the rod that sticks out the end is there to support the weight of the piston. both pistons float inside their bores and are supported by the external bearings under the rods that stick out.this is to reduce any wear on the cylinder bores and pistons due to gravity. it would be very difficult to rebore this or even change out pistons.

also equalizes piston area for even displacement in all cylinders and have cooling water running through them as well

That would make a great air compressor for my shop.

screw compressor would use about 200 hp to do 900 cfm. yes i know you were joking

I imagine more that one of those ran away when they were in use. Bet that was freaking scary?

This looks like a well maintained engine. Where is it? I used to work on some similar to it.

To bad they don’t keep these looking this nice at the compressor stations!

Some do, some don’t . The ones up in Kansas 20 odd years ago when I was doing this line of work were polished from head to toe. Brass shined and paint was clean and fresh. Beautiful old machines.

Gonna take about $1500 in gas to run that thing for an hour.

The cam follower mechanisms on this engine are---odd. Unique.

the design looks like it would really wear fast

Common in those days. Didn't sed lobe cams until the Type 26, I think.

high surface area spreads out the load reducing wear, these engines ran continually for many months at a time
