170: PNSO Iguanodon (Harvey 2021) Review

This is probably PNSO’s last reveal for the year, and what a way to wrap up the end of the year… with what could be said to be the beginning of dinosaurs and palaeontology
The Iguanodon has gone through many changes, I am happy to have an updated one from PNSO.
Though not as well-known as the Big Three (T Rex, Triceratops and Brontosaurus) Iguanodon is nonetheless important, popular, and recognizable. Sporting an elegant bauplan similar to the hadrosaurids to which they are closely related, this model has a build that calls to mind that elegance that I have not seen in a long time.
The detail has to be seen to be believed, and held in hand to fully appreciate. But you will be able to admire the sculpting and craftsmanship on this model, and with an interesting though understated colour palette that belies the simple majesty of this pioneering dinosaur, this is a worthy model for your shelf, and will be a splendid addition to your other iguanodonts.

Thank you Mike! You absolutely got one of the key goals I am trying to achieve with my videos. I wanted to share the science of dinosaurs as I am learning it myself, because in knowing more about the actual animal behind a model, some might actually appreciate it more. Others are deciding if they should spend money on an expensive Chinese import, and maybe some of that background info can help them decide yay or nay. It's actually how I even first read up on Scansriopterygidae, a group I had zero interest in. Then I saw photos of Jay Carriere's life size sculpt of Epidexipteryx, and was so intrigued I started to read more. Curiosity is often stirred up by models, and the more people want to learn about these magnificent animals the better. And who knows, on a very macro level, maybe it might get them starting to think about the world, appreciate Nature, and even start them off on something lifechanging!

Beautiful! We were eagerly awaiting your review, so very eloquent and in-depth, as always :-) Iguanodon is certainly one of my favourite dinosaurs, and this model encapsulates much that I find beautiful about the animal. The flesh around the pubis also caught my eye, and details such as this all help me appreciate this model even more. (And yes, the skull and lip thing does seem odd..)

Thanks JB! There is definite a kind of elegant beauty in the hadrosauriformes, and I'm really delighted to have this one from PNSO. The head was puzzling to be sure, especially when everything is near perfect of Iguanodon. Also personally wish this one was cheeked to follow the same aesthetic as the hadrosaurids so far, but I've now actually managed to overlook that 😁

Have you tried getting the British version? Though it's hard because to my knowledge it never made it to Blu-ray. That series is still the best prehistoric documentary with animals that actually look real, and it was great how they managed to cover most of the animals, dinosaurs, mammals, invertebrates, fish and so on over all their offerings. I wish there would be an updated one like that but it probably doesn't sell so well now for the cost of production to be worth it. I would have liked to watch the American version just once to hear it narrated by Captain Benjamin Sisko! And this series also spanned the amazing live show, which was sadly retired recently, but featured puppetry and animatronics that was absolutely incredible.

Thank you for your support as always! The cheek thing really does grate a little, especially when you display this next to the other excellent hadrosaurids PNSO has done! I do understand and respect that PNSO is focussed on constantly updating and improving, which is why they made this decision even though it doesn't fit the aesthetics of the others. The same way I respect that they decided to update Andrea with the new integument which I knew would polarize people. Some would love it, some would complain that it no longer fits with Wilson T Rex. Happy 2022 to you and your family too, I hope it's going to be a better one than 2020-2021!

Though I would be the first to say that there are probably many people who know way more than I 😁 I believe that these companies have access to their own consultants, who probably spot the same things I do. So I would guess that some deviations are deliberate. Either for aesthetics or other reasons. I sure would like to know how some head-scratching decisions are made behind the scenes!

I really like this figure and I'll buy it for sure, and then that head with that expression, maybe a little different from how we are used to imagining this dinosaur based on the bone remains of the skull, but, I don't know why, it reminds me of the iguanodon depicted by Burian :) I appreciate the scientific part of your review more and more. Great quality images as usual.

Well they've given the new Tsintaosaurus plenty of green already, so hopefully PNSO won't want to take a break for too long from green, a colour I personally really love on dinosaurs. Still I think most people wouldn't mind similar colours provided they have a more creative pattern design!

Thanks William! The scale detail really needs to be seen in hand to fully appreciate. PNSO has really taken things to another level. If anything it looks to me to be even finer than the Parasaurolophus.

