I think the most telling thing about this look is how it is in black-and-white. Rather than looking as vivid, it looks more like natural shadows, and is even quite subtle (except for the lips, brows, and lashes, but those were probably considered the most important when it came to film due to how expressive they are). Even the bright red rouge looks like a natural contour in black and white!

A cool thing to think about is how beautiful this makeup looked in black and white. The colors seem jarring by today’s standard, but the placement makes so much sense in the era of silent film!
@JamesFluker
@JamesFluker 2 жыл бұрын
What's interesting is that when you put it in black and white, the look suddenly looked very soft and very effective. Given that most photography was still black and white at that point, and films were still in black and white - it definitely feels like the makeup was designed to be effective for photography and motion pictures.

This was definitely not everyday women's makeup, it was for theater and to show their features on screen. All the images of movie stars are not what most of our great, great grandparents would have worn.
@CatrionaCharles
@CatrionaCharles Жыл бұрын
That's what it was for. It was found that facial features didn't really show up on film so they developed this exaggerated technique with bold colours and lines which was the only way they'd show up on camera. In an everyday setting women wouldn't wear makeup like this.

From what I've heard, the over the top colors or sometimes heavy, dark make-up also had to do with film. Movies, photographs,... were all in black and white. And a lot of make up, especially lighter colors, simply doesn't show in black and white. So in order to see it on film, they had to use pretty heavy, bold make up.

My great grandma was a flapper girl. I remember as a young girl (in the 1980s) and teenager (1990s) I could sit and listen to her talk about the 20s, 30s & 40s all day long. We would sit and look at photos of her from those time periods, literally one of the few happy childhood memories. My favorite story was her "love at first sight" story of meeting my great grandpa, they both fell in love at first sight, it was a beautiful love story! I'd love a decades series, especially if you'd do a Lucille Ball inspired look for the 40s or 50s. I also love Erin's collection, the packaging for vintage makeup fascinates me.

Make-up wasn't like that, that's just an artistic drawing. Regular make-up in the 20's was intended to be VERY natural and you wouldn't use any type of eyeliner. Only movie stars would accentuate their eyes like that and it was only for the cameras to get their features, so it was only cinema and theatre make-up. So your granny would probably wear just a bit of powder. It wasn't so difficult to get the fashionable face as it is today, it was mostly the hair that was difficult.

I actually kinda love this makeup? Even if it's so different from today's standards, it has a theatricality to it that really stands out! I'd love to see more decades from the 20th century! Maybe even something historical? And btw, antiek sounds just like antique in french, I wonder if the words come from the same root.

Just gotta say, love the brows. I've always preferred trying to keep my brows looking as natural as possible and I think it really does suit you. If you're looking to do time piece makeup looks, maybe try Victorian era, think that would be really fun even if it will be super hard to get it 100% authentic. I'm a Classical History Major and one of the things we did look at was the beauty standards of women for those days and some of it looks really fun and interesting. Anyway, love the look and effort you put into this, very cool.

My mom, born in 1929, said there was a short phase where very dark brown lipstick was a thing (mid-40s). She tried wearing the look to work. Her boss promptly pulled her into his office and, with reverse psychology, told her just how wonderful and marvelous she looked. He was so over-the-top with it that she got the ‘hint’ and never wore it again! LOVE the blush position! Gotta try it. You honored this ANTIEK look and rocked it. ❤️

I get the blush under the eye for a “youthful” look. It seems a bit extreme in the 20’s but I tend to use a pink toned powder under my eyes (I loved the Becca pink haze one ) and I feel that it brightens my face up and makes me look a lot less tired.

I loved the antiek makeup look. It reminds me of movies from the 1920s and while I'm recovering from my 6th major spinal fusion, my last one was on December 30, 2021 which has been hard to recover from. That's why I enjoy watching your videos, I don't feel very attractive after everything I have been through, so I watch your videos while I am having to lay still while I run my bone stimulator for 2 hours every. It has given me the confidence to put some makeup on, I really like your passion for make up, even for those who can't afford the expensive brands, you explain that some drug store or more affordable brands work just as if not better than the expensive ones. I appreciate your honesty! Sincerely, Ashley Harper

I actually want to try this now, but everything with softer lines, so to speak (and without falsies, because I don't have them). Sometimes I forget that make-up is just having fun and trying out a bunch of stuff instead of getting a "perfect" look. I actually went to a 20's party once and although my brows where too bushy for this, it looked really fun! I didn't know about the blush back then, so I really want to try that :)
