One of the questions frequently asked about garden railways is "How much space do I need?" so we set out to try and show some 16mm to the foot / 1:19 scale garden railways in context including from above using a DJI Mavic Air drone

Thanks for putting that together. I've watched videos for years of skillful low shots making lines full of scenes. However, it is amazing to see the drone shots to get an idea of how everyone is really doing it. All of the many 16mm railroaders have really inspired me. I hope it inspires many others as a nice long term outdoor hobby, blended with gardening to whatever degree desired. I've only just started my line at a newer location, and progress is painfully slow, with many other projects calling me. Hopefully, I have lots of time. Again, to all of you who share video or allow video on your railways, thank you!

Thanks Jasper. Yes a lot of video I’ve shot has been “lineside” or even onboard 16mm trains and apart from occasional comments about the speed some drivers do, real steam and carefully landscaped environments give a very prototypical feel, so pleased that you’ve been inspired by these sorts of shots. The amazing technology of drones has allowed me to explore the 16mm environment from a different perspective and to satisfy some viewers desire to see just how such a railway can be blended into a garden, something that can be an important element in getting “planning permission “ for a garden railway! More inspiration can be found in the 16mm Association Guide and other publications see www.16mm.org.uk

Thanks John, welcome to the garden railway hobby. If you have a look around the Brockle Broadcasting channel I’ve got quite a few videos of garden railways as well as heritage lines for inspiration. If you are not already a 16mm member then do go on the www.16mm.org.uk website, there’s a 15 months for the price of 12 membership deal in the last quarter of the membership year which includes bonus magazines and access to an ever expanding back catalogue of online magazine issues from the last 40+ years!

@@MrRnipperBrockleBroadcasting Yes, the first thing I did was join the 16mm Association and I have your Guide and Quarterlies beside me. I'll explore your suggested channels with a great deal of interest. This new hobby is filling my lockdown beautifully!

@@weymouthjohn Welcome to the Association John. If you look in the Resources section of the 16mm Website there's several videos on things like boiler testing and track building, then on You Tube have a look at channels such as Summerlands steam like this one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a71ifcZ42tyslHU.html and Granite island, also the South Yorkshire 16mm Group. Hopefully the National Show will be back on Sat 26th June 2021 still probably the largest show of its kind and the place where 16mm and garden railway suppliers launch new products to visitors from around the World (hopefully!)

@@MrRnipperBrockleBroadcasting Got that date in my diary thanks. The only information I'm short of at the moment is to do with track spacing for my 32mm track. I only have a 0-4-0 Millie but one day I may have bigger locos on my track. How many cms should I have between the inner rails on my straights/curves.

@@weymouthjohn have a look at the standards for the Modular Layout on the 16mm website, they have published suggested clearances based on largest current models, off the top of my head I think the suggestion is something like a minimum of 75mm / 3 inches either side of the track centre line, but the general advice is make curves as wide as you can, gradients as gentle as possible, and loading gauge as generous as possible as you never know what visiting or future stock may turn up!

My railway is very modest in comparison to those and is nearly fitted into an 8 ft X 20 ft space. I say nearly as it is not finished yet.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Garden railways come in all shapes and sizes, the main thing is that you enjoy operating trains in the garden!

Good Work Cousin, i must get up to see your line at some point!

Cheers Peter. Not much to see at BrockRail as in normal circumstances we benefit from the large number of other local lines available!
