Do you know all of the effects estrogen plays in our lovely bodies?
Estrogen is not just a hormone for reproduction - it’s a hormone for health. Estrogen helps protect our bones, helps us build muscle, protects our brain from dementia and cognitive decline, lowers our risk of cardiovascular disease, and so much more.
Yet, many women FEAR hormones due to the many misconceptions and misconstrued data.
This week, I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Felice Gersh on the podcast to discuss the importance of estrogen and other hormones during perimenopause and beyond. Dr. Gersh breaks down the myths and misconceptions surrounding hormones and so much more.
Dr. Gersh has degrees from Princeton University and from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, and she holds dual Board Certification in OB/GYN (obstetrics and gynecology) and Integrative Medicine. Dr. Gersh is also a prolific lecturer with multiple published articles in medical journals to her name and is the best-selling author of PCOS SOS and the PCOS SOS Fertility Fast Track. Her book Menopause: 50 Things You Need to Know, was ranked the #1 menopause book by Good Housekeeping Magazine.
Dr. Gersh takes us on a deep dive into what women experience during perimenopause including the various symptoms and how we could better navigate this big transition time for women.
Tune in this week to uncover the truth about estrogen, it’s role in our health, and how to navigate a very important time in a woman’s life to have greater health. She shares essential knowledge that every woman should be educated about as they navigate menopause.
What You’ll Learn in this Episode:
What happens to our bodies during perimenopause.
Why estrogen is essential for health, fertility, and every aspect of well-being.
The repercussions of the loss of vital life hormones.
The connection between estrogen and immune cells.
The difference between synthetic and bioidentical hormones.
How studies on hormones were conducted and how they shaped our current conception of hormones, along with their impact on women’s health.

Wow! Amazing information! Thank you. Brilliant woman. No one ever taught us that estrogen is this important and that there are receptors in the whole body! And it's responsible for so many important processes and functions within the body. My mind is blown, in a good way. The lack of studies for and on Women is disgraceful! This is pure unconscious misogyny, As complex and unique as our physiology is, wow. Profoundly disturbing. But SO grateful to find Dr. Gersh and your channel. Thank you! 😃🙏♀️💜

I'm thankful that there's so much good information out there on women's change of life right now! I suffered for the last 3 years with many symptoms, anxiety, insomnia, heart palpitations, hair falling out, dry EVERYTHING. Finally, at age 45 I've found a provider who is willing to treat during Perimenopause. I'm on the estradiol patch and oral progesterone and it's been life changing! I'm also happy to get the jump on these failing hormones and preventing heart disease, brain disease, and bone loss!

I’ve decided to pay out of pocket to consult with Dr. Gersh’s PA, via telehealth, because I’m tired of butting my head against the fossilized “health care” system. It’s a shame we have to pay cash for real health care.

I wish we could get some practical info on HRT during perimenopause- when should we start estrogen? How much and at what frequency? If Dr Gersh has shared this anywhere, would someone please point me there?

Would love to know Dr. Gersh’s thoughts on what optimal estradiol levels would be for menopausal women? I’ve heard 75-100 & some suggest higher 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dr.Gersh, I’m on Estradiol patches, was applying estrogen face cream on my face & neck, had blood work done & my estradiol level was 58.4 from March to May 2024….mynipples began feeling very tender so assuming I was getting too much estrogen. I would love your opinion please……would too much progesterone make nipples very tender also?

My hormones are red normal to Optimal levels during the cycle protocol and I still feel depression and anxiety though I have a T3 that is low could that be the cause of the depression anxiety
@hiya1399

Yes. Low Free T3 levels can cause low mood and increase in anxiety. You want your Free T3 to be mid-range or higher.

Does that mean we should stay on birth control instead of switching to HRT ?
@charleedell92
@charleedell92 4 ай бұрын
Just n=1 here but I will stay on the combined pill (which I take continuously) until around 53 when I can reasonably assume no further ovulation. I am taking it for ovarian cancer risk reduction as well as other health benefits, not contraception. It also means I get to completely bypass the rollercoaster of perimenopause. After that I will go straight on cyclical HRT.

@@charleedell92 thank you for sharing!!! Subjectively I feel better on HRT but I worry the estrogen is t high enough to protect me from those dementia heat disease risks etc I wonder if HRT dose is enough >
@KateHarris9791

I've heard the opposite. That birth control is not our friend as it inhibits our ability to ovulate and make progesterone (which is what protects our body.) BC is suppressing hormones. HRT is boosting insufficient hormones through non-synthetic agents. Read Lara Briden's book The Period Repair Manual for great info on this (it's an easy read.) All the speakers on HRT recommend starting sooner rather than later.

@@Aki-wq6xh It should be enough. And as time goes on you can increase. There is a video where birth control pills and HRT are explained in greater detail. Seems HRT is the way to go so dosing can be controlled

She says no to birth control pills for hormone replacement. They aren't the same as bioidentical and she said no to oral estrogen. Topical is what she mentioned
