Starting an 18 horse power Type G made by Olds Gasoline Engine Works around 1904. The engine weighs 5,300 pounds. It is sitting on a Bettendorf cart. The engine has 60" diameter flywheels with a 4.5" face. It has a 8.5" bore with 14" stroke and a displacement of around 794.4 CID or 13 liters.

In 100 yrs no one will have an LS on a trailer to show off but this thing will still be sipping fuel and doing work. Things just aren't made to last anymore, everything is disposable. Very nice work man!! I could sleep in a hammock to the sound of that thing

this is a great old engine and a clever mechanism.....as far as i'm concerned this engine represents the high point in petroleum engine technology and its been downhill ever since.....the world today would be a better place today if no petroleum engine of more than 1 cylinder or 18 hp or less than 5000 lbs had ever been built

if you had a belt and it was under load it would presumably hit much more regularly?
@HeavyMetalEngines
@HeavyMetalEngines 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, when under load it would hit every other revolution to try to maintain the RPM. This is a four cycle engine with an interrupted exhaust cycle. When the engine is at the RPM that the flyball governor is set to it will lock open the exhaust valve which keeps the engine from performing an intake stroke. When the RPM drops the governor linkage releases the latch out and it goes through the four cycles until at the proper RPM. The huffing and puffing air noise you hear is the air going in and out of the muffler when the exhaust is latched open.

I've never seen a large engine like this, before. I'm wondering how it is connected to its load...would that be a large belt running on the rim of the flywheel?
@HeavyMetalEngines
@HeavyMetalEngines Жыл бұрын
It would’ve had a pulley bolted onto the side of the flywheel and a flat belt would have ran off of that pulley to the load.

What happens when you put a load on these engines? Do they fire more often as the load pulls down the rotational speed of the flywheel?
@HeavyMetalEngines
@HeavyMetalEngines Жыл бұрын
These are four cycle engines. When the rpm is at the set speed it holds the exhaust valve open and coasts. With the exhaust open there is no intake stroke. When under a load it would fire every fourth stroke or two revelations of the flywheels to maintain the rpm that the governor is set at. Does that make sense? It doesn’t use a butterfly valve like a modern throttling engine but instead uses a delayed exhaust stroke by latching the exhaust valve open.
@welkinator

Standing on flywheel not smart seen a guy get tossed 15 feet
@HeavyMetalEngines
@HeavyMetalEngines 7 ай бұрын
There’s nothing wrong with standing on the flywheel if you know what you’re doing. It wasn’t even close to where it would fire off. I was going on a backstroke and it wouldn’t have fired if I wouldn’t of tripped the igniter. I’ve been doing it for 30 years so I think I know how to start a big engine. Some of my engines are so big there’s no other way to get the flywheel started without putting a foot on it. The key is to just putting your toes on it so if it does fire your foot slips off and away from it.
