18. How We Got iPhone 15 to Look Like an 8K Cinema Camera

What is a cinema camera? In terms of specifications, most professionals shoot ProRes 4K in 10bit log to an SSD. Since iPhone 15 now now has those specs, I wonder how far the iPhone 15 can go simply treating it like any other ProRes 10bit cinema camera? With the right talent, the right equipment, and the right software, we think we can inch smartphones a little closer to the cinematic arena. If you want to be a filmmaker, shooting a movie on an iPhone should not be your end goal - but if a smartphone is all you have access to, it’s a great place to start. One of the best aspects of democratization is that it enables individuals who lack resources to access higher-quality tools. In this episode, we compare the iPhone 15 cinema mode to the RED Monstro by rigging out the iPhone as a cinema camera and using an A.I. post-production pipeline to get the image looking as close as possible (hint: you might be more impressed than you’d like to be by the results.)

I work for an agency that has a ton of 9:16 content for our client social media accounts. Because of that, I started shooting on the iPhone 15 Pro Max because I was feeling so tired at the end of the day with my vertical mounts and heavy rigs, it made no sense. I've been having a PHENOMENAL time using the Blackmagic App recording to an SSD that I have in a MagSafe wallet so it's all contained easily. It's in a PolarPro case where I can use all my ND and polarizer filters. The stabilization in the Blackmagic App, is almost good enough to keep the gimbal at home depending on your camera moves. An added benefit of using a depth map would completely change the game once again. What I'm doing now, no one can tell it's an iPhone. Using Strada in the future and utilizing depth maps....well come on! A dream!

Cheers to some of your points about camera accessibility and enabling people to have a tool to learn on. Also your reference to the Sony PD 150 and all the cameras in that space. Crazy to think an iPhone has so much more resolution that magically Sony back in the day.😂

At first I wondered why this video is so staggeringly better than any other content I've seen on KZfaq. It's as if an actual filmmaker and not a content creator was making it. I thought I recognized the face and then I realized it's Michael Cioni and his team. It IS an actual filmmaker using filmmaking techniques and not KZfaq tropes to tell his story. I've had the pleasure of meeting Michael and his team at the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro user group and Cine Gear. Great, talented, smart people pushing the industry forward to a future it didn't know it needed. Thank you Michael and team not just for this channel but all you guys are doing. Now if you could just reimagine the slate for the 21st century...

Yeah a cinema camera is basically just a brain. It needs a whole production and post production crew to get a really high end, cinematic look (not to mention an extrmely expensive lens. Some cost as much as a new car). But you need a good sensor and image processor in the first place, so the iphone is still impressive.

ye but you know, something less could also be to not do all of this stuff showcased in the video, but instead just buy a used zv-e10 for 250$ and probably take another 800$ to buy some lenses, a gimbal and a monitor. You will be much more cheap then an iphone 15 pro, and it will you 100000x better results instead. I dont really see the point this video wants to set, if you take everyhting you can, get vfx artists, use AI and stuff, then you can also make an iphone 11 look cinematic if you know what i mean

This is actually insane. Due to the minimal focal length of the iPhone it will allow for better post production where you can choose your focal length in post instead of live on set. Especially if you would use a Lidar sensor to create the 3D map of your image, you would easily be able to identify close or far objects and based on this would be able to adjust a cinematic-like blur to the iPhone image

Okay, wow. It's not often I actually get so intrigued and riveted by a video about something like this, but this was honestly fascinating. I've played around a lot with my 14 Pro's cinema mode and always thought it really remarkable what it's able to do in just software in combo with the LiDAR, so I was quite curious about this video. Admittedly I was not expecting such a well polished, well explained, and wonderfully put together video with excellent samples to showcase. Bra-frikkin-vo! (except now I wish i had a 15 pro for USB-C, hah!) Kudos from a 20+ year industry vet in camera dept! Great video, and I think you've found an ideal product to kick off with. I suspect for the moment, most filmmakers who can afford a set, crew, cinematographer and lighting are going to find money for a pro camera too, but smaller productions could definitely go for this. Pretty sure the reason the iPhone 15 Pro Log is so good (and it's not just Log, but without oversharpening and tone mapping) is that Vincent Laforet (who's been at Apple for a few years now) has finally been able to get the message through. He was in the Apple demo room in Apple Park as part of the FCP Creative Summit last November, which was wild.

