Mt. Clemens’ volunteers have a 1923 Ahrens-Fox that has belonged to the city since new. When there was a fire at Kellett’s five doors from me around 10 years ago, they had it out anyway, and ended up using it as a backup engine on that fire. Mostly, however, it is used in parades and city festivals.

Chain drives were used to allow suspension movement without universal joints. They were simple and quick to maintain in the field, allowed quick changes in final drive ratio, reduced unsprung weight, and allowed use of the drivetrain in different length chassis.

I used to drive a 1929 Buffalo fire truck (Buffalo Fire Appliance Company, Buffalo, NY.) HUGE Waukesha twin-plug motor, one plug fired off a coil and distributor, one off the magneto. Was in active service from 1929 to 1986. Very high-tech for its day- it has four-wheel hydraulic brakes- just not power brakes. To stop quick, you put both feet on the extra-wide brake pedal, grab the bottom of the steering wheel, and stand up! No chain drive, though by '29- standard rear end. That truck pumped for a week straight when the town's main water pump quit. The first couple of nights, they babysat it. After that, they'd just fill up the gas tank at night, come back and check on it a few times a day. My old department still has their old Silsby steam pumper, and that has been restored to operating condition. Next project is to get the old Buffalo pumping again- still runs and drives. And actually, wooden ladders are safer than aluminum ladders or fiberglass ladders. Fiberglass melts and burns much faster than wood, and aluminum will weaken at high temperatures. After a couple of bad accidents, they had to make aluminum ladders stronger, so wooden ladders are now lighter for the same weight. They don't conduct electricity, either.

I remember my fire department using a 2001 Ford F-550/S&S mini pumper to rescue four cows from a frozen pond. Two didn't make it. We actually tied a rope to the cows and pulled them out. The first fire truck I ever drove was a 1976 Dodge Power Wagon/American LaFrance brush truck. The Ford replaced the Dodge.

saw a American lafrance in denmark 4 years ago im a mecanic and love all engines as i remember it was a 28000 ccm engine and the transmission was a chain the guy was looking all over and did find a factory in italy makeing rollercoasters they could make this special chain i did study this freak big engine exhaust was short pipes like in old war plane engines and that torque transfered via a chain like the fiat s76

They still use big chain drives in factories and industrial machinery. The chain and sprockets should be available from industrial supply places. If you keep it oiled it should last practically forever.

American LaFrance was the Pride of Elmira New York When American Machinists were the finest in the world. Elmira is my dads home town and I grew up listening to stories of the industry that originated there. My Grandpa worked in the Eclipse plant until the day he died in 1957, and we are told he set up assembly lines. I believe they made bicycle brakes there, and in WWII they made truck transmissions and machine gun parts. My dad remembers laying in bed at night (during WWII) hearing in the distance the heavy trucks going up and down a test hill trying out the transmissions just installed that day.

Pulling horses out of ditches and muddy holes still goes on in 2018! I was a Health & Safety Officer for a semi rural municipality outside of Vancouver BC. Our fire department rescued horses about 25 times a year. They even had a full sized practice dummy horse called Marco they used to train the new recruits on horse rescue! :)

beautiful! my fire company has a 1924 REO speedwagon that was our first (motorized) fire engine...i cant believe how well the pump and hose worked, you couldve probably knocked alot of fire down with 40 gallons of water back then as everything was made of natural materials such as wood which doesnt burn as hot or as intensely as today's plastics and other petrolium products.

Used to drive and work on a Buffalo Fire Appliance truck that was very similar. That huge Waukesha engine had massive torque, especially if you turned on both plugs. (2 plugs per cylinder, one run off magneto, one run off distributor. Four wheel hydraulic brakes- very advanced for the day. But not power brakes! To stop in a hurry, you put both feet on the wide brake pedal, grab the bottom of the wheel and stand up! That truck pumped for a week straight when the town's main water pump died.

It's true Jay, sometimes horses get stuck in swamps, bogs, rivers, ditches, etc., and have to be pulled out with vehicles or winched out. Less so today as there is less chance of getting stuck. I almost lost a horse that wondered into a quick sand bog area.
