Probably going to get scoffed at, but before I got my fowler, I filed the bayonet lug on my Bess into a makeshift front sight. Made a big difference.

My hat is off to each of you gentlemen. That looked like a lot of fun and fairly tough physically, given the weight of the firearms and the rigor of loading - especially when compared to modern firearms. I am pacing like a tiger waiting for my kits to show up. My wife keeps telling me that patience is a virtue. Darn virtues. Thank you for the great content.

G that looked like fun.Well done chaps. FWIW I would suggest a more aggressive charge of 120 grains of 1F and, for the number of rounds used, larger balls. The period size was to allow the full 60 rounds carried to be loaded in spite of fouling. With modern cleaner powders you can get away with a .72 or .73 ball in the Bess. Post Napoleonic war George Lovell reduced artillery and sappers carbines down from .753 to.733 as they would be unlikely to have to fire 60 rounds so could benefit from a closer fit to the standard service issue ball cartridge.

Barry has the slowest velocity I have ever seen out of a muzzle loader. the 22 second flight time over 50 yards on his second shot was amazing. LOL Probably the reason he shot low.

That looked like a lot of fun, except the snow part. I think I'm allergic to snow. LOL Something that's helped me tame my fowler is a laser boresight and watching a ridiculous amount of yt videos on aiming and fitting shotguns and shooting skeet. IMHO you have to aim these sight less muskets like shotguns. I replaced my flint with a piece of wood and dry fired with the laser boresight to look for my mistakes. Made a big difference. I also think your main charge is too light. I'd bump it up to 110 grains of 1.5f or 2f. YMMV Anyway, thank you for doing these videos.

Barry, your ball should have been a .715 or .720 if it is .75 cal. So basically like the undercaliber ball for the Ferguson which is a .65 and shot a .615 carbine ball. Of course, that was shot with a tallow/beeswax dip and you shoot with paper patching. Nathan shot a .66 out of a .69. I just think the Brown Bess Ball Size was way too small in order to compare accuracies. It was fun to watch that Barry kept his frizzen open while trying to fire. That will never go off.... And these two guns are probably a few of the only Pedersoli guns which actually have a correct flint breech and therefore work pretty well. I am still assuming that the springs are pretty terribly unbalanced in the lock which shortens the flint life???? How many shots do you get from a flint with these?
@TyrusPerises
@TyrusPerises Жыл бұрын
I've been wondering how these two would stack up. In your opinion, is Pedersoli a pretty accurate representation of the gun?
@ILoveMuzzleloading
@ILoveMuzzleloading Жыл бұрын
Pedersoli is as close as it gets in the mass market. For what I'm doing they are fine, but a lot of people have modified and 'fixed' theirs over the years by refinishing and even applying new hardware.

You're doing it wrong aren't you if you don't use the supplied ram rod with the gun and return it before each shot. I mean you can argue Soldiers might have in the stress of battle forgotten to prime first and resorted to primming one way or another after the fact and modern shooters adhere to safety, but you can't argue against the ram rod.