I had an idea about the mouth line Zao Chuang in the pnso video said that it's cheekless....but... We see the mouth is closed and as you said in the triceratops video in ornithischians we don't see muscle attachments for mammal like cheeks so I was thinking if instead of cheeks we can imagine that it has simple membrane in the mouth so even if when the mouth is closed you see the mouth line, when it opens you can see the membrane covering the space A perfect example would be the model of saurian edmontosaurus annectens their model has a more simple membrane rather than true cheeks so when the mouth is closed you still see the lining Same thought goes for their newly revealed tsintaosaurus

Yes I don't see why it has to be an all-or-nothing extreme. Cheekless in the sense of not having the muscular wall, but something like a rictus that you see on birds like the flamingo would be perfectly reasonable.

I wish it was just a tiny bit bigger but apart from that I can't wait to get mine, Disney's Dinosaur introduced me to Dinosaurs when I was a kid and Aladar was my favourite so Iguanodon will always be in my top 3 lol

Wow excellent! Actually, I would have talked about Aladar except the video would be too long, and I had to also cut out a part that said that while today's top 3 are T Rex, Triceratops and Brontosaurus, when dinosaurs were first discovered the top 3 were Iguanodon, Megalosaurus and Hylaeosaurus. I'm glad that Iguanodon is still in the top 3 for you!

What a conclusion to the year! Sadly, what's with PNSO is that they always got the best lighting, pro lens, and intense photoshop applications for their promo pictures, which other brands also do, but it raises the expectation too high. You know how bad it feels to expect a PERFECT model but have THIS in hand. Anyway, I will keep buying them (can't refuse the tempt can I), just hope they stay true.

I get what you mean. It's far better to underpromise and overdeliver, than to overpromise and underdeliver. I feel it for those of you who have to pay all these other extra costs to get one PNSO, so you really have to decide carefully, and of course you want one that is as perfect as possible. One thing I can give props to CollectA and Wild Safari for, is that I don't think they create those high expectations. In fact I feel they actually can't be bothered to do that, judging from the release images of the CollectA Megalosaurus and the Safari 2021 Spinosaurus. So when you get it in hand and actually see it's better than the images, it creates a really good feeling. Have a good new year ahead! 😊

Regardless of the paint application, I will be getting this one to add to my collection. In that same vein, I will be waiting to get it because of the paint. I still need to get Domingo and Wilson. After I get those, I will most likely add Harvey to my hadrosaur herd.

I would suggest getting your favourite one first. There is a paint fall off from early runs in many model companies, PNSO included. I just bought the Pachyrhinosaurus because I love that model so much in its texture and colour, and have to say I'm disappointed by the new paint apps. Much complexity lost.

Again, another amazing review from you Sir. So, first of all, I want to thank you. Then I want to praise the beauty of this wonderful figure. I must say that I'm in love. Without any arguments, this may be the most accurate Iguanodon figure I've ever seen. But as you said the face and the mouth are the only problems I have. And of cause bigger pupils would be nice too (like in that artwork). Since I was a kid, I always considered Iguanodon as the 'COW' in dinosaurs. And I would love to take that thought a little bit further and imagine that Iguanodons ate their food just like cows. Even though you clearly pointed out how their Jaws worked, I would like to present my view to the 'Jaw mechanism' as well. I think Iguanodons and other hadrosaurids chew their food in a circular jaw motion. "The normal jaw movement of a cow when chewing is what vets call a "lateral grind" - Google. That way they could grind the tree leaves and other plants they eat. But at the same time, I know Dinosaurs didn't have a much more improved digestive system. Because in so many fossils we see dinos swallowed rocks to grind their food. And I don't think cows swallow rocks to help their digestion. They do have a much more improved Jaw and a digestion system. And the Acidic contents in their bowels are quite different from Iguanodons. So maybe they did chew in a different way, who knows. I may be wrong so I apologize. But I want to know whether that theory is accurate or not. So, if you can please share your thoughts on this good Sir. And what do you think about the PAPO Iguanodon? I think that is the second-best figure out there. Thank you so much for this valuable and informative video, Sir. Eagerly waiting for the next video, please keep up the good work. Thanks Rajitha. Never apologize with thinking broadly as that's the start of all knowledge. I can't speak definitively but I am not sure it the jaw movements would permit the same lateral grind you speak of in the cow. That said there are quite a few different ideas around. For example, the pleurokinetic model in the video shows the upper jaw laterally displacing, but I've also seen proposals where there is lateral displacement of the _lower_ jaws. As for the Papo Iguanodon, from the pictures I have seen, it generally looks ok and very Aladar-like so if you enjoyed the movie this would definitely recall that. However while extensive the texturing is very rough, and nowhere near the level of refinement we see in PNSO or even in many Wild Safaris or CollectAs. I also don't like the pronated wrists on the right arm. The tail is too short and the arms not robust enough. I actually think the CollectA Deluxe might be a better buy for accuracy and affordability. That said I have neither of these in hand so based off pictures it's not entirely fair.

