This video is about restoration and repair a 1800's tobacco cutter. While disassembling this cutter, we noticed a crack on the cast iron body and fixed with welding. The blade is too rusty to cut the material it is supposed to, but our sharpening technique made it quite sharp (see the test on a piece of paper). We forgo any tobacco products here for a subjective test.
Needless to point out that safety comes first. So, if you would like to do any sort of technical jobs using tools and machines, roll up your sleeves but please be advised that you need to have proper gears, protections and experience.

I’m planning to restore one as its also relevant to work and hobby. But getting a lathe soon, so think I’ll wait. It’s hard choosing one but I def want the RJR. Afraid of big cracks since I don’t have welding experience. But can always take it to one I guess. I could have sent a nice plug of tobacco to cut too. lol

I just bought an antique tobacco cutter! Mine is a different brand and I don’t have all the cool tools to restore it but hopefully I’ll be able to get some rust off with CLR or something else. Thanks for your video.

Well done, sir. Perhaps a smooth, gloss enamel (like the original) would have been a better choice for the finish.

Thank you! I used this stone paint to have a better grip on the handle. You are right, the original paint was glossy.

It was Japaning NOT PAINTED!! (Japanning gives you the texture of a thick coating that can not be duplicated by simply grabbing a can of Krylon and spray a bunch of layer. Makes a very hard durably finish!)So, do it right to say you have restore it!! What you doing is repair!!

Thank you for your comment. Japanning is an old trick basically to prevent cast iron againt rust. While it was a good trick for sure at the time, it won't be as protective as a primer and paint cover. I think they would prefer ours if they had access to. :)

I’ve seen some cutting the blade dimensions out of a cleaver. Then drill holes to lock in the cutter.
