We start this vlog in Rugeley where Michael discovers the story of William Palmer who is also known as the Rugeley Poisoner. It is fascinating tale adjacent to the Trent and Mersey Canal.
There is also the story of Christina Collins whose body was found in the canal after she embarked on a journey from Liverpool to London via Narrowboat.
If you are looking for a normal cruising vlog skip to the time code 15:24

FAQ's
Q. Where are Michael's T-shirts from?
A. Tee Republic; www.teepublic.com/t-shirts
Q. Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A. We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

Another interesting and informative video, I loved the local history story. I find stories like that quite intriguing, and how different it would be today with the forensic testing available.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 5 жыл бұрын
It is fascinating. Though, having once convicted a man of murder, it’s amazing how far forensics actually are from the impressions we’ve gotten from TV and movies. In a real trial it turns out it’s all inference and assumptions and can be just as biased towards the politically popular outcome, but with a CSI stamp of approval. M

Murder most foul..... I see spring is breaking out in England. Ohio is doing same, though we've taken some serious storm damage. The next town south had a f2 tornado tear through it . No damage here though. Expecting another storm front soon. Definitely spring in Ohio, the neighbors got their boat out of my dad's barn last weekend and had her hauled up to Lake Erie for the summer. Nice video and Thank you for sharing!

I actually bought a book out of Poundland called Death on the Waterways by Allan Scott Davies. I haven't had a proper read of it yet so as to say if it's any good. I put it in my car glovebox for when I'm picking my daughter up from work. I seem to always arrive early as traffic is unpredictable so I have a ten minute read as I wait.
@GenaF

@@MinimalList I just looked on Amazon and the book I got for a quid from Poundland is almost £8 but it has a handful of 5 stars. Also on Amazon theres another book, Murder on the Oxford Canal by Faith Martin and the lead character in the book lives on a boat in Thrupp. If you pay for Amazon Prime so as to get the TV and your parcels delivered next day for free, the Murder on the Oxford Canal is free for Kindle or the kindle app on iPhone etc and even the charge for non -prime people is very low. Never one to pass up a freebie, I'm reading it now.

I've been looking through the vlogs for a while now to find where you passed through where I live, and found it unexpectedly. The history lesson was good but please don't call Rugeley a 'murderous' (or murderer's) town. I'm an incomer, having lived here for only 40 years. The canal is a row of houses away - we can hear passing boats but not see them. The local branch of the IWA has adopted the section near the Bloody Steps and work parties are held to keep it looking smart. A few years ago a new stretch of towpath was laid between the aqueduct and the new bridge carrying the bypass. I married a Rugeley lass and we love the place. Please come again.

That was superb; thank you! One of your best-ever vlogs and much appreciated. Might I suggest (and this may help you) that you split your vlog into two next time, as there were two very distinct themes. Also, your lapel-mike makes a tremendous difference - the quality and level of sound were far worse on the stern, as opposed to around the town. Mike investigates was excellent but we should not forget camerawoman and supervisor, Jo and whoever edits these vids (Jo?). Just because You Tube's greatest make-up expert fronts the video (and researches murder extensively) never forget the woman behind the great man. Seriously, a brill edition and really enjoyed - thank you both, again. PS don't forget gratuitous George shots :)

Thanks! We thought about splitting it in two, but the cruise seemed to tie the two stories together. Jo edits and does basically all the work, she’s amazing! We’ll do more when we find more horrors by the towpath! M

The second story sounds like one featured in an episode of Inspector Morse.

It was the basis for one of the Morse books, though it was moved to Oxford and quite a few liberties were taken with the story. M

Aussum video Mike. Thought the history lesson was terrific, if you're so inclined I think that it's a great idea. A lot of other vlogers are all the same same . This video has been tremendously interesting. Thanks guys

I like to add little bits of history, but usually it’s just little bits about battlefields and what not when we happen across them. I’ll keep an eye out for more bits to ramble on about in the future! M

Brilliantly Investigated Michael, what a great vlog, really interesting history of the area where you were and well explained as usual. Old journalism hasn't changed much but I bet modern crime detection technology would have nailed Palmer anyway, just saying. All the best Stevie

It’s a bit difficult saying what modern forensics would come up with... the case for tetanus is as good as the case for strychnine, given what’s known from his symptoms and the post-mortem. Much was made in the press of the day about the possibility of him doctoring the stomach contents, but short of having flushed and washed them with several different organic solvent baths, it’s unclear how he could have done so via the small holes reported in the bladder sealing the jars. Strychnine isn’t very soluble in water or alcohol, and most other solvents he could have introduced would have been quite detectable, even by the rudimentary chemistry of the day. The symptoms of cook don’t include complaints about a bitter taste, but do include burning of the throat, but only the former is associated with strychnine. Also Cook was said to have vomited quite a lot, which actually isn’t associated with acute strychnine poisoning. So I wouldn’t be too sure. M
