King Philip’s War is an event that appears over and over again in books about colonial America.
So when you have an event that has been as studied as King Philip’s War has been, is there anything new that we can learn about it by re-examining it in our own time?
Lisa Brooks, an Associate Professor of English and American Studies at Amherst College believes the answer to this question is “yes.” And today, she’s going to help us re-examine and re-think what we know about King Philip’s War by introducing us to new people, new ways we can look at known historical sources, and to different ways we can think about what we know about this event with details from her book Our Beloved Kin: A New History of King Philip’s War.

I've read Lisa Brooks' book, Our Beloved Kin. Spectacular historical scholarship, in a new approach to history, telling the story from the point of view of Weetamoo, imagining the experience she lived and superb leadership she exhibited.

This was not the first indian war. There was the Pequot War and Kieft's War, decades before.

Interesting critical gender lens evaluation of a historical period. If you like that. To me it's a bit 'see where they neglect the women narratives?' which seems, I dunno, distracting.

It’s just conformation bias in action. Women had no political or leadership significance in 17th century history. Men and women has their roles but natives kept no records so there is no way verify any of the authors claims other than English records which in and of themselves have a bias

Phew! Bias is alive and well -- then and now. "The past is less personal?" Hardly. This lecture attempts to simplify the complex - by ignoring completely the multi-faceted nature of these documents.

Is this based on facts or sensative liberal emotions???

Well, it's possible that it's based on both. Can you find anything about it that is provably inaccurate? Or some bit of information that was omitted?

Emotions. You can hear the author herself wanted to focus on less significant figures, particularly a woman. If you know anything about history, human nature, or culture you’d realize women were not nearly as significant as the author would like them to be. In times of basic survival or conflict males and female revert to their traditional gender roles. Natives kept no records so I highly doubt the historical importance of females in a culture that’s heavily traditional and patriarchal. Women had their roles but never were they as significant of feminist today would like them to be

@@johntalley2062 + The first statement out of her intersectional mouth was that the 50 years of continuous peace, understanding, & friendship between the early religious refugees in Plymouth Colony, & the later New England Colonies & the 5, or 6 major Native American tribes that also called the region roughly correspinding to the Southern New England states, home. This remarkabe 5 decades of peaceful coexistance, good trade relations, & mutually beneficial acts of cooperation following that first shared "Thanksgiving" feast, which our modern holiday is derived from.
