1920's ANTIQUE WALL CLOCK RESTORATION

5 жыл бұрын

In this video you can see how I restored an Antique Wall Clock from the 1920’s.
It is a German made Wall Clock manufactured by the famous and respected brand of JUNGHANS in the 1920’s.
I bought it some years ago in Edremit, Turkey for 10€.
It was in a pretty bad condition and all its wooden decorations were missing.
I managed to replace all the missing decorations with handmade ones which I created out of a couple of old wooden chairs which I found in the garbage.
Unfortunately, the clock mechanism was broken as well… However, recently I was very lucky to find an identical mechanism in an antique market place in Copenhagen, Denmark so I managed to replace it!
Hope you enjoy the video and always remember....Rust is Gold!

This is very cool! However, brass polish and clock movements do not mix, and it isn’t for the reason you thing! Weather the movement is shiny or not does not affect the value of the clock what so ever, however brass polish will gather with the oil in the bushings (little holes) and gunk up the oil and run down the bushings. Best thing to do is to have someone professionally break apart and clean the movement in an ultrasonic tank, which takes away all old oil and dirt and will also make it look nice and shiny! Doing this the clock will run nicely for many years to come. Cheers, cavan. HRS Clock Repair in Solvang, Ca.

I have a 1900 Junghans catalogue and it has a clock almost the same as this. Your clock is older than you think it is. (Which is good. ☺) I have earlier catalogues as well and I'd guess your clock is made from the mid 1890s to the 1900s just before WW1.

I am also restoring an antique wall pendulum clock for a friend. I believe that some parts that look like brass may be painted with a gold paint, may be hot-applied. I am afraid that using a brass cleaner or polisher may take this color away and turn it blackish. Any advise? Thanks in advance

0:47 What made the clock mechanism stop working?
@harryballz6358
@harryballz6358 8 ай бұрын
Lack of oil just like this one will do, it didn't get oiled either. Tiny bushings (12 or so) pressed into both the side plates need oiled every 2-3 yrs or will wear out & it stops them. Main winding springs need disassembled, cleaned & greased then too. Not an easy task! No oils ever needed in their gears, it makes dirt build up and makes them stop. If one is not hung properly they run short periods & stop because the pendulum must swing equally on both sides. Thats what the beat scale inside on bottom is used for. A lot more to these clocks than making it pretty.

Just a leading cause after your basics are followed & it still stops. Once they're hung right & the beat is correct it should continue to run. Those tiny bushings are generally what are neglected especially on hand me down clocks as that info don't get passed along. Btw- You barely oil them, put too much in this causes osmosis to occur. Google: How and where to oil a clock... Peace

How did you travel to Turkey to get an ancient 1920’s clock years ago and then to Denmark to find an identical mechanism?
@RustisGold
@RustisGold 8 ай бұрын
Just out of pure luck! My ancestors are Greeks who used to live in Asia Minor (modern Turkey) until 1922. After the Greek-Turkish war both countries agreed on a population exchange. As a result my ancestors came to Greece as refugees. In one of my trips to Turkey and more specifically to the village where my Grandparents used to live I found this wall clock! Almost 20 years after I had bought the wall clock I was visiting a good friend of mine in Copenhagen. We visited various antique stores and in one of them I found this identical mechanism which was in an excellent condition compared to the one my wall clock previously had!! I couldn't believe my luck!! I wasn't even looking to replace my wall clock's mechanism!! It just happened that I noticed this mechanism in a pile of various old stuff!! ... The right person at the right time!! 😄😊👍 Not to mention that I bought it for a ridiculous amount of money... 😊

I realized that I had placed the dome washer in the wrong position after I had uploaded the video on KZfaq! I put it on the right position, thanks anyway for your help! Finally I didn't open the case because I had done it in the past with the old mechanism and it was quite difficult to put it back so I didn't want to take any risks. I carefully used some high pressured air to clean it. Surprisingly it was quite clean and not rusty at all. Just dusty... I tried to do my best, I had no clock repair experience ever before.
