That's very, very cool! I internalized the PSU of my Amiga 500 with a PICO simply because A500 PSU's are so expensive in the States. Great vidya!

Nice project Maddi. I looked at those Pico PSUs a while back for other projects. Imagine my surprise when you opted to use one for an Amiga. You had me talking to my monitor, "don't forget to drill air holes!" ... phew. Nicely done.

Great video! I did something similar a few years back with the 80watt Pico. I've also installed one inside an Atari STe computer too. Lots of flexible ways they can be used.

I did the same thing a few months ago, but I stuffed the stripped AC-DC brick and the PicoPSU into the original Amiga PSU case. you can get a bunch more room by desoldering the ATX connector.

I will almost guarantee you the green screen on the A500 is a corroded or just old Agnus socket rather than RAM. So you can pull the Agnus and look for any dodgy connections, clean them and it should be fine. You will probably want to replace the socket though, they cost like 2 dollars :). Great video by the way.

Guessing there wasn't enough space inside the black power brick to mount the Pico? Would eliminate the need for two boxes in parallel and make everything super compact haha.

Oh, the exciting tinkering you do.. :o) How elegant and well done, Maddi! - I always thought the Return keys on foreign Amigas were friggin' huge! It's much smaller on the nordic machines, because of those strange æ, ø and å characters, hehee.. :o) (I'd probably be one of those who put it inside as well. Maybe I don't know enough about electronics, to feel I shouldn't, lol..)

Thanks Brian :o) Putting the pico it inside is just fine, sometimes those square DIN plugs aren't available so one only has that choice, I just had a few spare so i thought i'd do it this way :o) Actually there are two types, My A500 has a large return key and my A600 and A1200 have the small one :o) .. unless the return on the Nordic ones are even smaller than that? :oO

One should always do it like one wants it to be, and be happy with that. Whatever the reason. And I think your way is very nice. The fan mis-allignment is just charm! ^_^ Oh, maybe only the A500's has the large key.. We can can compare keyboard layouts sometime soon, for fun? :o) Sounds like my nordic A1200 has the same size as your A600 & A1200. Huh.. Peculiar..

I would be happy to send you some new square DIN Amiga, C128 power connectors as a thank you for your great videos. That way you won't have to cut the cord off your old power supplies :)

Great job Maddi :) Love how you flux! :D:D:D As for the big white connector, I would have desoldered it completely as it's useless and takes up space... and also, another cabletie on the white cable to be on the safe side :)

Great video. I was wondering if you could follow this video up with a guide to using this pico psu to power multiple devices off one unit. For example a raspberry pi, a hard drive and an small audio amp. Keep up the good work.

Axial fan aerodynamics 101: Intake area >> exhaust area. You could say they really suck at sucking. Now spot the problem... I'd suggest watching some Gamers Nexus case reviews from the last year or two. PC case manufacturers, it turns out, have their share of issues understanding airflow, too...

Oh dear, I feel like a right 'orrible' person writing this. I am a great fan of yours young lady. The fan off center is OK but where does the hot air go ? Nowhere. It's a good idea to have exit holes to allow the hot air to escape. What you have will help of course but a few 6mm hones here and there would make it much, much better. Your a very brave lady. Lovely videos always.

The hot air comes out the top... The holes at the bottom of the case are inlets...As mentioned in the video.

Funnily enough I just put the same Gelid fan inside my A600 to stop my issues with the Vampire crashing due to heat. Got it mounted in a small 3D printed bracket I designed. It works nicely, just wish it could still be quieter

I got a second fan just to do exactly, that, it gets hotter than I expected so i'll be figuring out some way or other to mount it

I found it froze/hung/restarted when left rubbing stuff like ADoom for a couple of hours. With the fan fitted I have left it running for over 8 hours straight with no issues. I designed a vent to blow air over and under the card which I put on Thingiverse, but found blowing the warm air out the top worked just as well and took up less room. I upload the design for my bracket tomorrow and give you the link

Re: making it quieter, have you tried elastic mounting? Hard mounting a fan is like giving it a big resonator (the case) and the best way of making every bit of vibration heard. That said, these little 40mm fans tend to be quite high RPM as-is, it's not easy to get them particularly quiet.

I had some of those silicon anti vibration things but they didn't really make any difference, so use some tac under each corner so it doesn't vibrate and rattle. Think that being a 40mm fan it won't ever be too quiet unless i stick a 47ohm resister on it to knock it down to around 9v and slow it down some.

I recommend Ian Stedman's picoPSU ATX adaptor. Then you don't need to solder directly on the picoPSU

Do you recommend these cheap Pico psu's from China? I am thinking about buying a mini-itx case and it comes with a 150w Pico psu, should I get a good quality one line "HD-plex"?

Maybe you should have another hole in that case for the air to get in. Because that fan can only blow out, what gets in somewhere else. This way, it is only stiring a bit. Nice project.

Thanks! .. Actually that side of the fan kinda has some protection, also the fan isnt installed squarely so it will look like an eyesore lol

Love this project. Would this Pico PSU solution also work well on an A1200 (with an 68030 expansion, CFcard, PCMCIA network card + extra diskdrive)?

Thanks! On my standard A500 PSU Vampire A600 appears to struggle and not boot up into the SD card, but with this, it's a breeze, and runs nice and cool too.

Hey Maddi, just a lil heads up, it's advised not to use gloves when drilling stuff, they can snag on the bit etc. :) Nice lil project!

i think it will be fine. it's not a long sleeve or something like that. i don't think it will wrap arround. actually i am shure it wont. this way her hands are more protected if she snaps out. she did scare me much more the last time when Maddi tried to drill a hole, whow did she scared the creeps outta me. i prefer to see that Maddi starts to wear her nice hair in a knot. when doeing these kinda jobs. actually i used to have a pony-tale back in the days but when i started using big CNC machines i cut everyting off before a machine did. easy and save. ps. Maddi, dont wear your hair like me, it not suits you;)

Actually I initially didnt wear gloves and the plastic case slipped through my hands and started spinning... you might notice at one point of the video my hand is very red lol 9:50.. it hurt a bit so hence the glove. Jan, I always tie my hair back when drilling or dremeling.. machines can be scary things! :oO

I just can't decide what to do. My old A500 PSU (The heavy one) is old and doesn't work well. I'm sure I could just recap it and it will be fine but it's still only 2.5A so it isn't really enough since I have a 68030 accelerator in it. I read that an ATX PSU isn't all that safe as well but the Pico is just so darn expensive.

Keep hold of your A500 psu, im in the same situation and im about to do a video series on replacing the innards of my A500 heavy psu.. maybe it could inspire you, ive just bought a meanwell psu that will fit inside the A500 psu case.

I've never seen someone giggle while soldering before. Also, I wish someone would produce some new square power connectors. I just can't bear the thought of cutting the cord off my A500 power supply.

This is also a nice new PSU for your low-end Amiga? Take a look at this one: amitopia.com/new-amiga-power-supply-replacement-review/ It is smaller, sexier and will last for a long time. The connector is also in very good condition. Great product for Amiga 500, Amiga 600 and Amiga 1200! Check out why... many solutions

Probably your A500 needs a new 68K. Put the ACA500 to her and see what happens.

I got a call and didn't pause the video just lowered the volume a bit. Maybe I missed that part. Anyway, the only difference would have been the position of the switch and no box on the cable. But tbh I allways wanted a switch on the computer and not under the table. On my last 1200 I had a PC psu and the power button was attached to my monitors powerbutton. I had to learn the hard way that original Amiga bricks die when you have a hdd, cd burner and 040 connected at the same time. :-(
