17-year-old Bob Dylan Sings His Songs [The Kangas Tape - 1959]

Swingin’ Pig

3 жыл бұрын

This was recorded sometime in May 1959 at the home of Ric Kangas in Hibbing, Minnesota. Kangas was one of Dylan's friends at the time and fellow singer-songwriter.
The full tape is believed to include four songs:
1. When I Got Troubles [officially released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7, so blocked from KZfaq for copyright]
2. I Wish I Knew [written by Ric Kangas]
3. Teen Love Serenade [first song in this video]
4. The Frog Song [second song in this video]
With the exception of the second track, which is not in circulation, all the songs were written by Dylan himself, making this one of the earliest recordings of Dylan's original material and subsequently a very important document of his history. The melodies and lyrics are reminiscent of 1950s pop music, reflecting Dylan's earliest influences: Little Richard, Johnny Ace, Buddy Holly, etc. In "The Frog Song", for instance, Dylan is clearly channeling Clarence "Frogman" Henry. In the next year, he finds inspiration in Woodie Guthrie and other folk artists and leaves behind Little Richard for a while. Dylan was into rock 'n roll far before the "Newport massacre", and this tape shows where that spark of electricity came from.

Unless it is a hoax, there is a recording from 1959, "The Bus Song," which I've heard once. If it isn't a hoax, it's obvious that it is this recording Dylan got that "middle Bob", sneering voice from. Does anyone know anything about this?

Once he found his voice and the reflections of his lyrics within his chosen chord concepts and song forms, he was on his way to being the complete individual artist we have come to know him to be..He went from mimicry to originality in just a few years and knew he was on to something with the amount of content he had manifested.

Which God would bless Robert Zimmerman (Bob Dylan)? The last thing Dylan wanted others to uncover is that he was Jewish. Only decades after he exhausted all his other B.S. stories did Dylan offer a recounting of his bar mitzvah. So, I'll ask you again; which God? Is it the God that made his net worth an estimated $200 million?

Poet Laureate Bob Dylan at 17 writing and singing about love. It is most assuredly Dylan. The poetic phrasing is there, the melody is there, even his guitar style is there, all of them ready to explode into the phenomenon that he became. Crimson flames tied through my ears...but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

So far a lot hear the Caruso voice becoming clear, even if it took years to perfect. But perfect it he did. He still sings like Caruso to me, plays every kind of music he wants to, records it for posterity, writes a good book when he can, does some narratives behind the mike on the radio, makes a movie now and then and still has the energy to play a couple hundred concerts every year or so. That "little Bobby Dylan" is a pretty big man. He's an artist and he don't look back.
