This is actually incorrect, and is a very common "Geography Fact That People Get WRONG". The ACT and Jarvis Bay Territory are separate entities and were never unified.

The English island name is New Guinea, but kudos to Toycat for calling it by just its native name Papua at 16:19! And not only were Australia and PNG part of the same empire, but Papua New Guinea was once a part of Australia itself! Started as a Queensland dependency in 1883, then became a British protectorate in 1884, British colony in 1888, and finally an Australia external territory in 1902 and stayed that way until 1975. When the formerly German northern half fell in 1919, it became its own territory called the Territory of New Guinea and they ended up combining the territories of Papua and New Guinea as one territory in 1949. Hence the name of the nation. The reason Australia has a big seven-pointed star below the Union Jack called the Commonwealth Star is originally because of Papua, and to represent any other future territories.

Rio de Janeiro first became a colonial capital of Brazil in 1763, and was the capital of independent Brazil from 1822 until 1960, where it became a Federal District just like Brasília is today. By putting Brasília in a central location, the goal was to unite the Brazilian people and promote economic development in the more central states. Rio's former Federal District became Guanabara state in 1960, and it finally merged with the city/State of Rio de Janeiro surrounding it in 1975. Ankara on the other hand became the capital because that was the center of Atatürk's resistance against the Ottomans and the invading Greeks. Another fact that depends on how you measure it is the world's longest/largest river. The Nile is the longest at 4,258 miles but by volume, it's the Amazon at over 200,000 cubic meters per second. Some Brazilian scientists have also claimed the Amazon is longer by length, but many dispute this because there's a debate of exactly where is the source of the Amazon.

South Africa actually has THREE capitals: Cape Town (the legislative one where the parliament meets), Bloemfontein (the judicial one where the Supreme Court is) and Pretoria (the administrative one where the executive government meets and all the embassies are)

In 2008 Quebec City celebrated its 400th anniversary of founding (1608-2008) and from Christmas when it became apparent that it would be a very snowy winter, there was an anniversary snow-o-meter all over the media. The dream was to reach 400 cm for 400 years. The focus of the population was so intense that the city broke its all time record and the bar eventually passed the 500 cm mark that year. Glad I was there to witness it. Amazing city, especially in the winter.

Another misconception: Many believe NYC is the capital of New York...it's not, it's Albany (some people also believe NYC is the nation's capital...which is partly true as it was the nation's first capital in 1785). The location of what's now Albany started as Fort Nassau in 1614 by the Dutch, and then the village of Beverwijck in 1652. King Charles II renamed it Albany after his brother James, the Duke of York and Albany. A charter for the City of Albany was granted on July 22, 1686. This charter still governs the city, making this the oldest charter still used in the US. Though when NY got its independence, Albany didn't become the capital until 1797, and Kingston (also Upstate) was the first capital where the first NY State Senate was established. Funny for you to mention Brasília since Albany's capitol grounds were inspired by Brasília's Monumental Axis, calling it Empire State Plaza. It's Albany's skyline and it's just...why? They stick out like a sore thumb. They really saw what Brasília did with their government buildings and were like "Wow, this is the greatest capital ever designed, let's copy it!"...and ended up displacing thousands

DC, Ottawa, and Canberra were decided on because they were in the middle or the major population centers at that time. They also bridged cultural gaps (North Vs South in America or French Vs English speakers in Canada). Ankara and Brasilia are the Capitol because they are geographically centrally located in their country

Actually the tallest mountain in the world from base to summit that is completely above sea level is Denali in alaska, which is a much more imposing and vertical rise over its far lower surrounding landscapes than any mountain in the Himalayas including Everest

I measured France (New Caledonia) has a city (Goauro) that is closer to Sidney (1958 km) than any city of New Zealand. New Zealand has the Three Kings Islands (no city there), and only that's why NZ is closer to Sidney than France.

(2:15) You can't say that 57 °C is almost three times of 20 °C because that's not how it works. 0 °C isn't the zero point. You have to convert it to kelvin, so that's 330 and 293, and now we can see that the record is almost 13 % higher than what the temperature was when you looked at it. 57 °C is almost 13 % hotter than 20 °C, because that's just how temperatures work. The same is true for 135 °F to 68 °F, which is also almost 13 % hotter. You must measure from the actual zero point.

Ottawa was not chosen because it is more inland, it was instead a compromise between the French and the English as it stands in pretty much equal distance between Toronto and Quebec City; this is further demonstrated by the fact that Ottawa itself is split between the province of Ontario and Quebec, Kansas City style. In fact, Ottawa is not even more inland, as it literally stands on the St. Lawrence River, which was a deliberate move, as having a capital of a (then) remote colony be hard to reach via waterways would be a bad idea. All four of Eastern Canada's major cities, and the center of Canada before the westward expansion, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City, are on the St. Lawrence, it was an important trade route and where boats docked as the actual East coast of Canada has shallow beaches and tough weathers, hence why today places like Newfoundland and Labrador is nearly empty and the shorelines are only hosts to small fishing villages. the central artery of Eastern Canada has always been the St. Lawrence

Except Toronto is over 80 miles from America and Ottawa is under 60. Vancouver is 32, Montreal 46, Winnipeg 68, Regina 101, Calgary 168, Halifax 330, Edmonton 348. Ottawa is not far from America. They made it the capital because it was in between Upper and Lower Canada and could keep them united.

Ottowa is the state capitol of Canada, Because Canada is a State. As in, how the dictionary defines the word. Technically, the United Nations is NOT a group of nations, but States. EXCEPT someone already trademarked the name United States. So now people are left misunderstanding the words. And Technically, the United States is NOT a group of States, but Provinces - but that word is lame, and plus we want to keep Texas from getting any funny ideas. A nation is a cultural and language grouping. There are Four distinct Nations in the State of Switzerland (French Swiss, German Swiss, Italian Swiss, and the other one.)

(13:55) Misconception: Australia (continent) and Australia (country) are the same. They are not. The statement "Australia is a country and a continent" is misleading, and only true in the sense of the usage of the word. Australia (country) isn't the same as Australia (continent) in the same way that Ireland (country) isn't the same as Ireland (island) ... but the future might change this.

My geography class memories are a bit fuzzy, but I seem to recall that we where taught that Oceania is a continent that includes a whole host of island groups like Micronesia etc... Basically most of the small island states in the Pacific. However I don't recall if Hawaii was considered a part of Oceania or North America in our system... I suspect the later? Our concept of continents is clearly more tied to geopolitics, culture and history then just physical landmasses...

When folks talk about Canada not always being a snow covered wasteland (!) I never see the example of the southern Okanagan Valley semi-arid ecozone, (see the wiki article "Okanagan Desert"), which has sand dunes and cacti. Not what people think when they think of Canadian landscapes.

Australia (the contient) also includes Papa New Guniea, so the argument that it is a continent and therefore cannot be a island, doesn't hold up in comparison to any other continent. So it is an island, just not the biggest.
