This is a video about the Ansonia "Peep O Day" Carriage clock. During reassembly, the rivet holding the mainspring in the barrel came out. I tried multiple things to get it to stay in. Then the mainspring cracked at the hole near the end. I had to make a new hole and also make a new rivet or J hook to hold the spring end in the barrel.

So far Cheryl you are doing a great job. Like the history that you gave with it. The "Mothers" did an amazing job in cleaning/shining up the case. Typically you can put your home made let down key on that screw on key to let the power down but I think in this case the clock is needing service so bad that it wont work. In this case I would take the hair spring escapement out, while holding one of the gears so it wont take off on you spinning. After taking the hair spring escapement out then let go of that gear to allow the spring to wind down. But if there is a damaged gear this method will make it worse. So you doing what you are doing is probably better off. You used to be able to buy more dampers for the music comb off timesavers. I just checked dont see them. I think they were made out of plastic. I have watched about 40 minutes so far. I need to take a break and work on my grandfather clock. I will come back to it later. So far you are doing great.

@@munnerlyn3 I didn't realize that there were two clicks and gears, that's why it wouldn't let down when I tried. I was releasing the wrong one. The other one wasn't visable while it was put together. Sorry the video is so long. I worked on it for 8 days! I would have broken it into two or more if I had checked it out before uploading.

you did a terrific job on that music box. Beautiful and it does sound great. Love the little card. I have used boxes. Yes it is always good that there are issues prior to putting the movement in the case. Sorry it happened but you dont learn things when nothing bad happens. I agree that you need a bigger hammer. LOL. You should put a block of wood under the spring when you drill it. Safer and it prevents the spring from breaking off. Plus start with a smaller drill bit to get a hole started. You should wear gloves also as sometimes when the bit goes into the hole it will cause the spring to spin possibly cutting your fingers. To make the tear drop tilt your drill toward the left which will give you what you need but you have to drill on both sides of the springs. Take a wooden dowel such as a broom handle or a wooden handle for the plungers that you can find at the Dollar Tree or should I say $1.25 tree for $1.25, that fits your hand and that is as long enough for the hammer as you want. Drill a hole in the dowel that is a tiny bit smaller than the handle of your hammer. Put some glue in the hole and force your hammer into the hole. Wait for it to dry. It is best to make one side of the nail head flat but you did a great job getting it all finished. Congrats. My German carriage clock that has alarm has a wooden base underneath. The music on this clock sounds great. I would still set my alarm on my phone until you know that this is going to work for you. You can only have so many excuses at work for my alarm didnt wake me up. LOL. As always you did a professional job with this clock repair. Great job. Thanks for the shout out at the end. God bless you and yours.

Thanks for watching and the comments. I'm going to use that idea for the wooden handle on my hammer. I'm wondering every time I use it, why they put that skinny little handle on a nice weight hammer head. I did make the bottom side of the rivet in the barrel flatter so that it was easier to get the spring to catch.

And thanks for the help when my spring broke and my rivet pulled out. Couldn't have done it without your calls. I was going to just order a new spring.

That is an interesting clock. Just one winder for both the time and the music. Interesting. Do you think the comb for the music box is too close. It is a metal clock and I would thing the sound of the music would be nicer, playing a bit softer. So, I am guessing you didn't clean the Main Spring. I was wondering if the music played off the center, starting point of the spring and the clock used the outer part of the spring for a start. Cool you found that card on E-bay. Cool hammer/screwdriver. It's amazing how when you are pitting the clock back together how you forget how some things go back on, but when you are watching the video, I keep saying, No, No, not that way, lol. (Your Speed adjustment). (Mark to the Recue). Sometimes it is better to use a smaller bit, then go up to the size you need. You did a great job on the clock. Thanks for the Shout-out. God Bless.

You and Mark both suggested a smaller bit to start the mainspring hole. I felt like when I went from a smaller to a larger bit for the next drill, the bit would just catch unevenly on the metal hole and give me problems. As far as the music box, it sounded with a tinny reverberation when it was quiet or loud. If it had a bottom plate on it, secured to the floor of the case, I feel like it would prevent that vibration I can hear. I'm guessing it used to have one, because there are 4 square holes in the floor like a piece of metal came through and was bent over to hold it on. I did clean the mainspring. The barrel has two wheels on it, one on top and one on bottom. Each wheel has a different job. One turns the time, and one turns the music. Thanks for watching and leaving comments. Love that you are coaching me from the sidelines and telling me how it goes back!

i might be totally wrong but i work on pocket watches but I've run across similar tools as the whole closing punches and I THINK iys spring loaded to help you center the punch over the whole and when you hammer it while centered its closes the whole instead of using a small punch and making many small indentions around the it squashed the metal around the whole all at once. not sure though of of using it that way on a round barrel would be a good idea but on a flat plate i could see it working. but im probably totally wrong

@@hellothere312 well it didn't work anyway. I have one of the spring loaded ones but it doesn't close all the way around at once, just a single punch hole. I'm still trying different things with different tools to see what works when I run into a problem. Then I share it, so maybe you won't have to make the same mistake! Thanks for watching and leaving comments!

I actually have a set of the spring loaded that you might be talking about. I've never tried putting the center in the hole. It may do just what you are talking about. I'll try it next time. I think they are for closing worn pivot holes.
