I got to handle an 1861 Enfield while I was in Afghanistan. It was a slightly longer example and it was converted to a breech loading, cartridge firing model in .577, I'll always remember that rifle. This video was a joy. Thanks Hickock45!

Hickok's videos make me want to own every gun ever made. I can't afford all this. I fall in love every time he brings out one of those old cowboy revolvers or rifles. We have all the tech stuff now but nothing beats the plain old romance of those older guns from the Old West era to the world wars eras.

I almost forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed this one. I know the ol' black powder has fall out in popularity a little over the years ---but I still love em.. I will never forget shooting my first .50 cal Hawken back in the late 70s. We had a black powder club in high school. Yep times have changed.

Good video, Hickok45. The usage of a black powder firearm can easily extend the time on the shooting range. It takes longer to load and shoot. For a lot of people, it's just more 'quality time' outdoors. ..... Also, Hickok45 provides good information about loading and shooting black powder guns. He explains about cleaning black powder firearms at the end of the video. Hickok45 might be old enough to remember the days, when cavemen just threw rocks at each other, but Hickok45 has kept up with the advantages of modern technology. Thumbs up to Hickok45.

+john smith - As long as you are not paying "by the hour" for range time then I agree with you. Taking my time and loading up a black powder weapon is very relaxing for me. As Hickok has said before, having a muzzleloader pretty much makes you a "hand loader". You are just hand loading at the range instead of at home on a press. I hear so many people say that they could never shoot muzzleloaders because they don't want to spend all that time loading. However, some of them will go home after a range session with their semi-auto of choice and then spend dozens of hours tumbling, cleaning, priming, sizing, and loading brass/ammo for the next range session. They spend just as much time on "loading" for their semi-auto as they would for a muzzleloader. The difference is that they are doing it at home instead of at the range.

I clean my C&B revolvers and ML rifles and pistols much the same way. Sometimes use a 90% water / 10% Ballistol solution (AKA "Moose Milk") as "Step 1" for a thorough cleaning if I'll not be shooting the weapon again for a few weeks. "Step 2" is the full Ballistol lube treatment similar to what Mr Hickok45 shows here. On shooting day, before hitting the range, I wipe away excess oil, and then pour boiling water down the bore followed by punching the bore with several dry patches then set aside muzzle-down to cool as the hot metal evaporates all water away. Revolver cylinders are dipped in boiling water for a couple minutes, wiped dry, chambers dry-patched, nipple areas blown thru and brushed then set aside to cool and evaporate. The boiling water seasons the Ballistol into the steel and prevents rusting. With the boiling water prep, I never have to pop caps on the nipples, simply load and fire when ready at the range!

I owned a 1917 Enfield 30.06 from WW1. I think it was made in Eddystone PA. It had one hell of a recoil. However I sold it for my Ruger GP100 .357 with a 6" barrel. It found its life at the VFW as a parade rifle. Given to my dad as a gift, So I had it re-blued, re-finished the stock, and replaced the firing pin. But because there were millions of them made, I couldn't sell it for over $100

Good job Sir. Back in the day I hunted with a .50 front loader. Dropped a large bull elk from 90 yards. Also was well practiced, and could hit 1/2 gal. Milk carton random range, 5 shots inside one minute...pre measured powder, greased mini bullet, primers on leather disk in upper vest pocket.

Thank you for the excellent video, Hickok45! That Musketoon has always been my favourite B.P. firearm. Bought mine back in the early 1970s, as I recall, and still have it. Original box, too! Darned if I didn't break that nipple protector, though, the very first time I used it as a snap cap. :-( Being frugal, I used Crisco for lubing up the Minié bullets, and usually put some in the hollow base, as well. Never had any fouling problems. You've made me think it's time to get her out and get dirty again!

I have that exact same rifle, Birmingham production Parker-Hale Musketoon. Unless I'm restuffing to shoot at charging Rebs, or Turks , or whoever, I sometimes run a wet patch down the bore just for peace of mind. Barring that I blow down the bore and run the rod down to knock any embers down. I know there are the "I've fired a million rounds in competition and never had a cookoff" guys but I shoot slow and leisurely target shooting. Also, paper cartridges and Pritchett bullets will change your life.

