I know that it's complicated, but if recycled stuff costs SO MUCH MORE than normal stuff, people will still want to use the normal, not everyone can afford sustainability! And THAT is a huge problem!

It's the oil subsidies that's making virgin plastic cheaper than recycled ones. Cancel the subsidies and recycled plastic will automatically become cheaper

Sweden has always been great an burning most of the garbage we produce, and turn it into electricity, it's gotten so big, that most companies that produce electricity from garbage actually imports trash from Norway, Denmark and Finland. I'm from Sweden, and I am actually happy that people have started to take care of the plastics and garbage that's getting thrown onto the streets and oceans, and use it to produce, etc. Electricity.

The fumes are scrubbed, so it's CO2 that comes out. This would be the case in either way for the load bearing power plants that are needed to make up for wind and solar-power. But yeah, would be nice to take this away as well, maybe use the CO2 in a greenhouse for fast growing bamboo or something like that :)

I bought myself a lunch box a year ago, coming with a plastic knife, a fork/spoon, and a pair of chopsticks. I'm still using the same a year later, they're easy to clean off and the box is made to accomodate them when I take it. A year after, and a lot of lunches after, even if they go to the trash I won't feel like they would be wasted. Still ,they're doing the job just fine.

Personally I save my chopsticks for reuse I used it for all kinds of things I’m a painter used to stir paint, mix glue and various sorts of projects I do not waste them they’re really useful also mixing Apoxsee.

We did the eternal reef with my papi's remains. He lived in Florida. B4 we got on the boat n dropped it off some where off the coast of Florida (my mom knows the exact location) i shaded a piece of paper over the plaque on it n put it in a frame n have it on my shelf. It was really cool..

The common theme across all these "green/sustainable" programs from big companies are at most a marketing and greenwashing gimmick. The principle attention should be on reducing consumption and re-using already manufactured resources. There is a huge disconnect between scalability and these experimental programs.

I agree. Though the problem with reducing consumption, making products more recyclable, or even degrowth in order to stave of environmental collapse is that there is of course no financial incentive to do so. It is antithetical to the current economic world order. While some of these companies have promise, they all focus on waste; they all focus on the result of a wasteful system and not on the system itself. While it should be their principle to focus on the true source of waste and it’s environmental effect, that is something which-even if they had sufficient financial interest to do- could not actually do anything about. This is something that requires collective action.

nope none of that works, plastic producing companies increase making plastic year after year so you can reduce reuse and recycle all you want there's still going to be more and more plastic been made. the companies that keep making plastic are the ones polluting not the people, so the people can not solve this problem only the companies can.

@@roldiny Very wrong. “People can’t solve this only companies can” is not correct. It’s a simple supply and demand thing, people want/need plastic goods, forks, straws etc so these companies make and supply them. If that demand stops or reduces, the company will have to do the same. It starts with people leading more sustainable lives that will force these companies to change their manufacturing processes and materials to be more sustainable. If there’s zero demand or a reduction in demand, companies will have to stop or reduce making plastic products in order to remain a profitable business.

I would love to have the thongs (maybe an old fashion term ?) but I am 73 yrs old with a hip replacement and I need a shoe with an upper part, and no back. I am sure the material like leather that was shown earlier would do the trick. I also loved the packaging that was also shown that you can tear up and plant for flowers. That product should sell for any packaging except some food ones lol. This video should be shown in school classrooms or made more attractive to watch for kids. Thank God for smart people like these guys. The incense sticks should be sold everywhere...please and thank you!

Bought 4 metal raised beds like yours on special for next year's gardens. Summer project was putting in a solid wood fence. Hope this will keep the deer out. They even chewed off the tops of my tomatoes. Put side supports so the soil won't bow out the sides of the raised beds.Have already started composting on the bottoms.

This was the only one which I thought was the most controversial since algae are living organisms. So we’re basically killing the living organisms that small sea life feed on to create a product that would otherwise end up in the small and big sea life environment. The pro’s to this is that they’re farming the algae they could never extract it from the sea since it’s too small. This leaving the sea habitat unbothered. The cons is that there’s a carbon foot print to farm the algae.

I love these ideas! All we need is for new plastic to be just a penny more expensive than recycled plastic and then there will be incentive for companies to use recycled materials. A penny per ton would be enough to shift the big businesses mindset on the matter.

i'm actually very disgusted of this practice, especially "baking" the sticks in order to kill bacteria. Don't forget these sticks contain food remains and people saliva and god knows what could come out of a persons mouth and hands. And I dont see the good part in it, for what are they doing this? To save trees? come on, i bet there are more appropriate means to do this instead of handling germs, saliva, and cooking them alltogether. I'm stunned how they don't seem worried at all about corona up there in Canada ))

Even the whole documentary never mentioned one single measure of saving the earth in China, but they "co-incide" to mention 1.4 billion people using chopsticks to creat waste in just one LUNCH BREAK . They want you to feel less guilty when buying from the big company. Oh btw, I notice the machinery in the Avocado Bioplastic factory are made by a Chinese company.