Triceratops and Iguanodon, what a way to close out the year with. I am kicking myself for forgetting to mention the symmetry: Triceratops as a modern day top three (together with T Rex and Brontosaurus), and Iguanodon as the OG top three (together with Megalosaurus and Hylaeosaurus). You will be very happy with the Triceratops I think!

I think this is one that looks much better in hand. I think a large factor for that is that it's quite hard to capture the scale detail in photos, and having it up close it really does look splendid.

It's kinda obvious now, but I didn't realize that iguanodontids were only clawed on their digits I, II and III like the rest of archosaurus, something useful since I'm planing to sculpt an Iguanodon.

Lol, you mean the same way a man buys power tools for 'his wife'? 😉 Seriously though, with the educational materials that come with PNSO models, there are a lot of opportunities for education, and I think it's something that can really help one bond with kids in a wholesome way. That's why I really like what PNSO does. They could just have sold models without the educational material, for lower cost but higher volume, but they are sticking to their mission. Which of course, if we have any children in our Lives, also gives us the perfect reason to buy them! 😁? Thank you for your kind words, and Happy New Year to you and yours!

I’m sure the cheeks debate will go on but I’m not sure a Sesame Street Cookie Monster/muppet manner of eating with food flying everywhere would be of much value to these huge animals as they continue fueling what was probably a high metabolic existence. Discrepancies aside, I really like this figure and will be ordering one this week. Thank you, again, for another insightful, informative presentation.

Thank you Thomas! Yes the very complex jaw mechanics of the hadosauriformes just never really sat right with the idea of having no cheeks for me. At the very last, perhaps some kind of pseudocheek, whether muscle, skin, anything that would not waste all that grinding work. Seems amazing they could have evolved such a complex grinding mechanism, and not having other advancements in parallel to maximize that. Believe me, when you receive your Iguanodon, you will realise how much better it is in-hand when you're studying it up close and from different angles. This really is a nice end to the year for PNSO.

Thank you very much! Well I have to say that the cheekless issue does bother me more than it did in the Triceratops, particularly as it relates to its feeding mechanism. I have an attachment to the cheeked look of the Hadrosauriformes, and while I have seen reconstruction of cheekless ceratopsians, this is the first time I've seen a really good Iguanodon model without them. So I'm still not used to it. You have a happy new year too, I'll see you guys in 2022! 😁

Lol thank you Ben! I think it's a little easier when you are mad about something lol, and I really like reading articles and wondering at each new idea and discovery! Pterosaurs I don't know much about, but I would say the Azhdarchids really fascinate me. Their sheer size and majesty is amazing. In fact I was so tempted to get the M.see Quetzalcoatlus but since I have a very strict budget for myself (both money and space), I had to pass. And I would like to have _one_ good model of a Pteranodon _longiceps_ just for a representative pterosaur for myself 😁

Thanks for another great review. Fortunately, iguanodon is not included in my immediate wishes. Hopefully their promised acrocantosaurus will be devoid of controversial details. It is especially upsetting that PNSO representatives, while releasing unobvious reconstructions, do not explain their choice. In Winter Wilson's case, it helped a lot.

You're most welcome! What puzzles me is that often PNSO in their concept art have a design that we like, but then they make some decisions to change the actual model. Andrea T Rex's legs are one such example, where the sitting posture in their black and white illustration look correct but then the actual model has that hyperflexion I talked about. Still, well-known dinosaurs like Iguanodon aside, I'm always aware of how lucky I am that PNSO is doing what it's doing, and that they make choices that will polarize people no matter what choices they make. For Acrocanthosaurus, I can foresee issues with the head, the height of the neural spines, and so on. I'm really looking forward to this one however. I have yet to find an Acrocanthosaurus I like.

