Hey 1st Sergeant, thanks so much for this video.I have decided to make them per your video. I have accumulated everything you mention in this video to make the rounds. Several things i ordered on line rather than drive miles to another city, and have still yet to receive some. So far I have gotten the glues, Cap pouch, Bullets from Track of Wulf, Got med a dowel and wood block today. Now got to get someone to drill the 9/16th hole in i for me. I have ordered caps, a 1859 Sharps sling from Dell's i think, the Tissue squares, the little boxes for ammo packs, Sharps ammo labels. Stil got to find Receipt paper and gonna order me a Sharps cart pouch from Cary Davisson. 1st Sgt, your videos are so well done, calmly spoken and informative, they make people interested in it. My 1859 is an Chiappa (Armi Sport) and beautifully made, wood to metal fit is superb, wood is beautiful, Color Case hardening is Beautiful. Thanks again for your very informative and helpful videos. I look forward to making the rounds as much as I do shooting the new rifle. Davd Edelen, formerly 19th All Inf and 51st Aabama Cavalry.

Fantastic! You are going to be set up! Thanks so much. Paper cartridges are fiddly and take some experimentation, but convenient when you finally get it to the range. We're always here for you if you have any questions.

I read something about a Charlies's Tubes makes and offers the tubes ready made, like 300 to a bag. But I can not find him. I did experiment and made a couple and glued a bullet in and put it into the rifle until I got my tube length down pat. Mine seemed to be aroumd 1 7/16ths. Once I get my end tissues I will actually make some bullets. Looking forward to it. I also order a cartridge box from Cary Davisson. Can't wait to get it. I have always been a CW buff and was a reenactor during the '80s up to mid '90s and have always thought Civil War equipment was just so Cool. I am 63 now and having surgery on my knee Friday. so too old and decrepid. I do miss it. My brother and I were raised by my grandmother here in Alabama and spent a lot of time with my other one up in southern Maryland. We grew up hearing stories of theri grandfathers and uncles in the war, who died, whose homes were burned and looted, etc. Only one was with the Union. My great grandfather was a doctor from northern Ky and was Surgeon with the 11th Ky Cav, USA. It is funny, of the many ancestors who fought in that war, the only one whose portrait hangs above my mantel pieces is Dr. Rodgers, the Yankee. I had an artist do a portait of him in uniform. I would like for you to see it.

I only use nitrate paper when I'm hunting so I don't start a fire. It does work rather well and I find it aid's to slightly more accuracy at longer range but it's a lot of time waiting to dry when you do a batch of 100.

This is a great video! You are perfectly correct to emphasize the dowl, most important part of the process. A good finish sanding and I actually poly coated mine. I build my cartridges for my pistols. Both .44 & 36. Same process. Just a excellent subject, well done for a teaching type video. I am glad you are getting more technical with how the ammo is assembled. Oh a small bit of tallow information, lambs tallow does not go ransid. Others do, especially in the summer. For the lube, 2 parts tallow, 1 part bee's wax. Double boiler, I will put my conical bulletin a foil pan and just pour the mix in. When cooled just pick the bullets out. For wonder wads cut the felt to fit the pan and pour mix over it until saturated. Not to much easy to do. Some guys dunk the felt the pull it out and lay it on foil, wax paper to harden then punch out your caliber. (My personal favorite as I shoot mostly ball ammo)
@CompanyD2ndUSSS
@CompanyD2ndUSSS 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for adding this, it's certainly going to be helpful! I thought it was odd the 1859 manual didn't suggest a mix for the lube since tallow can also get gooey when hot. Your recipe adds a lot more stability to the original lube. Oh, and thanks for sharing the tip on coating the dowel. I seriously considered it and now I might just do it.

I got my reloading kit from Shiloh Sharps, it came with two former's (1 in .45 cal and the other in .54 cal) along with nitrated papers to make the cartridges. Don't know if they still have anymore since the 1859 is not listed any more. I've been using the Lyman 54 cal Minnie ball so far in mine. Just got a mold to make what looks to be a very similar bullet to the ones you have.

