Here I remove the leaking fuel tank from my 1986 XJ-S,, restore it, and refit.
What I don't show well is the many tiny, pin hole leaks in the bottom of the thank. The KBS fuel tank restoration kit sealed the leaks. There are videos on the KBS website showing how to implement the treatment.

I have a 1986 XJS and I am starting to do some of the same repairs that you are doing. I have watched all of your previous videos (all very helpful) and will watch all of your new ones as they become available. I have owned the car for 4 years starting with 47,000 miles and now at 60,000 miles. I replaced the 3 speed automatic 7 months ago with a 5 speed Tremec - it is a different car - so glad I did it. Thank you for your videos, waiting for the next one.

Thanks, does the fuel filler nozzle pull straight out. I am having trouble getting my on out. Removed both clamps. The hose is loose enough to spin but still having trouble.

I recall it did..... I applied some wd40 spray and wiggled.

I really liked your video. I have a fuel leak in 1985 XJS every time I start the car. Any idea where I should start? Under the back seat was some fuel and a puddle under the car.

That sounds more like a leak connected to the fuel pump running. As I'm sure you know, the pump runs for a few seconds before the car starts (or hot wire the pump to the battery). Then, remove the carpet and try to eyeball the leak from the fuel hoses that run between the tank, the lower tank, pump and filter. Leaking tanks is very common, so check the padding underneath the tank while you've got the carpet out. Also, Ed Sowell (www.efsowell.us/eds-interests/eds-jag/ ) does a write up about how he solved boot fuel smells.

I can speak from experience that the fuel cell is what it is. The sheet metal is very soft and susceptible to rusting through. The gasoline smell is generally numerous, numerous micro pinholes weeping raw fuel fumes into the boot and at that point should really be replaced with a new one that has been sealed prior to installation. I stripped the primer/paint off of mine and mixed up polyester resin and Aerosil recoating the entire exterior of the cell before refinishing in order to make sure it does not weep fumes into the boot with the battery and external fuel pump and electric antennae etc...... fuel fumes without ventilation is bad news.

Did you have to remove two bolts in the back window under the carpet before removing the tank?

I did not remove these bolts. Just the ones I showed you.. And I'm not sure if i noted this, but i put the straps back the wrong way around initially. (Sorry for the slow reply - I've just realised this chat section exists on youtube)