Hey DD! Well it didn't take long for your hopeful prediction to pan out. Unfortunately (as I'm sure you're already aware of) it won't be anything new, but closing out 2021 is PNSO's 1st(?) repaint. Nope. Not a remake like Wilson, Doyle, Er-Ma etc. A repaint of Sede the Ankylosaurus. The PNSO Ankylosaurus is a GREAT model, but I'm still disappointed in this reveal. What do YOU think?

Yikes Tha you are generous. I wouldn't even consider a repaint a new release. I thought the Sede repaint wasn't new though... haven't they released an improved version recently haven't they? Unless this is another one. From what I can tell, it's definitely improved over the dusty one I showed in Video 138 on paint applications, but it still pales (pun intended) in comparison to the original one they released which I missed. If you don't already have one, then this one would be a much better buy without having to get it repainted of course. They also have released a Pachyrhinosaurus with a new paint scheme which I'm disappointed by. I actually ordered an extra because I loved the original so much, without realising this. Oh well....

Indeed it's sad that shipping costs, taxes and middle-men add so much cost. I can understand how fro the point of view of most people, they really don't feel this would add to the Parasaurolophus. If you already have that, I think you would be very happy with that excellent representative of Hadrosauriformes!

11:39 I sure hope not, UNLESS it's E.annectens. There's already two satisfactory E.regalis models. Admittedly, I have little interest in this model, due to the high price-tag, and the Frankenstein-ian nature of the model itself. I was more excited than most when I heard PNSO were making an Iguanodon, but when I saw the Mantellisaurus-head, that excitement faded into disappointment. Especially since the body is so well done, with PNSO capturing Iggy's signature bulk so well AND it being in my preferred 1/35 scale 😫 The absence of cheeks is also strange, though not a dealbreaker for me. Could've been a perfect Iguanodon, but alas. Still, a beautiful model, despite its anatomical shortcomings, and PNSO’s only real misfire this year IMO, which when you're pumping out 20+ museum-quality models a year, is seriously impressive. And I'm still happy with the Safari Ltd model, despite being a bit small and having four clawed digits. And yet again, a fantastic review. Even though I wrote off this model the minute I saw it, I clicked on this review with haste, just to hear your opinion on it and the science behind it. Your passion and enthusiasm when speaking about models is contagious, and I just love listening to you talking about these models, even if I have no interest in them myself. Wow thank you for your comprehensive reaction! Indeed, it does seem unfortunate that this was an otherwise perfect Iguanodon, but not having that Iguanodon head was a bit of a damper. I'm sure some entreprising person will mod the head, but that's not a skill many of us have, or can afford to pay for. I actually did have the Wild Safari Iguanodon and talked about it a bit, and how unfortunately it seems to have absolutely disappeared into thin air. And as you say, it is too small and has the incorrect number of claws. However that had to be cut from the video to reduce its length. I really would like an Edmontosaurus _annectens_ as well. It seems like since that specimen was found every one and his dog wants to make one because it might be an interesting selling point. But I've really wanted one plain, boring, Anatosaurus/ Anatotitan/ Hadrosaurus etc and an _annectens_ would connect to that humble past, without that dunce cap. I suppose one could just cut off the comb off any model but it just would not be the same. Sometimes boring is cool when cool becomes common.

@@DinosDragons We were this close! If I had hands that weren't as shaky as they are, or a bit more money than I do, it'd be a pretty easy purchase. But as is, I guess it's option C, not buying it. And hey, that's money I can spend on two more standard line PNSO models, 3-6 more Safari Ltd, two EoFauna models, or a BotM Ceratopsian/Body 2 Tyrannosaur. So all is not lost :D That's it! Pre-2013, Edmontosaurus was famous for being the, as you said, "boring" crestless hadrosaur, and it's a shame that every (if any) model of Big Ed released since then has been a regalis, when it might just be sexual dimorphism, or even a patch of skin from the neck (?). And I think just cutting off the crest ~might~ not work, cause regalis has a slightly broader snout, so 🤷‍♂️ One day, one can hope. And that is true what you said, when everything's special, nothing is.