You're right. So many companies used to put sharpening in their cameras - which iPhone has in several modes - but log ProRes is really clean and smooth as you say. Vincent and his team are doing so much right over there. I'm glad we were able to push it so far.

The white paper (which again, is such a huge and amazing thing actually publishing their transfer function and gamut), says that the point of Apple Log is for it to have minimal processing. I love that we can do our own tone mapping. Totally agree that for a big production its not so much the sensor, its the reliability, you would hate to lose a scene because an ssd got unplugged in the middle of a shoot, or the camera overheated. But for people starting out, who are learning, it makes so much sense, because you don't have the pressure of hiring tens of thousands of dollars worth of people's time. I think the iPhone 15 Pro is the best camera to learn on.

Make the app! You will do well. I travel all over the world and need a small rig. This is a great example of if you have the right lighting, you can make it look just as good for the untrained eye in which is 95% of the people out there. Telling the story, now that’s a different subject all in itself.

If you travel all over the world just get an fx30, man. It's gonna require the same amount of bits and bobs to put a working rig together. Even less than this, actually.

There are many things I’d like to say. First, depth of field is the only thing I like about small sensors - actually when shooting with fX3 I try to shoot with closer aperture if possible . I think that’s a very interesting experiment . Of course, we are talking in the video about more than 10,000 dollars of equipment , which means that in reality you could buy a camera and lens and make it with more ease , but the proof of concept is very nice :-)

My major problem with the iPhone was not the features it included, rather the whole compatibility with the ecosystems that I am using, and TypeC has drastically changed this. Previously to even consider using iPhone as a viable option you had to buy multiple adapters which would total to the cost of just buying a brand new iPhone in the process. But now using the Blackmagic camera hooked into an SSD has made this such a dream to work with. I’ve done a few shots for our company and I never tell them what I use to see if they can tell the difference. You’d be surprised the dumbfounded look when you tell them the ip15 can compete with a mirrorless camera. Cheers for this and I wish your channel much success, but you probably wont need it given how much production quality and information goes into it to make this a stellar success

You're making a great point. And I have some new info that you might like: in our next Episode (EP 23) we did exactly as you said and took the iPhone "standard" or "off the shelf" accessories and tried to use them and shared the pricing. That comes out on March 19th. I think you'll get a lot from it and it addressees some of the points you made. Thanks for the comment!

That was brilliant! I've sold my Blackmagic 6K pro and lens and gone all in on apple 15 Pro Max and believe it or not, a Google pixel 7a for commercial use. The results are outstanding and production time is slashed.

@Mr_Kenneth

Hi there, I shot a window shutters commercial on the Pixel 7a. I just lit the set and used a lot of dolly tracking and push zooms at 60fps. I then stabilised the footage in Premiere. The 7a didn't have log just H265 but the results were excellent. At that point, and the type of commercials my clients wanted, I knew the Black magic camera was too bulky and overkill. I purchased the iPhone 15 Pro Max with the 512gb and the Brandon Li case and productibity went through the roof. I also did a 2 week product photoshoot in RAW with the iPhone and again, it blew away any misconceptions of what a smart phone can do.

Tbh as a cinematographer myself I don’t consider shallow depth of field as crucial to a cinematic image. Only separation between foreground and background which can be done on the iPhone with its subtle depth of field or through lighting and composition. This is because some of the most beautiful films of the past where shot on apsc sized film stock at f5.6 which is quite deep to me It’s just had to be a stylistic choice
@vlcthefish
@vlcthefish 4 ай бұрын
Infact one of the obvious signs of a low end budget production is the overuse of shooting with thin DOF(usually to cover up for the lack of set and lights). Using large format is more than just a DOF thing.
@theslimbin
@theslimbin 4 ай бұрын
@@vlcthefish absolutely! Having shallow depth of field is a resent trend. In the past most cinematographers were chasing a sharp image above most things especially because you didn’t have a live high res image that you could instantly watch back to see if you missed focus or if the lens was sharp wide open (a more than you thing where almost unusable at anything under 2.8). And let’s not forget fluctuations in the gate, the focus could shift very slightly with every frame as the film moved through the camera, despite all the calibration, so at f1.4 you could sometimes see focus shift the smallest amount on static shots.

