In this video I do my best to explain how a lamb can sell for such a big price. This is a very elite group at the top of this breed that can spend this much on these rams and most farmers will never get near these prices.
I hope I explain it well enough but i'll let you guys be the judge of that.

ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZfaq and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

@@TheSheepGame Watched the £125k ram lamb video on Facebook, and thought it was some crazy one off selling that high! Is 50k avarage for these rams? At Welsh mountain ram sales, £600 to £3000 would be avarage, think the highest a Welsh ram has sold for is £40k - £50k ish.

A few more questions about high-priced rams: are these tups planned for farmers specializing in purebred sheep, or for market lambs? From what I’ve seen and read, it seems these Blackface rams might be taken to ewes with an eye on producing even more future expensive tups and developing the best characteristics of the breed, within the flocks of the farmers who purchased them. The sheep on your farm, on the other hand, are for producing market lambs for the food chain, and are a combination of several breeds suited for your land and conditions.

It quite often used to be a case and still is a bit around here of farmer/group of farmers A buys off farmer/group of farmers B, B buys off C and C buys off A. Doing so means a significant part of the money is never actually spent, it just gets moved around and all 3 farmers/groups of farmers then get to sell their lambs with the selling point of being by a very expensive tup.
@gingerbaker4579
@gingerbaker4579 2 жыл бұрын
Do try and pay attention. The farmers aren't buying off each other, they went into a joint venture for the ram. That means no money is been moved around they're splitting the costs by a three way.

Do you think it was because his back was longer and the other was more compact? What does the breed standard say? Do you think you could get us an interview with the market judge so he can tell us why he chose the ram he chose as best ram at that market? Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷

I love your videos and the information. Quality stock results in quality breeding. Quality breeding results in a quality product that sells for a premium price. A higher income allows you to purchase batter quality stock. Rinse and repeat Its the same in poultry. This year I'll spend about $150 on 6 duckling and 6 chicks , not including shipping. The ducklings will improve my current stock and the chicks are a new breed to diversify my chickens and offer a different product.

A guy who sells a £100k ram lamb has a flock with excellent genetics; and he needs to keep bringing in new rams from other lines to avoid inbreeding. He has to pay for that, but he’s selling £100k lambs and syndicating the new rams to cut the costs. It’s good business. Build a top quality flock and you’ll be able to sell breeding stock. All agriculture works on this, animal and plant. Y’all know what a combine cost to buy and maintain? That ram is not a bad price.

Well, ok I get it. If you are looking to breed an elite level flock capable of throwing another ram like this - yes. It is worth the money. But to get the flock up to close to the level of the ram will take patience, a lot of patience, demanding standards and culling of any ewe that can't make the cut. The amount of years or decades in breeding up to that level depends on where you started. If you have an elite ram to help the process it will take much less time. So if your flock is already well above average - such a ram can help you start producing some amazing lambs that will become your foundation for that elite flock of ewes. The work of a generation of humans, I would think, depending on how deep are your pockets.

Wondering how much AI and embryo transfer is done at the high dollar breeding farms? I have an old friend that breeds high dollar Boer show goats here in the US. She does a lot of embryo transfer and AI on her top Bucks making her even more $bucks$.

Did I miss a video? Perhaps I'm just a bit touched, but I don't think I've heard exactly what a breeder looks at. Did you show one that explains it? For instance, is it because the ram holds his head up in a certain way, or the way he moves in the ring? What separates the five-figure sheep from the fours? I'm sad that the season is over and I won't have your videos to keep me informed. By the time it starts again, your little one should already be confidently be calling you papa!

This is what I would like to know as well. What is it about the sheep themselves that farmers are looking for?

They will take semen from him and split 3 ways. Then one of them will use him naturally.

I have no doubt that we've run the price up and have to pay for it between 2 or 3 but the next time comes to auction and it is bears they can make that money back Tim fold. ESSENTIALLY spend big money to make money HANDS over fists.

Are these sheep used for wool or the lambs used for food ? Thanks for explaining the cost but 50,000 is still a lot of money !
