17-Year-Old Student Pilot Emergency When Landing Gear Falls Off
Episode 3 of Air Traffic Control Stories
17-year-old student pilot, Maggie Taraska, had just taken off from Beverly Regional Airport in Massachusetts for her first solo cross-country flight, headed for Portland, Maine. But, just a few minutes into the flight, her plane, a Piper PA-28, lost its right main wheel.
A pilot on the ground saw the wheel fall off the plane and contacted air traffic control, who then contacted Maggie.
This is the conversation between Maggie Taraska and air traffic control on September 9, 2018.
Air traffic control audio licensed from LiveATC.net.
Unnecessary communications and pauses were trimmed for clarity.
The positions of the aircraft may not be 100% accurate. Only involved aircraft are shown. Animations are based on air traffic control communications and data from flight tracking services.

@@YuriRosas_Her lack of experience might mean she doesn’t know that. Also, you can be scared when unexpected things happen even if you don’t believe you’re going to die. Uncertainty is especially scary for people who lack confidence in their ability to handle a situation (like a student, who has never prepared for these circumstances and may lack confidence even without the additional complication). tldr; Stress goes from motivating to debilitating when you think you can’t manage the cause.

I cannot _begin_ to imagine how terrified I would be. Wonderful job to Maggie, to ATC, and to instructor John. First solo flight seems like one of those times a person would feel like they've made it out of the woods, too. She accomplished something most people can only hope they would be capable of, in a scenario and under pressure everyone hopes they never have to face.

Actually, if you listen to the other videos on this story, not her first solo flight but her first solo cross-country flight. But that doesn't take away at all from the outstanding manner in which this girl handled this emergency. Apparently, first solo cross-country is quite a nerve-wracking flight to prepare for and negotiate. You just do not want this thing to happen solo with this few hours' flying experience, even less on your first cross-country sortie. I am full of admiration with how this girl conquered her initial terror and took control of the situation. Kudos also to the instructor who calmed her and talked her all the way down to the landing. HIs cool, reassuring words of encouragement and quietly authoritative instructions to Maggie about what to do were a joy to listen to. If I ever were to take flying lessons, I could not covet a better flying instructor than this man. Incidentally, five days later she was back up on a flight with him in the passenger seat as her instructor.

This one ALWAYS brings whole range of emotions in me. So heart warming and overwhelming to note that there was such excellent camaraderie for the other pilot to actually report it. And obviously hats-off to you🙇🏻‍♂️ Maggie👌🏼👍🏼.. but just as much to the team in the tower who could calm Maggie's nerves down and finally how John sir💙🤍 like a true professional.. still dropped in that much pressure of 'center line' on to his super nervous student. Ny the way her voice was much less stressed once she heard the reassuring words from a voice familiar to her.

These are my favourite videos. I'm usually a cynical person so when I hear these stories of people getting together to help someone in distress it restores my faith in humanity. Thanks for posting this! By the way, I admire that Maggie was back in a plane continuing to learn after her scary incident. She must really want to be a pilot, and I suspect she'll make a better one than she would have otherwise before this incident. This is all part of her experience of being a pilot, and knowing how she will react in an emergency and how to get through it. Major kudos to Maggie and everyone that helped her!

What you said makes no sense and is nowhere near the truth. An instructor will only allow a student pilot to fly solo after they have clearly demonstrated the ability to fly by themselves, which is no easy task for a student pilot. Based on how she flew in a very stressful emergency event (especially for a student pilot with no instructor on the plane), I would say that she demonstrated excellent flying skills. She clearly has the skills to fly, which is exceptional for her age.

Could be me, but I think when you take on something like getting your pilot license, you should be a strong and assured personality. A mousy personality that sounds like you are about to crawl up and scream help doesn't seem like you should be a pilot. I'm not trying to be mean, but she sounded way to non-confident to me to handle emergency situations that arise in the sky. She literately sounded like she was crying the second they told her. I get it, it's terrifying. But this is when you need to buck up and assure yourself you got this. If not for you, for the many people who are in danger down below.

I agree with you in a general sense, but I don’t think this girl’s reaction to this situation can be used as a benchmark for her entire personality lol. Assurance comes from experience. Confidence doesn’t come from nowhere. You learn to trust yourself and your competence through the repetition of success. Repetition she _didn’t have,_ as she was flying her first solo lol. Also, she’s 17? Still growing and maturing? Maybe this is first Serious Situation™ she’s been in. She did fine lol So, her voice wobbled a couple times ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ She got nervous. I disagree. She did nothing wrong and brought the plane in safely. This was an emergency situation and was handled perfectly. Just criticizing her personal emotion in the moment has nothing to do with it. If her gear had not fallen off and you could then listen to what would have been a normal solo flight would you still think she is unfit?

@@commercialsoundandvideo2890 In my opinion, flying a plane is responsible job. Much more than driving a car. and she acted like typical woman behind the wheel. Crying and doing nothing. You have to act, be able to put aside emotion in emergency situation to think clear and straight. Finding best solution and course of action. This student showed shes unable to do that. It is not suppose to be leading by the hand by someone. She should act cool and response to tower with solution after she got info about missing wheel. And everything took to long, even other planes had to delay. plane was safe. I would understand if she was flying with instructor first time and instructor is incapacitated in some way.. but she was flying solo. Like, you have to be somebody, have some skill and level to be able to that.
