Experimental Archaeology!
In times past, the saber was as critical a weapon on the battlefield as the cavalry itself. 17th, 18th, & even 19th century manuscripts led to me training my horse (and myself) to our new saber.
17th & 18th Century #Horsemanship
*Also, included is some 20th Horsemanship education, as I turned to Lt. George S. Patton's work (the very same who would become the world renowned General of WWII) published for the army in 1914.

Good video! I enjoyed her getting her horse used to the sounds of the saber. It reminds my what my Dad told me, he was in the Third Mounted Cavalry at Fort Myers VA. He said they would get green horses (untrained horses) once you were able to mount and ride them a little they would line up on one end of the parade grounds and start at a walk then to a trot and then to a full charge across the field and the Sargent would call draw sabers. My dad said once they started drawing the sabers and the sound of the metal saber and metal scabbard banging together, and the rodeo would start. He said horses were bucking and men would be flying.

Just realized these things are super long, which makes total sense of course as you're on horseback. Reminds me of the good 'ol "spatha"!

Lots of thins you have to consider when you use a horse for warfare, its incredible how we used them in battle.

This is a fact that most don't know. Present in every Civil War camp and on every battlefield, horses suffered and died in numbers that rivaled even the Civil War's high rate of human devastation. An estimated 1,500,000 horses and mules were wounded and killed, or died of disease in the war, as compared with 970,000 military casualties.

Exactly. A soldier’s life was hard (a horse was also a soldier). There’s a reason Washington privately purchased as many army horses who were injured (particularly mares) as he could to save them from their hard life. He then had them brought to Mount Vernon where they lived out their lives in paradise. Suffering was an expected part of life, but Washington’s actions prove there can be heroism in spite if it.

The cantaloupe slice is done AFTER the horse has gone past the melon; so the blade is DECELERATING as it travels backwards while the horse is galloping forwards. This defeats the purpose of attacking while being mounted atop a charging horse.

Damm I really love this content, thanks for posting and sharing this type of knowledge, youd be surprised how many large HEMA and fencing channels would love this type of work, particularly how you include primary sources. One question tho, do you need to limit the movement of your hips during the cut as so not to confuse the horse? I ask this because he might understand that you want him to perfom a turn you see. Tnks for the video and sry for the Englis. Great channel, love you guys work.

Would really recommend getting some kind of grinding wheel to sharpen it. If it's really an old sword then a sandstone wheel will do. However if it's a replica in hardened steel, you will need a carborondum wheel, a modern one basically. Simply because the hardened steel is well... Too hard for the sandstone, so the sharpening will take ages. I personally prefer ones that do use water, as they won't produce dust that way, won't overheat the blade and will give a slightly sharper blade too. I'm speaking out of experience here... I was stubborn and tried to sharpen new tools on and old stone, big nope.

Very informative. Showcase the most important Napoleonic cavalry skill: opening a bottle of champagne with a saber. It was the only thing I was good at.

Really cool video. Me and one of my horses have started jousting and using various weapons on horse back like arming sword and spear in addition to the jousting lance. I’ve been wanting to learn the techniques my great-great grandfather might have learned as a cavalry trooper in the civil war, who made your saber and where did you buy it? Thanks in advance, have a great day.

Yes, it’s strange how far away I felt from her when I was actually doing it, and how close we looked on camera (when we were on the ground). This was simulating the movement we’re to do with a chambiere (or stick and string). But for that reason I am in no hurry to sharpen this sword 😅

It's not just dulling the blade, it's driving the hilt assembly off the tang. Put a 5mm leather or felt gasket up against the front of the guard around the ricasso to cushion it. Are there wooden liners in the scabbard?

Sure do! Here's a good intro by my friend Maxime Chouinard (fencing master extraordinaire) : hemamisfits.com/2021/04/25/living-off-the-sword-under-napoleon-a-history-of-the-fencing-masters-of-the-grand-army/ Also read this: hemamisfits.com/2015/08/02/treatise-on-the-counter-point-by-alexandre-valville-1817/ See George S. Patton: "Saber Exercise 1914 Training Manual in Swordsmanship." (written when he was just a Lt.) The majority of my sources are in French, which if you cannot read can be translated online (albeit roughly). I can recommend Reverso Translation. Probably the most complete sabre on horseback text is "Théorie sur l'escrime a cheval, pour se défendre aux aventage contre toute espèce d'armes blanches" "Theory on fencing on horseback, to defend oneself against all kinds of weapons" Another great is this work: "Dissertation sur l'Equitation et le Maniement des Armes à Cheval" or "Dissertation in Equitation and Handling of Arms at Horsemanship" and I have several more. I assume the saber is a replica? In my experience the originals tend to handle dramatically better; the replicas tend to be more tip-heavy which is hard on the arms and wrist. I highly recommend finding a sturdy original and waving that around.
@KateFergeson

Yep, an 1860 army repro. I’m on the hunt for an original ;) I’ve used one and it is easier to wield. Indeed though, this one is good for practice. The extra weight helps build muscle memory (and if it gets damaged it’s no heartbreak).

@@KateFergeson Oh yeah, the antique ones do require a bit more care, for sure. The US 1840 and 1860 were both based in the French M1822, and they look quite similar, so if that distinction is important to you be sure to look into the differences before you go hunting for one.

Absolutely! Thanks for the tidbit. What I really want to get my hands on is a hussar saber. I may spend the extra buck to get one that comes from well made, solid materials so it won’t break when I utilize it (because my sabers are not ornaments, their is a high risk I might damage one). Cheers!

@@KateFergeson Hussar sabers are cool. They can get expensive though. With that in mind, some more unsolicited tips (I've been burned and it still stings): With antiques, be aware that the more expensive, rare and popular the type of sword, the more fakery there is, and with swords there is unfortunately a lot of fakery. The only thing that can really help with that is experience (both looking at lots of antiques and lots of replicas that are out there) - or a very reliable vendor or a friend that can lend you theirs. Also if you want to wave it around, be sure to ask the vendor about any movement in the grip; lots of hilts get loose with age, because either they have leather washers that run into the grip for friction that disintegrate over time, or because they are secured by various glues that dry out and turn to dust. Also, if you get one from an auction house: The quality of their expertise varies a lot, so don't rely on them too much. And beware of auction fees (often >25%) and exorbitant packing and shipping costs.

Not gonna lie, if I was an enemy cavalryman and I realized my enemy was a woman, I would punish her for being a woman by constantly aiming for her boobs. If they're large enough, they'll be a liability in combat and a protruding target.