More great stuff from Company D! Was waiting for this one, very informative as usual. Do you ever make "squib" rounds, where all the powder is replaced with corn meal, air, or non-combustible substance, so that you have a round that looks real but doesn't fire? I figured such a round might be handy for demonstrations and letting spectators hold and such! Also, what is the projectile made of? If it's solid lead, are there any health and safety measures you should take when working with them, or is thoroughly washing your hands afterwards sufficient?
@CompanyD2ndUSSS
@CompanyD2ndUSSS 6 жыл бұрын
We do make a dummy round filled with corn meal and brightly labeled to distinguish it as a dud to show the public. We keep it secured in a box for demonstrations so it doesn't get mixed with regular blanks and cause a safety danger. These are pure lead bullets and like most reloaders, I just wash my hands when I'm done messing with them. Take whatever safety precautions you feel best using.

I learned a lot from this was looking to get the 1863. I have two questions. What are the max charge of BP that can be used for hunting. Next is would it be okay to coat each paper cartridge in hot wax to make it a little bit better water resistant for hunting. As you can tell I am thinking of trying to hunt with one if I buy one. Thanks from Ohio.
@CompanyD2ndUSSS
@CompanyD2ndUSSS 4 жыл бұрын
60 would be about right for a max charge with a bullet. The 1860 ordnance dept called for 60. I've also had decent accuracy with 50 and 55 grains, just have to play with it a little. As for waxing I would try it with waxing the "casing" first then wrapping. I would just be worried of the wax seeping through to the powder and fouling it

I just purchased a Pederisoli 1859 cavalry Sharps and your cartridge that you just made looks to be too short for my carbine's chamber. I've tried making my own paper cartridge and with the bullet along with 80 grains of powder, my cartridge is still a little short for making a tight fit in the chamber.
@DMEII
@DMEII 5 жыл бұрын
Hello 1st Sergeant. I have made my first four complete rounds. I won't make anymore till I get my rifle back from DGW. My rear sight was backwards and had to send it back for exchange. When I get it back I will test the fit of these bullets to make sure what length I need. I have a question. I measured from the back of my bullet which I had dropped into the chamber and seated it and it was right at 1 1/2" so I eased it to 1 7/16th. I got those boxes like you have and made two of them into ammo packs. So cool how easy and infomative your videos are. Anyway, mine are a tad to long to fit in the box. I can force them but afraid I will bust my paper or the tissue back. So now I know why you said 1 1/4" inch. But seems like in my rifle that was too short (I expereimented. If I use that length tube, and there is a bit fo a gap between the base of the bullet and the flash hole in block does that matter? I am barred from Facebook for 30 days for posting pics of Sharps Ring-Tailed bullets on the Sharps Rifle Forum. How stupid. I would like to post pics or sent them to you but as I said I only know how to communicate with you ether here on youtube or Facebook.

Sorry to hear about your Facebook issues. You can find Cpt. Whitehall's email on our webpage, you can reach out to him, too. My overall length of live cartridge does have a gap between the flash hole and the end of the cartridge when in the block. How much of a gap a rifle will tolerate is up to each rifle. Your manual may also have some good info and suggestions.

Hey 1st Sargeant, I finally tried to shoot one of my cartridges. I tried two types of caps and like 8 caps and it never fired. I dry fired it and blew a leaf off the table so I know fire is getting through the block. The only thing I can think of is the several years old Pyrodex is the problem. If I can ever find some real BP around here I will make some rounds with it and see how it does. I made 20 live rounds and it won't shoot. I am so disappointing. What do you think?
@BurkeSchneider
@BurkeSchneider 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, While I don't own a Sharps, I've fired many rounds through my 1861 Springfield reproduction. When I first got the musket, I used Pyrodex. Unfortunately I had trouble igniting the charge. Keep in mind, the main charge on the musket is much closer to the cap than it is on a Sharps. Considering the flame of the cap has much further to travel on the Sharps, you're getting even less flame to hit the charge than you do on a conventional musket. My hunch is that you'll need to use real black powder to get consistent ignition.

