Here's one of my early Edison drawer model Concert Phonographs playing a very early Edison Concert brown wax cylinder from my collection, "Uncle Josh Weathersby's Troubles In A Hotel" by Mr. Cal Stewart. What is very interesting about this early original recording is that Cal Stewart takes us back to his time (1899) by mentioning trying to blow out the gas lighting in his hotel room and listening to an early coin-op Edison phonograph ("funny-graph" as he calls it) with listening tubes. Thanks for stopping in for a visit and I hope you enjoy the video!

How miraculous it must have been to hear the human voice first recorded.

In my copy on columbia record, it refers to the "funny-graph" as a graphophone! Because of course phonographs are made by edison on edison records, and graphophones are made by columbia who produced my record!

That was wonderful! Love this kind of humor... it seems that the concept of being perplexed by new technology is a long-standing part of the human condition! Thank you so much for sharing!

That’s a beautiful Concert and that cylinder is in great shape. I just broke into this hobby a few months ago with my tax refund and I really can’t explain exactly why I am having such a good time with it, but I am. I always had a fascination with Edison in particular that I picked up from my grandfather. Between tinkering with my Fireside and reproducers and rebuilding and learning about every aspect of fixing up this vintage tech, to just kicking back and enjoying listening to one of over a hundred playable cylinders I have collected, I haven’t had so much fun with a hobby in years.

Some condition on that cylinder. I like the way it takes that brake a second to slow down that big drum. Good show, thanks.

What a difference a nice big horn makes to the sound quality, most videos of cylinder machines are shown using the crappy little ones that don't do the records justice, even if it is more accurate to what most people would have used back then.

I’m thinking it took me 2 years to wait for the triumph I’m working on. I can’t imagine how long it will be if I ever get a concert machine

Hey Doug, sorry for giving you are hard time about the triumph on TMF. I’ve purchased some bronze wool and a brass brush to clean the threads on the triumph. Hopefully that will make a difference before I purchase a half nut. Oh by the way, that’s interesting to see a Cal Stewart concert record

Hi Andy, no need for apologies. I have always tried to help others that are having troubles with their phonographs. I've been there too! It can be really frustrating when a phonograph isn't playing quite right. I've become pretty good at figuring out phonograph problems from working on so many of my own. Cleaning the feed screw threads and assuring that the half nut threads are in good working condition are excellent tasks on your part. You'll get there!

Love the comment about trying to blow out the electric light. Does this Concert machine have a triple barrel spring motor like a Triumph?

The larger diameter made for a higher surface speed: this spaced the vibrations out, which made for better fidelity, at least in the brown wax era. When molded cylinders came in, with a harder surface, higher playing speed, and improved reproducers, this advantage was pretty much canceled out.

I completely agree with both Rich Blake and Bill (Lucius1958). Edison Concert cylinders and Columbia Grand cylinders rotate at a higher surface speed and their grooves were cut deeper than standard size brown wax cylinders. So the combination of higher surface speed and deeper recorded grooves provided these cylinders with much greater volume and increased clarity. Overall, exceedingly good reproduction for their time.
