7 ай бұрынLet's make a beautiful Crochet Sontage from 1866! it's actually a nice relaxing pattern ( well, until the border lol )
you will need some #4 worsted weight yarn / Aran
and a 5mm Tunisian hook and a 6.5mm crochet hook
I used about 500 yards of the Scarlet and about 200-250 yards of the black for the border
to alter the size simply start wit more starting stitches, this will depend on your size needed, this pattern will fit a small/small medium
you should also add more rows on the back and the 2 front panels to suit yur needs, they are made to fit so it's hard for me to give you an exact stitch count, but for reference, the lower back point measures 1.5 inches for the small/small med

I am not a living historian, but i am making myself one right now! i have some sunset colorway cotton from an older projext i no longer love and i think this will be perfect for it. and in cotton means i wont die in my 90 degree fall and spring temps!😅

I fell in love with the style shawl, but I am not a crocheter, so I found a knit pattern for a Swedish or danish fisher woman’s shawl, and I’ve been wearing it for a couple years now. It’s the same idea as yours, wraps around your waist and I made mine tie in the front, but I used plain garter st. Not as fancy as yours however it still keeps me warm around the house in Maine winters. 😄

O my! I've been procrastinating on learning tunisian for yrs now. THIS is the project that caught my eye LOL. I'm doing this left handed. Had to start over a bunch of times because I kept messing up the increase. Finally made it to 33 rows tonight. I'm using Red Heart camo colorway yarn (not the best to see stitches -another added complexity) - seems a great choice to be "battle ready" this year😂 Thank you for resurrecting these historical pieces. Your patience is near infinite. Happy 2024.

During my reenactment days a sontag was worn by many, many women. They are wonderfully warm and safe to wear around the fire. Thank you. Great teaching, we should all have one in our closet to wear today!

I like the way you make nice neat edges. Thanks for the detailed instruction. The antique sontags you show at the beginning are very appealing to the modern eye. The idea of a warm garment that doesn't interfere with movement and daily work is timeless.

Sontag is a new term for me, but I love the garment. I do not crochet but surely it could be made of fabric. It has the functionality of a vest but is so much more feminine than many other vest styles. Sometimes I need added warmth around my upper body but prefer to keep my arms unencumbered. The shawl effect about the shoulders and snug waist will give visual balance to a long full skirt.

I believe Bernadette Banner and Costuming Drama have each made what you're thinking of. I want to say it's an Edwardian capulet, but I don't think that's the correct title? I fell in love with it after seeing both of their videos, and I'm so happy there's this option available. More accessible for me. 😁

Tricot in French knitting. faire du tricot, to knit ... I'm Romanian and for me "a tricota" means to knit ... Tricot can refer to a type of fabric that is used for tshirts undies etc because is sort of an inelastic knit ... So this simple Tunisian crochet is probably called a tricot because looks more like knit stitching on the wrong side and curly like you said (at 50:44) and knitting tends to curl 😊but is also inelastic a durable in the same time. Hope my two cent input is helpful 🙂

the 1860 pattern that you have a picture of at 0:07 (on the right) is a knit pattern. I modified it and crocheted it for my daughter who loves vintage anything. I even gave it a weave/waffle look by alternating blocks of front post and back loop work. She wears it a lot during winter.

That's called basket weave. I made one, too. A yarn eater! The pattern is from Go dey's Ladies Magazine, and The Ragged Soldier has both crochet and knit versions for folks to make.

*unsolicited opinion* the mor i look at the picture the more im convinced that a. the artist wasn't totally sure how to draw what was made 😅 and b. the border, if truely meant to be done with single crochets instead of tunisian simple, must have been intended to be done in long rows (sideways) instead of short rows. Also, c. if intended to be single crochet, they must have meant to have separate instruction for the inner border vs the outer border because i see the vandyke in the inner portion, but not the outer.... I'm just trying desperately to make it make sense because this is beautiful and i wish i could recreate it 😂 Bless you for always making it all come together!

I've always been told that the hook sizes for a tunisian crochet project should be a size or two bigger than they call for. It's always worked for me to get the correct size and gauge to increase it. Have a very merry Christmas.

@@serenity6415 Tunisian seems to be a tighter stitch as you work it. That smaller hook will cause the fabric to curl on you as you work. I would suggest just trying it with small swatches with different size hooks to see it and decide what you like best. Borders and cuffs make the curl no big deal for me.

Its french! Ay paul lets - its like saying Hey Paul let's... that's one way to remember it. Epaul is shoulder in french. Epaulets are anything that decirates the shoulder. Think the military fringe or shoulder pads/armour. Awesome find thank you for the upload I want to try this!

I made a Sontag for a costume, I liked it so much, I made 2 more to wear around the house in winter. I used a different historical pattern and knitted it. I just got some lovely yarn as a gift. I would love to make this, I just need a Tunisian crochet hook.

I love TL Yarn! That is where I learned to tunisian crochet as well! She makes it so easy to follow (at least for me) and my first tunisian crochet project was her gingham baby blanket. I did it in cream and two shades of sage green; it turned out beautifully! And I love THIS channel! Getting to see historical patterns come to life is so amazing and inspiring. All their kids and grandkids from 3 months old to 23 will be there. We don't have any children so I just love on them all! My mother brother and one of this 2 kids will be there as well. They are coming from Taos, New Mexico. We live in the Texas panhandle. I hope the beauty and the really joy of the season warm your and let you know that even if it's quiet, you are not alone and God's love surrounds you! It's been a stranger year than usual. It's hard to find the joy I usually have. It's just different this year but the joy is there. It's in the quiet times that I find the peace. Love in Christ

I have so much going on at the moment, but this will be great for my mom who has a hard time getting a sweater on by herself...(she is always cold) I will be adding the belt to it as in the picture, so she can tie it on. Love this one!!!

There is a Sontag with a belt. The others have the front parts button in the back, and the ties on the back wrap to the front to secure it.

I might have actually been hypnotized into making a sontag. It's mid summer in Australia, but I fell asleep listening to this, found some bulky weight where the dye lots were too different for my original plan for it, and now the arms are at my waist.

I have an old book that has a Sontag knit pattern. I don’t knit, but I am convinced it should be made with crochet as it contains a checkered pattern. Never done anything like it and I am really nervous, but it’s so beautiful! This has inspired me to try again. Thank you and Merry Christmas!🎄🎁

I love this pattern, I've not done much in the way of Tunisian crochet, I made a little pouch with a flap that was basically one long rectangle stitched up along the sides, but this looks like it would be a great pattern to experiment with especially to get the feel of using it for other clothing items. I am very happy to find this video. I am currently working on a skirt with the same stitch and this Sontag would go great with it! I had no Idea the skirt I am working on is historically accurate "sort of" LOL I am not following a pattern and I am using modern fibers. I told my friend I get the skirt and Sontag done all I need is a bonnet LOL. Thank you for this video!

This is lovely! I like how the edges of Tunisian crochet are nice and regular. You can see where to put border stitches.

I know nothing about Tunisian crochet but this was a fabulous intro and tutorial. You made it so simple and easy to follow. I'm thinking l might have to give this a go sometime. 😊

Loving this tutoriel. Only learnt to tunisien crochet last summer so its my biggest project to date. I used a 7mm for the main body and 8mm for the body which i attached directly much easier. Now making a second one for work . So thank you for making this video. 😊