When you load with loose powder do you fill up to the block or do you use a measured load?? If the powder is not firmly against the block will be an issue??
@CompanyD2ndUSSS
@CompanyD2ndUSSS 4 жыл бұрын
First, let me say follow your rifle manufacturer's instructions for safe operation and seek any final say from a qualified licensed gunsmith. When we use loose powder, we use a measured load within the recommended safety guidelines of the manufacturer. The Sharps paper or linen cartridge doesn't fill the breech completely, either. When live firing the rifle, we've never had an issue. For more details, you can check out some Sharps Rifle forums for an even deeper explanation of the rifle's design and engineering.

Good question, but it wouldn't for several reasons most notably, the flash enters the breach from the side on a Springfield. That and the U.S. Gov't spent years researching and developing the live round that saw reliable and effective service for those pieces. Cap and Ball, and maybe British Muzzleloaders have done videos for the rounds used by companies like Springfield and Enfield you could probably check out.

I can't speak to nitrate paper since I'm too lazy to experiment with it and regular paper is perfectly acceptable to us. If you dig around on black powder forums, you should be able to find a lot more information about that. Cream of wheat is in the breakfast aisle of most grocery stores. It's kind of like oatmeal.
@andy2c0
@andy2c0 5 жыл бұрын
To make the Nitrated paper is simple. You take potassium nitrate and mix it with hot water till it won't dissolve any more (saturated solution) and soak the paper in the solution for about 30 seconds then hang and let dry. The paper you use should be 100% cotton rag paper, regular paper won't work as well. Haven't had any problems with the rounds not going off. For the base I use either tissue paper or if you can find magicians flash paper. The flash paper is highly flammable so much more care should be used.

Got the new rifle and after much experimentation I found that no 1 1/8" long , 2F carts would fire reliably , but most of the 4F in base( 10gr) + 60 gr main charge 2 or 3f would . The best and most reliable cart seems to be 1 7/8" long , 60gr 3f + 40 gr cream of wheat . Basically, it seems this gun needs full length carts for now , although it may get more forgiving as it gets older and more worn .

Yep. These are not igniting at all. All I'm getting is holes in the paper from the cap ignition, but the spark isn't enough to ignite the powder. Not a member of facebook, so I can't see how you guys are loading these... Are you leaving the bullet loose in the chamber so the cartridge rests against the flash hole? If the rifle is angled down at all the bullet holds the paper cartridge in the front of the chamber and there is a gap the spark has to cross.

Not being there, we can't address your particular situation definitively. Always follow your owner's manual and consult a gunsmith if and whenever necessary. That said, the paper cartridge doesn't fill the chamber diameter completely. The bullet must be perfectly seated for safety. You can also check muzzleloading forums for more information, too. That is what I was thinking too. It's just pig fat rendered down instead of beef. Piggly Wiggly has little tins of it pretty cheap too. I got some coconut oil for cooking and didnt like it. It is hard, wonder if Coconut renderings would work?

Ethan, my son, why the hell are you out in the BLAZING HEAT in your frock coat? Love, Mutti P.S. Don't forget to drink water while you're out there. It's hot as balls!

1st Sgt Koepp, do you have a FB page? It would be nice to be able to communicate wth you. But have you ever heard of Cartridges Unlimited? Owner Mike Watson? His fold up little catolog reads" "CARTRIDGES UNLIMITED. Authentically Rolled Cartridges; Mike Watson, Sutler " If so, is he still in business? I have an old catolog and he must have moved or out of business. His number is a dead number.

Hey David, I don't have a FB page, but I've seen your wonderful pics! As to your question, all I can say is that I've come across that name before in black powder forums. You might want to dig around there. There are some fairly obscure specialists well known in forums who've been around along time but like Mike may or may not still be in the biz.
