That British Bloke that's one of the greatest achievements. The other would be the camerawork and the sense of danger and authenticity (which most movies don't have these days.)

Ramim Ahbab Shabab Aside from the book “All Quiet on the Western Front”, both the Great War and WW2 were dominated by the dualism of the Western and Eastern Fronts, and the idea of opening up a new front in order to divide enemy forces to give your side an advantage was a well used if not risky strategy. So yeah, mentioning fronts in relation to either world war can be taken as a pun.

Soldiers who fought in both wars made similar comparisons as a joke to get through hard times, but the epic scale in which WWI influenced humanity is arguably more significant; WWII looms larger in the minds of much of the world because it is chronologically closer and what the order and mentality of the world was shaped around, but it was coursed and fought over the unresolved issues of WWI. This was the best movie I've seen in a long time. It had some of the best camera work I've ever seen. The acting, costumes, and setting made everything feel authentic. I actually felt like it was 1917 and it never felt modern or like Hollywood. The twists were shocking. I grieved when the protagonist grieved, I was shocked when he was shocked, scared when he was scared. The protagonist was never safe, I felt like he was in actual danger and did not expect him to succeed like I do with superhero movies. I haven't been on an emotional journey in a movie in a long time. This was Godfather level good. The movie had actual stakes. I felt like I was there with the protagonist and did not feel like I was watching a movie. I haven't gotten that into a movie in a long time. It was brilliant. It is hands down my favorite war movie! It deserves to win oscars for the writing, directing, and acting. I highly recommend it.

@@opfronk Not everything is about action. The characters, the cinematography, the emotional moments, and the immersive film style were all great. And the gun fights that did exist were realistic and had actual weight to then which other war movies do not. For example, when Schofield was running from the drunk German I was on the edge of my seat because I wasn't sure if he would make it. This movie also did something that many war movies fail to do and that is make me jump at the gun shots. Schofield did not go in guns blazing towards the German but he realistically retreated. There are many moments like this throughout the film and personally I loved it.

I loved this movie, the first thing I wanna talk about is the gorgeous cinematography, Roger Deakins’ camerawork is once again a thing of absolute beauty, every shot in this movie is incredible and the technique of making it look like 1 continuous shot is very well done, the best aspect however is undoubtedly the suspense, this movie is absolutely terrifying in the way it’s put together, much like actual war the action scenes in this movie are very sudden and can be very startling, and when they’re not going on you feel tense cause you’re just thinking “Oh god when’s it gonna happen again” it’s like standing across from someone who’s holding a pin up to a balloon and you not knowing if he’s gonna pop it or not, this movie frightened me on a level no horror movie in the past few years did, the action is also very exciting, it’s not the most violent war movie I’ve ever seen or anything, in fact there’s barely any blood at all, but those scenes are still very effective, there’s not a *ton* of action in this movie but that didn’t really bother me, I was still invested in what was going on, I guess my main issue with it is kinda the same one I had with Dunkirk, there’s not really any character’s to latch onto, it’s not like a huge detriment to the movie or anything but it is something I think could’ve been done better, in the end this movie was fantastic, what it lacks in character or more than makes up for in its other aspects, the cinematography is amazing, the action is great, it’s filled with terrifying suspense and I was glued to my seat from beginning to end. 9/10

Its filmed in one continuous shot and it makes you feel like you are apart of these two soldiers journey behind enemy lines to warn another company of them walking into a german trap. Best movie I've EVER SEEN. If this doesn't win best cinematography and best picture oscar then something is wrong with Hollywood. Schofield quoting Edward Leer’s poem ‘The Jumblies’ to the Baby was a very apt quotation. ‘Going to sea in a sieve ‘ just about summed up his own predicament on his mission. I also liked that he tried to hush the very young German soldier in order to avoid killing him, on his way through the burning village, which unfortunately he ended up having to do. Even in the midst of war there are glimpses of humanity. These small touches add up to make this such a poignant & moving film, without the need for a load of unnecessary sentimental gush, just tastefully underplayed by the 2 main actors - to bring out the nuances of feeling. Bloody brilliant !

Deakins already won his Oscar, but no other movie this year has cinematography that matches 1917. The part that most impressed me about that "pond shot" was how the water remained completely still and was never disturbed at any point. The camera gets SO CLOSE to the water, you wonder how they got it that close without causing the water to ripple. Did they use a jib arm? A crane? A drone?