I completely agree. So much of the look is dependent on the grade and lighting, and the IPhone with only the grade and without the mapping looked really good.

I truly loved this video. Very Indepth and educational. I have been shooting video since the Canon XL1 , and when your talking professional use, it all matters on what you are shooting. If I am shooting a training video, the standards are not as critical as shooting a video for Netflix. The Iphone and the accessories that are made to make shooting video easier, cost efficient and more practical has many positives, especially if your workplace finds out it can save 100K of money from gear and accessories and not lack quality.

excellent points. Sometimes people in these treads pain all content with one brush - that "shooting iPhone is stupid." But even those who say as much probably have one in their pocket and use it regularly. The situations each of us elect to go up or down the tech scale is an individual's choice. Your points here about critical standards are an excellent point to reinforce that.

I have a iPhone 15 Pro Max with Cage, external SSD, bluetooth button, extenal mic and powering on a rig/tripod, it's like 1/100th of what you have, but results are great even for that 😀 And I cut in Sony Vegas Pro 21 😛 So nothing professional, but I love it 🙂 More accessible than any time before, my former rig was Canon XH-A1 with external mics etc., this is a step forward.

Strada, So much in-depth research, information, and a rich knowledge of photography. This is a well-researched content. It's almost like a movie videography class. Why would someone go this length in creating a KZfaq content instead of rehashing what we all already know? Instead, he went the extra mile just so he could give us a trailer load of value. Is there a way I could give this video 10 stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟?

Here’s the thing… I appreciate what you’re trying to accomplish. I’m also admittedly excited to the growth in development of these iPhone cameras. I think in another 5-10 years that we could literally be looking at them the same as a cinema camera. I also understand that some people have limited resources. But the lengths one must go through to do what you’re talking about to achieve that look, is it just more financially viable to spend the extra money to rent a cinema camera or hire a DP that already has their own camera?? What’s the difference in the end financially?
@Michael_Cioni
@Michael_Cioni 4 ай бұрын
I concur. To be clear: I DID hire a DP (and gaffer and AC). No one gets great images on any camera for free. It gets easier with dynamic range and Apurture lights, etc, but you need great talent to get great images. That's not likely to change. I happen to have all this gear, so wrapping it around an iPhone instead of an Alexa is actually kinda easy when cages and cables are laying about. But if I HAD to make this work on a budget, the Nucleus + Beastcage + USB Hub is really all you need on Bogen sticks. That would be $2000 all in and you COULD do wireless video over AirPlay (Apple lets you do this with the Blackmagic Camera App). It's latent, so certainly not ideal, but it's free. That said, I still don't think anyone would ever do this. But it's how we establish foundations and get inspirations on what we COULD do. The 5D wasn't actually very good in 1080p, but people solved the gaps and it led to all the robust solutions we currently have. If I had to make a prediction, RED, Arri and SONY don't go away in 10 years, but I do think Apple will be in the mix.
@TheConstructiveCritic888
@TheConstructiveCritic888 4 ай бұрын
@@Michael_Cioni Completely agree! And I greatly appreciate the response! I re-read what I wrote to you and was worried it came off as pessimistic, and that’s not at all what I was trying to convey. I love the thought process and you have an engineer’s mentality in how you approach problem solving! I think, much like your video proved, that we are on the verge of these iPhones becoming actual cinema cameras. With where they’re at now I think I would be very willing to shoot something basic, easy, and experimental with it. It’s worth that much for sure! But for projects where I obtain a little budget $3,500+ I’m gonna stick to Arri and RED. But certainly in the past I never ever considered an iPhone and now I’m intrigued and keeping my eye on where they’re going. Thank you again! Love the video 🙏🏻

I think the best part about the iphone trend is what it implies for camera producers. I am waiting for Panasonic to update the S5IIX. That camera to me is perfect. It has features of $6000-$10000 cameras, and because of those features, at $2000 it justifies its cost above an iphone and under the pro cinema cameras.

I love the cinema mode on Apple, and for vlogging which is often split second capture the moment filming it's as good as you can get. The one thing I struggle with is colour grading the Apple with my other cameras, and keeping the lenses smudge and fingerprint free when it's also being used as a phone! Great video though 💯👍
