A quick comparison of an antique 1796 light cavalry sabre with a modified modern Cold Steel version and another German antique - with the same blade shape, hilt and scabbard, but a 3 bar guard.
I currently have a rather ugly screw in place of a peened pin in the hilt of the CS sabre. This is just a place-holder till I make a nicer alternative.

The 1796 sabre is think in the foible to help reduce resistance while cutting through opponents; it's less likely to get stuck.

Hi Drunkduck, what model is that German Dragoon saber w the 3-bar hilt and 1796 hilt and scabbard? Thanks. Could it be a modification of the 1811 or a pre-1811? But the scabbard does not have the triangular drag of the 1811.

Hi Charles. I'm really not sure. I've tried to research it and seen no documentation. You do see other examples of this pattern show up from time to time though. The blade is a little heavier and sturdier than a typical 1796, maybe even than an 1811.

The scabbard of your German Dragoon saber w 3 bar hilt is that of a 1796 scabbard

My thoughts too. The antique firearms dealer I bought that sword from described it as a "German dragoon sabre", but it could even be an experimental 1796... The scabbard could also have been matched with it later. Though I hear the original "Blucher sabres" were simply 1796 LC sabres that had been imported, same scabbards and all.

The british imported about 10,000 Pattern 1796 for use by the Prussians and they liked them so much they developed the 1811 Blucher, although I cannot be sure that the imported ones were correctly called Blucher. The "drag " of the Blucher scabbard is much more substantial then the original 1796. The weight and thickness of the two are different, with the Blucher being thicker and heavier. U can try measuring these two dimensions. The 3 bar guard could be a rehilt.

The sword I show in the video as an original 1796 LC was sold to me as such by a reputable antique dealer at auction, but I now believe that to be an 1811 Blucher. The Cold steel sabre is closer to the German versions in weight and sturdiness. The "dragoon sabre" is even a bit tougher built than a normal 1796, though it has a similar blade shape. I don't think it's a re-hilt. -Since the video I've handled a lot of different antique Trooper and officer 1796 sabres and I've acquired an officer version and a few infantry officer models as well, so it's given me a different perspective. I'll definitely do another video.

I have seen antique dealers confuse 1796 with 1811. The 1796 that you show has a well formed "P" guard and a curved quillon, more suggestive of an 1811 than a 1796

whats the difference in distal tapers on the cold steel compared to the original?

That sword in the video that I saw is a 1796 LC was sold to me as one by an antique dealer but I think it's a Blucher. I have quite a few more original British versions now though. The distal taper of the Cold Steel blade better matches the German versions of the 1796 LC: they're stronger and beefier, with thicker spines. The original British versions are lighter and a little thinner. Personally, I think the beefiness is justified- the original British 1796 LC is not as durable. They weren't supposed to be. Whereas the Cold Steel version can stand up to quite a bit more rough and tumble, which is what you want it for, while not being dissimilar from antique German blades.

Prepper Z Oh it is. Certainly. I've just modified the hilt heavily. The blade, hilt ring, washer, pomel nut, and scabbard are still original unmodified Cold Steel.

Drunkduck Awesome ! What do you think of new Thompson Saber ? I have light cavalry saber and I am looking for one more.

Prepper Z The Thompson sabre looks great! If it had a polished steel finish I'd snap it up. It looks historical and seems to be pretty functional too. This guy has a review: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdR2e7uCm8ibqZc.html
