Why is Oxygens typical oxidative state a negative 2?

Hey Emily! Elemental oxygen has an atomic number of 8 and so each atom carries 8 electrons. Of those 8 two go in the first electron shell and six in the second. The second shell can hold 8 total electrons though so there are 2 empty 'seats' that oxygen looks to fill using 2 electrons from any other atom it finds. When it gains those 2 extra electrons it has gained 2 more negative particles so carries a -2 overall oxidation state. Hope that helps!
