It would be quite hilarious if the only reason they're wedge-shaped would be that you can get a pair out of a much shorter piece of stock than if they were fully rectangular...

Given it has absolutely no affect on functionality, would cost next to nothing to do and actually saves money, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if that was the case.

Dang! I need to get a Starrett catalog. I've been doing things the hard way all my life! 73's W3IHM

I've always just set the shaft up in a machine vise and centered between the jaws. Use an endmill a bit smaller than the key width, mill the center, then kick it either side to finish it to size. Might come in handy for doing work in the shaper since no DRO available on it, but I only do internal slotting on that so probably still not much help. My Starrett tool of the week would be their 656 series of indicators. They have about a 3" diameter face so I can actually see it inside the machine when I at the control panel jogging or handwheeling an axis (usually B) to check/set geometry. You can drive a car into the largest machining center we have so the distances can get pretty large. Didn't know you had machining chops until your recent series covering some machinist tools. Uncanny how much we have in common.... 73's ....

🎉I've seen metal scales with a slight groove along their edge and wondered about it. These dohickies would slide along a scale so equipped still attached if slightly loosened. Might be useful in some situations.

Perfect 3D print project. Obviously not to the same precision but great for home shop quickie projects.

Oil and gas well drilling key seat = you're having a bad day. Key seat wiper and back reaming sucks.

I've seen it once with an angle rule on the slanted side. Does yours also have that?
