@@jpes609 giving someone who has never done archery a 40-50 pound draw bow and they might be able to do it after futsing around and figuring out which muscle groups to use, but it really puts it in to perspective how strong you have to be for this kind of thing. A lot of guys will try to flex and do the "I cOuLd Do ThAt" and I'm over here like, "I couldn't move that bow with my car." 😂

@@YukonJack40-50 would even be quite hard for some beginners. Not just to pull it back, but to be able to hold it steady is hard to do. I’d love to be able to shoot one at 165 but that’s pretty crazy

Let's work to achieve that. It will require 3 years of perfectly balanced (not strict) diet and training IMO. If you are starting from a good point and you are already trained, conditioned, and decently built

If you're skinny fat, it's three years of consistent training and dieting without steroids. With steroids 1.5 years. This is assuming everything is perfect 365, you never get sick, injured, etc

What’s more impressive to me is the actual realization of how strong those shields are. We take them for granted in movies and games but when push comes to shove, a good shield like that can hold back a spear thrower.

​@@abbetkahjit1618an armor penetrating arrow would do less, it's more like it will produce a massive hole compared to the massive arrow's. A skilled swordsman wouldn't pull out but slice away to unlodge it. So half or your whole is gone.

Good science is repeatable. It's nice to see multiple people confirming each other's results. Todd's Workshop has some similar videos using a crossbow that was tested to be similar to this type of bow. The fact you're both getting similar results is fantastic for the authenticity of both your results as to the quality and veracity of the weapon and shields in question. Kudos!

He looks like he stepped off the set of 300 & I remember seeing an interview with Gerard Butler (Leonidas) and he was asked what it's like to look like that & he said he didn't actually look like that. He said it was mostly special effects in post and that he had a crazy work out schedule & diet. I have no doubt this gentleman is crazy active but to look like he does, without Special Effects, he's gotta be using PED's because even with crazy hard work, it's simply not natural for the human body to look like this.

I know it's joke and I hate to be that guy. But viking shields were centrally gripped. So the shield was would away from the body. The only arrow to come close to sticking to the wielder. would have been the one that stuck into the boss. that metal piece in the center. Again sorry to be that guy.

@@narrativeless404 For your information, the boss of the shield is the centermost part of the shield which is supposed to be further reinforced and possibly made of metal to prevent shallow penetrations from injuring the bearer's hand. Not sure why the arrows seems to penetrate it just fine though, when it is supposed to be the strongest part of the shield.

⁠@@villepalmu348 Heat-treated titanium achives a modest hardness on the Rockwell scale, compared to a modest steel. Not sure why even mention it at all. "Premium steel"? Simple, medium- to high- carbon steel, heat treated to be tougher than harder is what Europeans used, and it build empires. They could recognize good steel, even if tgebprocess of obtaining it wasn't well understood. Take a look at the spot-tests that were made on weapons of the era, to understand the steel (some of the later famous Solingen swords were treated to near-spring toughness for some reason).

@@villepalmu348 It's a flawed point. Even iron, if thick enough, is more than enough. Just hollow it less. This is why you can always compensate low hardness by adding more "meat" behind the edge, using steeper angles. This is why you had functional bronze swords, stone axes that actually cut trees.

Absolutely fine ? Did you see the size of those arrowheads ? Several of them penetrated though and if the shield was being held close to the body, that would cause a lot of damage. Not to mention the repeated kinetic impact of arrows from a 160lbs bow striking the shield would quickly cause fatigue and instability. The shieldbearer likely isn’t getting out of this situation alive if he can’t close the distance, and he tries to close the distance then he’s definitely dead since he’ll be more exposed.

Im suprised how well those sheilds did... but also most of the time they where used to block arrows falling from VERY high arches. Not sure how that would effect it.. but to me it makes sense that they would penetrate much further. Perhaps 3 imches