I did find one thing you don't want to spray Ballistol on -- shellac. I have a Japanese-made Zouave rifle from the 70's that I sprayed it in the barrel of, and allowed it to sit. I came back a couple of hours later to finish cleaning it, and the Ballistol had run out the nipple and down the buttstock and taken the finish right off. I didn't know until then the stock had been finished with shellac. But the solvent for shellac is alcohol, and the alcohol in the Ballistol had done its thing. A refinish of the stock is one of this winter's projects.

Massive bullets at .58 cal - no wonder the wounds soldiers suffered were so brutal. As for me, I'm not sure I could get into the whole 'procedure' involved in firing a weapon like this but after watching I think I (and perhaps many people) would definitely like to try!! Great video
@mtslyh
@mtslyh 9 жыл бұрын
+Chris Dooley - The 'procedure' is part of the fun. It is amazing to sit there and experience what they had to go through back in the day (sometimes in the heat of battle). As Hickok has said before, with black powder you are essentially a "hand loader" and you don't even need a press. I'd recommend starting with a cheap percussion revolver from someplace like Cabelas. If you watch for them you can get them on sale pretty cheap. Always wait for a good sale. They are a lot of fun and the "fixin's" are pretty easy to find.

Oftentimes, a Minè ball sizer/lubricator eliminates the need for a bullet starter. Just place the ball in the barrel, and ram it down with the ramrod. When I used to shoot .muskets a lot, I found that helped. FWIW.

I let a 1858 Parker Hale get away from me just the other day {made me sick}. I guess I am going to pull the trigger on a Pedersoli since they are a great musket maker, and the Parkers only become available so rarely. Last comment; Depending on how much you shoot your holy smokes irons, I have found it beneficial to remove the stock and do a more through cleaning. I cringed watching hick spray {soak is a better term} his '61 down like that! If you were to remove the stock, you would find black powder residue has been flushed down between the stock and the irons. Overtime, this will damage both.

+Immopimmo - Not that hard if you don't mind starting with a percussion revolver. Watch Cabela's for a good sale. As for powder, I know that a lot of people will say this is sacrilegious, but I personally prefer to shoot a black powder substitute like American Pioneer. Very easy cleanup, good smoke, and just about everyone carries it. Real black powder is getting much harder to find these days.

+Treasure Pirate Thanks for the answer. :) Unfortunatly I live in Sweden and we have silly weapon laws. You can buy an antique percussion revolver without any permits and fire it but if you want a modern replica by Uberti you need a license which is hard to get if you're not an active member of a shooting club. Also you're not allowed to store any amounts black powder in your own home. I really envy american shooters for your freedom. Things seems much more fun and easier over there. :)

I would like to see you use the Pritchett paper cartridge system that was designed for the weapon ? Do you have access to a 2 and 3 banded Enfield? The hot water/soap system has to be dried with quickly as the rust will all but flash. One good system is using denatured alcohol to absorb the water, dry patches followed by oil patches... Ballistol eliminates all of that struggle to clean a musket..... The Parker-Hale Musketoon came out in 1974 and I purchased the first one for sale at Battleground Armory that was located on I-65, Goose Creek, Franklin, Tennessee. Since then, I have been shooting it ever since. With the results of the musketoon, I had to purchase the 2, 3 banded rifles and, finally the Whitworth.... I have never shot the Cadet rifle. All of the original/reproduction P/H's were of the finest quality and have served me for 47 years. Keep on bustin' those caps....and making smoke...

I often wondered how the soldiers of the revolutionary war and civil war were able to fire as many shots as humanly possible without their muskets blowing up or seriously injuring them from a powder flash. After all, in the heat of battle they didn't have time to play around making sure the rifle had no embers in it. They just kept loading and shooting. I'm sure it happened, but we don't read or see accounts of it in history for some reason.

+Rich B. Yeah, it's not very common. Plus, as long as your face is not directly over the muzzle, it's not like you're going to blow yourself up. Could burn your fingers a bit. It IS a very good argument for never pouring powder directly out of a large container into the barrel, of course.

I'm pretty sure the reason muskets were so long was to lengthen the reach of the bayonet, giving the soldier a better go at defending against calvary. A small carbine is definitely much more practical for a target shooting gun.

It was because firing over your buddy's shoulder in line formation with a barrel shorter than 39" would blow his ear drums out... if you didn't accidentally shoot him in the back of the head in the heat of battle. When line formation tactics ended, the rifles got shorter, but even up to the m16/m4, they still had a bayonet lug
