As a person with an almost 100% Nova Scotian family, very glad to see you doing this series! Have also stumbled on the HANLEYQUEST tree quite a few times. Also have ancestors who came on the Speedwell with Jean George Bezanson .

Looks like the Bezansons (Besançon) likely kept the French naming convention of having many sons with Jean (John) as the first element of the first name, so: Jean-Pierre, Jean-Luc, Jean-Baptiste etc.
@_jeff65_
@_jeff65_ 2 жыл бұрын
That convention still has an impact today. I'm Jean-François, 4 of my co-workers are Jean-François. That's just one example of many.

It was a common feature among German speaking families as well. There are many males with the first name Johann in my family tree.

@@_jeff65_ Yeah, it's common outside the Romance speaking world too. For instance if I were French, I'd be Jean-Pierre.

I can’t speak for the pronunciation in the 1750s, but the name Boutilier is still very common in Nova Scotia today and is pronounced “Boot-Lear.”

Great content. The pronunciation of Boutillier is on point. Notice also the city of Besançon on the map not far from John Georges hometown!

When I heard and read the name Bezanson for the first time in the previous episode, I immediately had to think of the city of Besançon. And now we have the evidence that the family indeed came from that region. And yes, Montbéliard was known as Mömpelgard to German speakers, as it is very close to the area where German was spoken.

A family with sons called John (Johann), John George (Johann Georg), John William (Johann William) and John Casper (Johann Caspar) totally sounds like something my German farmer ancestors would have done! They might have even had a "Johann" and also a "Johannes" - both would be "John" in English. Or used exactly the same baptismal name for two of their (living) children and just given them different nicknames. The reason usually being that these happened to be the names of the godparents. Of course that tended to happen in villages that had another 5 families of the same surname, and with similar naming habits. Needless to say, researching these parts of my family tree is a LOT of work.

Really liked this episode. Good tips on finding those ancestors. Bezanson probably decided with North America now under British rule, the religious persecutions in France, plus identifying as German/ Swiss in a French province, he may as well take his chances in Nova Scotia.

The comment by Brian "there are a couple of groups of people that make up the Foreign Protectants" is in error. The Foreign Protestant are limited to those settlers that came to Nova Scotia in the early 1750s from the region tucked into the border area of France, Germany, and Switzerland. The colonists from New England who arrive in the early 1760s are called the Planters. They were not 'foreign", as these people settled in New England from Britain over a number of generations prior to the descendants arriving in Nova Scotia. Those who come after the Revolutionary War are the Loyalists. Again, these are not considered part of the Foreign Protestants. These people like the Planters before them were descendants of mostly British families that had long been established in the Thirteen Colonies. This Loyalist group also contained demobbed soldiers. The Scottish and Irish settlers were other distinct groups and certainly not Protestants as most were of the Catholic faith. Thus there were many distinct and separate groups of settlers immigrating to Nova Scotia between the early 1750s and early 1780s, and beyond. Most of the Protestant settlers who immigrated to Nova Scotia were not Anglicans (Church of England).

One line of my ancestry is from Nova Scotia (particularly Colchester and Cumberland counties). Among them were Loyalists, New England Planters, Scots who came there in the late 1700s and early 1800s. I've learned so much about Nova Scotia but also colonial New England and New York researching that line. I've been told that there are simply not a lot of records from the early-to-mid 1800s because Nova Scotia stopped keeping them or requiring them or so I was told by a researcher at the New England Historic Genealogical Society. That said, I found a marriage record for Nova Scotia in the Scottish archives because it seems the minister went back to the UK after finishing his work in Nova Scotia and took those documents with him.

It is quite possible the fellow was scalped. This was a time of great turmoil in Nova Scotia. The Mi'kmaq had been attacking the British settlements since the establishment of Halifax in 1749. The area around Lunenburg came under heavy attack and many settlers were killed and others taken captive. By 1755 the French and Indian War was raging and the larger Seven Years War was about to ignite. A bit of research in the Nova Scotia archives, etc., may help substantiate this particular gentleman was scalped. The French were paying bounties for the scalps.

Thanks again for NS information- seeing the sources & their use is a rare treat! This is another video I'll share with my cousin who's researching his Lunenburg Deutsche connection! Dr. Esther Clark Wright -- in her book "Planters and Pioneers" -NS 1749 to 1775 - notes that (Anna) Catherine Boutillier remarried, (1 January 1756) this time to Étienne Mariette , with whom she had 7 children. ( So - lots of half cousins out there! ) Dr Wright died in 1990 at 95. During her lifetime there were 2 editions - now long out of print. An authorized reprint came out in 2007, & may still be available. Other than the author's biographical details, the only change was the inclusion of her complete bibliography. The editor is most interested in correcting errors or omissions in future editions. (I'll try to send this video on to him as well.) A quick Google will tell if copies are still available. Again - many thanks

The New England settlers to Nova Scotia (my ancestors) were not foreign because at the time they were subjects of the British crown. After the expulsion of the Acadians at the close of the Seven Years War, land was advertised to British subjects and clearly to select people abroad. I believe there were more settlers from Connecticut, but certainly from Massachusetts as well. I just wanted to clarify a couple of points, not criticizing at all!

1755 let’s just say wasn’t a peaceful year in Nova Scotia.. it was the end of the Mi’kmaq war and deportation of 13,000 Acadians. These 2 groups were sometimes allies again the British. The story sounds embellished but conflicts were high. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Great video!

Jacques is translated James in English, and James and Jacques are derived from Jacob or equivalents of Jacob, Jacob being used in German. Jacob is also, of course, a Biblical name, son of Isaac, son of Abraham, who became Israel.