Responsiblity is on us to become minimalist too, we need to stop over buying the next shiny product which we probably can't even afford, which then ends up in the trash sooner or later. This looks like what can be done, but what is being done, is not even solving the tip of the iceberg of the catastophic waste and mess we do produce day in and day out.

It's pretty terrible to watch this hour and more program on dealing with waste and knowing that the US is doing pretty much *NONE* of it whatsoever. Small businesses in the US are, but none of the big companies are going to bother without some heavy duty regulation or *insane* taxes on their waste (and the waste they deliver to consumers to dispose of - excess and non-recyclable single use packaging, ect).

Plastic spoons and forks might be uselss in my opinion I mean we have metal ones we can reuse over and over again But since we humans are lazy we made plastic ones that are convenient for use as with all other things There are metal chopsticks as well

And the plastic forks or spoons often are not able to pick up a bite of food with. Knives seem clumsy and cannot cut a piece of meat. Fork tines snap off on hard plastic ware and the softer ones bend double. 🤔 A complete waste. So much real silverware available in thrift stores.

These ideas are all so awesome! It’s my dream to work of a company that’s part of the solution. I have a question though.. Isn’t it also toxic and bad for people to burn the incense made of flowers that contain all of those toxic chemicals in the second segment?

7:00... Well, if those flowers contain arsenic, cadmium and the like, they sure should not go contaminating the river. But I'm still in doubt whether the idea of turning them into incense sticks and subesquently inhaling the heavy metals makes more sense health-wise. (Okay, people are using incene anyway and thus would be sourcing more fresh flowers, so the double use cuts down on that. Oh well...)

Why do you need chopsticks . It’s just a bloody status thing to show everyone in an Asian restaurant that westerners know how to use chopsticks pffft . . I’m 73 years old and I eat Chinese food with a spoon and fork . Leave the chopsticks to the Asian people and do something to save our planet.

Love the banana rug idea! Some of them are beautiful also. Have this on later and missed some of this video and walked in on that. Much love to that company from the US. I compost a lot to garden but I’d imagine chopping and chipping all those bananas so often would be a lot of work! Banana is great in fertilizer/compost though!

Reduce, reuse, recycle. In that order. We should not be relying on recycling as the main solution. The only reason it takes the front page is because it encourages more consumerism, aka more profit.

the chopstick recycling is great cause it gives a short-lived item a long-lived use. tables and floors tend to be around for a decade if not multiple. i hope this can scale because with the mass of chopsticks waste mentioned, they could supplement at least a small portion of wood. also huge credit to Bottletop for not just stealing a South American idea but rather build up a community by employing them right there and paying a fair wage. that's how aid is done right.

This really hit home. I had no idea how bad things are and how we all should be using these sources. Really made me think. I love the first one, the recycled chopsticks. Am going to look into this one more. I really hope that the IKEA recycling takes off.

The environment is the least of your worries right now. Landfills are a more than acceptable place to put our waste. Plus, they are way more environmentally friendly than recycling plastics. Unfortunately, everyone has been sold the recycling lie.

I was thinking about these flip flops...how much I looked forward to seeing a product that if chucked in the ocean would be beneficial for it but they mix them with plastic sooo then I started thinking is spreading algae around on our feet all day and the ground actually going to be beneficial or more harmful.

Love these types of videos :) Regarding the bread in France... If a bakery makes 50 banquettes a day but only 40 sell.. then the following day they should only make 40. This would reduce the left over bread, no ?

Not necessarily. If a business is constantly sold out because it didn't produce enough, it leads to a reduction in business over the long term. Consumers tend to spend less time in an understocked shop/bakery than they do in a fully stocked one. It is a hard balance to reach and ultimately will produce waste based on common consumer habits. We could change the habits in time, but until then the waste needs a way to be used.

@@laurent3415 good point. In my country, we call this "hungry eye phenomenon", where we decide to take a product out of large bundle instead that one that's sitting alone on the shelf. But on the other hand, in our culture, bread was never wasted. Bread crumbs are one of the most common products, sold by bakeries, supermarkets, small grocery stores etc. We also make them at home by simply drying pieces of bread and grinding them in a food processor, blender or in a simple pestle and mortar.

I’ve worked in the restaurant/bar business in the US for 23+ years. Lauren T is absolutely right. We work on a par system, but if we have 40 steaks and 41 guests that want a steak, that 41st guest complains to us and their social circle, they get something free in return, and the odds that any of those people come back when they can go next door is hugely decreased. It’s a constant balancing act. You know Americans; better to have more than you need and throw the extra away than to ever have less.

Our local bakery routinely cuts unsold, bread into cubes or crumbs, for resale. I do that with my own bread. I put the cubes into buttered bakeware, along with any appropriate 'leftovers' & herbs, pour well blended eggs, and topping of grated cheese, and it becomes a dish called a Wifesaver. It can be frozen or stored 4 days in the fridge. Delicious.

Most disposable Chopsticks are made of bamboo which is a grass that readily grows. It is quite sustainable if we use it to heat homes or make charcoal briquettes for grills. The carbon cycle continues to the air and the bamboo turns it into chopsticks.

Kinda true. However the tables they're making are also replacing ones that might have been made from wood, metal or other materials. So the effect is larger than you're portraying.