@@swaggasaurus_rex Unfortunately it's realy all about opportunity cost isn't it! You have illustrated wonderfully why I hope PNSO can somehow minimize cost for the Western consumer, or they will start to lose ground. When one model, no matter how amazing, could be exchanged for 3 or more Safari, many of which are sculpted very well, and have a little leftover besides for paying for repaints, it can be a very hard decision to make. I'm still hoping someone will make a decent 1:35 Edmontosaurus _annectens_ just for the pleasure of seeing one of the key dinosaurs I read about as a kid in updated form. But let's just see what happens in the line up next year. Oh actually I should say _this_ year now. Happy New Year!

@@DinosDragons Exactly. Or at least justify the price hike for the Dinosaur Museum models. Right now, all they have is the weight that the names of the animals hold, and a couple of pieces of paper. The Trike came with a skull so that's promising. Otherwise, in terms of sculpt and paint, they're pretty much the same. They could try more vinyl models. I for one don't mind seam-lines, but I understand most people do. Still, I'll always be a sucker for their models so 🤷‍♂️ Likewise. Wilson is hungry and Doyle is a hassle to prepare, so to speak. Jokes aside, I agree with you, it'd be nice to have a crestless hadrosaur for once. If they do, I hope they also do a Maiasaura later on, such an important dinosaur, yet so scarce in this hobby. Likewise, I can't wait to see what PNSO reveals this year, I know I'll be skipping a few meals this year 😁 And to you, as well! Hope you have a good one.

Ornithischians dinosaurs had cheeks. For me its not a debate at all. Yes Reptiles(Sauropsids) don't have facial muscles but that does not alter the general need for a ''cheek'' structure to exist in order to keep food in the mouth. Polacanthus fossilized head has osteoderms in the area where cheeks mast have been present. Ornithischians may not have had fleshy muscular cheeks like mammals do but they definitely had at least a piece of skin in that area.

I agree! I too find it hard to believe that a system exists such that half the food falls off. We have evidence of buccal osteoderms in ankylosaurs as well, so it makes sense that something, let's call it a 'pseudocheek' exists. The only question is to what extent. The Nabavizadeh reconstruction of the ceratopsian pseudocheek looks reasonable because much of the oral margin would still be covered. The hardrosaur one starts to look iffy, especially considering the complex jaw mechanics that evolved would have really wasted a lot of energy processing the bolus with half of it lost!

@@DinosDragons Speaking of cheeks and "skin flaps" on the sides of mouths, it is interesting to note that condors have these extension of skin "flaps" on their beaks. remember that condors do not chew, nor do they use their beaks as heavily as some other predatory birds.

Sadly, I dont think that would happen, even though I dont mind having a perfect Iguanodon. This is one dinosaur that seems to keep eluding me in terms of having one near perfect version. Seems strange to me though, they created a near perfect body so obviously a lot of research went into this.

As the others said, assuming you're in the US, try Dan's Dinosaurs or Amazon. I've ordered from both so I know they're reliable. I haven't ordered models from AliExpress though, so maybe you could ask them their experiences, which sellers are reliable, etc. Good luck!

It's Carnotaurus, though my favourite group are the sauropods! It's really hard to say at times, though. I _can_ tell you that besides the abelisaurids, and individual genera, as a group I actually am least interested in the theropods 😁

Model is cool but paint job is ppff I think I could pay $40 for something like this. Pnso are putting all in Museum packages just to get more money, and I don't give a S**t about the package, I WANT BEAUTIFUL FIGURES😬‼️

To be fair, PNSO started out with a mission to educate, and reach children in this mission, so while adult collectors have fallen in love with them, they are not what PNSO is focussed on. I actually respect them for this, as I fully support products designed to get children involved. Where the real problem is, is in the shipping costs, the taxes, the middle-men, and all the other crap that add to the cost. It's really irritating, but it's something I haveto accept. I don't know which country you're in, but for the Beasts of the Mesozoic, for example, after paying the shipping and so on, I am paying about 20-30% more than people in the States.

Actually according to Paleonerd blog, it does follow a specific specimen of an Iguanodon head. But I still prefer a model to be representative, especially if we have enough of the dinosaur remains!

I can definitely see how if this is your favourite herbivore, then it would be disappointing. People who really love a dinosaur tend to know it really well and have a good concept of what it looks liks especially if it has good fossil remains. Perhaps you could have a look at the CollectA deluxe one, if you can overlook some of the errors and lack of detail.
