions per year, running is not even in the top 20. On the contrary, one study on youth sports injuries said that if a youth is asymptomatic, that distance running could benefit performance in other sports. So, as I have said before , I like my chances!

There is a reason why most endurance races and marathons and ultra marathons have age limits. It’s not healthy, he should focus on shorter races now and build his speed endurance rather than running his legs into the ground. But you do you.
@Chrislubey__1
@Chrislubey__1 2 жыл бұрын
He should do him because his body is probably not made to do speed work probaly but run longer distances. Everyone has different genetics and some people are made to do speed and some people are made to run longer. He would probably get injured if he did high amounts of speed work out or even low amounts. And plus is what you enjoy doing and think of what cross-country athletes are doing these days 50, 69, 70 miles a week with high intensity and fast workouts
