Several different rear sights were made for the 1903. One of the most notable variants is probably the one used by the USMC. For more information on the Marine's variant, check out the link: www.users.fast.net/~kragmeiste...

In my opinion the M1903 is the best bolt action rifle in the world. This is turly a riflemans rifle. The Phillipine Scouts used this rifle with great effect against the Japanese in the Bataan defense right after Pearl Harbor. My 2 great uncles who were Scouts did not surrender and kept on fighting with their 1903s until MacArthur returned and killed more Japanese.I feel privileged to own such a rifle with outstanding accuracy.Great video Brother!

I read parts of the FM guidebook which indicated they were shooting 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and yes up to 600 yards. One thing of note they were taught to have the top front sight post just touching the bottom of the bullseye. Which is counter how I was taught using the M16A2. Moreover, those WWI boys were taught to lead their shots on vehicles, airplanes and krauts running at them. My hat's off to them!

as far as I know the battle sight is for 547 yards. that is so if you aim at the enemy's belt buckle you will get a good hit at point blank to 547 yards. it's a battle rifle meant to get a hit on an enemy soldier at varying ranges in less than perfect conditions. When I do punch paper with mine I use the Christmas tree, because I can see the target better. as long as it is set for the appropriate range, you could use either one. I love this old rifle.

I have found that using the U notch is better for me for 200 yards or more using the leaf sight up as a battle sight. In the down position its battle sight set for 200 yards or less for man size targets it the combat sight. The aperture was good at 300-500 yards for bullseye targets for qualification.I found it in a Marine manual from 1935.The title is USMC Rifle and Pistol Marksmanship 1935.Its very redundant for using the M1903 but very informative.

Yes there were other rear sights. The type 4 sight was installed on the Model 1903-06 introduced in 1906 along with the .30 cal. Cartridge of 1906 aka 30-06. The original SpringField Model of 1903 had a tangent sight that was roller coaster type graduated out to 2,000 yards. The rifle also had a rod bayonet/cleaning rod. And was chambered for the 30-03 cartridge it used a round nose bullet of 220 grains at a muzzle velocity of around 2300 feet per second At the rear of the sight there was a steel peep sight. That could be raised but the hole was so small they say it is hard to see through. There are variants to these tangent sight. You have ladder sight as do i. I found if you aim at the knees at 100 yards using the battle sight you can hit the center chest cavity pda target .

How do you (me) remove replace a broken "windage" knob? Do I have totake the whole rear sight off? Thanks

Thanks but you also have to remember there were other versions of the rear sight that I really didnt go into too much detail. My main purpose was to put out correct information as many, if not most, youtube videos on the '03s never talk about which aperture to use in the first place and these rifles are shown being fired at 100 yds or less with the rear sight leaf folded down. So now I feel free to throw the "B.S." flag out there when I see it.

The battle sight he refers to is graduated to 547 yards that equals 400 meters not 400 yards.

Since I was an infant, I would hold my grandfathers 1903. Then he gave it to my dad and I immediatly took it and began killing hogs with it. I really need to get an m1 garand. 3006 is not a bullet for you .223 fans

I was about to like this video but you didnt explain any of the sights and you just ended the video... What ranges are sights, a,b,c,d,e... You cant say in the video or description? I thought that was the whole point of the video. You didnt even say how far you were shooting. Only that you were shooting with the 400 yards. You did say that you should have used sights d, or e but you failed to explain y or again what yards those sight are for. Ppl that watch this video stand to gain nothing from watching. You failed also to mention that over 1400 yards these sights are off which is sight B only.

Positively useless video. I was wondering what the actual deviations and yardages were for the four aim points are. Thumbs down.
