Thanks man! Would definitely say this is gunna be a commonly misdiagnosed issue. Hopefully it helps both techs and consumers along the way.

I have a 2014 that the head gasket was bad on. Felt like it was skipping timing so I started there only to find out it was the head gasket. On those models around 140-160k miles, the head gasket is known to leak and timing chain is known to stretch, so I replaced both while I was in there. Did the chain first and head gasket second. Haven’t heard of this one yet, but thank you

Yes the 2014 would actually still be a 3rd generation prius and they are prone to the head gasket failures. The 4th generation prius is 2016-2022 and the head gasket failures on these models are not as common as the 3rd gen prius….. the symptoms here are typically different too. Typically when these cars leak coolant into the cylinder through head gasket they tend to misfire on startup….. on the 4th gen prius….. they typically run fine but blow white smoke out the tailpipe when this heat exchanger leaks….. I’m seeing a lot of shops jump to the conclusion of it being a head gasket failure cause the symptom is very deceiving

That's known gen4 issue... Gen3s don't do that.

@@podrezd gen 3 prius does have a heat exchanger built into their cat assembly just like the 4th gen……however , though I have not seen any 3rd gen prius personally leak internally like this…… due to the similarity in design it is absolutely possible for a 3rd gen to experience this sort of failure.

@@rivieraauto8540 there is just no such statistics with gen3, but gen4 prone to have it. Just a manufacturer defect

I bypassed the heat exchanger sending coolant back to the system. No codes. No issues. The car warms up like a normal car and keeps the engine on full time if you set the heat to high on a cold morning. For me I couldn’t justify the cost of a the cat assembly (2k+) for what amounts to negligible cold weather coolant warming. Thank you for the videos. I subscribed.

Thanks for subscribing! Not sure what state you are in but that could be a potential smog failure in california due to the fact that it is considered an emissions control system. Being bypassed dictates a tamper to the cat system. But if you’re in another state that could work just fine im betting.
