I started looking for a complete house restoration project. In 2003 I bought this 1921 craftsman house in historic Fullerton, California. The house was 1000 sf. and had all the important original bones. Douglas Fir floors throughout, original wood moulding, glass doors knobs, hinges etc. As well a 2 door detached garage witch I made into a large finished extra room. The house had seen better days and was neglected for too long and needed some real attention. Have always been a fan of the Arts & Crafts era.

What an awesome job!! I love to see a home restored. There are so many nice homes abandoned and left to rot, good homes, breaks my heart!

when I say a california bungalow is my dream house, I mean exactly this. I’m glad that there are still people who would rather restore the beauty and history of a house rather than gutting it out. never understood that ..

Fantastic restoration! Thank God you bought it, many others would have gutted/modernized that space. The original woodwork is gorgeous!

Great job! Now that’s a restoration brought back to its former glory, not some cheap “renovation.”

I have a 1914 Craftsman two-story up here in SF Bay Area. She’s needs some work too, not as much as the condition of that house but she has so much beauty and character. We were doing some repair on our front window and the porch columns and the window sash is the most exquisite redwood and cedar siding I mean they certainly don’t build homes like this anymore. We too have those amazing original glass door knobs and original wood cabinets in the kitchen with the maker’s mark. Such a treasure. We haven’t undertaken the remodeling you’ve done but you’ve definitely respected her soul on that one!

This is amazing! Rarely do I see people truly restore a place instead of renovate. You've put the soul back into this home and allowed it to shine again. I'm working on doing the same with my 1923 bungalow. Most of the character in mine was stripped away in the name of modernization, so I'm having to replace a lot of it, but I'm finding it so fulfilling! Salvage shops and lumberyards are my best friends. Borrowing my brother's saw for the project. Maybe I'll share some before and after when I'm done! So far I have the original Douglas Fir floors refinished, and I'm working on re-trimming all the doors and windows in Craftsman-style mouldings, some salvaged and some new, but everything done in the old style. Thank you for this wonderful inspiration! Truly a feast for the eyes!

I could talk to you all day about what you did with this house! I grew up in Garden Grove in a Sears bungalow my parents built by hand in an orange grove, and Santa Ana in two bungalow neighborhoods. We would visit friends Fullerton. They were the GOLDEN YEARS! Now most of those places are gone. The 5 fwy took out my parents house and the Santa Ana Police Department and municipal buildings took out my grandmother's house and the Santa Ana baseball stadium across the street. I wanted to buy a bungalow in Fullerton in the early 80s but that was not to be. I ended up buying a Victorian house reno project in historic Doylestown, PA to escape the ever growing population glut in California. So I appreciate every bit of time, planning, and sensitive effort you put into this home. Been there and done it. Now these homes are being treasured again and what you have done is a wonderful gift to our planet. And a testament to generations to come that newer is not always better. Thank you!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I took this on as a side project because I had a desire to use all the tools in my garage. As I worked through the months I committed myself to a full restoration. I truly enjoyed the researching and the looking for and finding all aspects of needed elements, door hinges, claw foot tub, even a 1928 bakelite wall phone. The interest and contributions from all the neighbors was overwhelming. I still look for another but the market and the economy has made it difficult. Not to mention the banks. Thanks again.

Beautiful job! I've been slowly restoring my 1922 Craftsman house over 4 years. It's expensive to simplify and undo a century of "improvements". It's only from the "scars" left behind and a set of floor plans I found that I can even imagine how it looked originally. Great work!

Just beautiful. I've always felt a knife cutting my heart when I've seen the unbelievably gorgeous wood being painted. I am so grateful you spent the hours removing the paint! And yes California property values have gone through the roof and exploded beyond that! That's so sad, not only can I no longer afford to live in San Jose or Milpitas where I grew up, but the renovations of homes people wish to flip have changed those wonderful homes in ways not meant by the designers, let alone the craftsman who made these homes treasures.

Homes built in better times - Back when homes had a soul - Life was at an easier pace - Not like the cut throat pace we are at now - Having £ Millions $ is not enough - Nor £ Billions $ to those where Greed is the word ! These individuals will strive to acheive these obscene amounts at whatever detriment to fellow man ! How wonderful It would be to own a plot of land - Build your own timber home like one of these - With your own bare hands - To be able to live with your beautiful wife and a couple of kiddies - Pet dog maybe ! - Sit on the porch together and see the sun rise in the morning & Watch it set in the evening ! - And have enough food to feed those small mouths ! - Thats all we need ! - That would be heaven ! Very interesting watching your video thankyou ! SB British Isles

Nice reno! (THANKS for the Mozart, too!) The work you did making window frames yourself was especially impressive. I also liked that you turned the garage into an additional room. There was no mention of the condition of the plumbing and wiring; I assume it was in its original state and had to be replaced to meet modern codes? As many others have said in comments, I too love Craftsman bungalows and it's my dream to live in one someday!

Thank you for your posting. It was very rewarding. Had all the electrical redone to code. I spent a few days crawling under the house to redo all the plumbing, fun times. Lucky for me I was redoing the only bathroom and the kitchen as you see in the video so all plumbing was exposed and easier to replace. These old craftsman homes had so much more character than todays homes...funny enough most of these houses in the area from the 1920s came from a catalogue, go figure.

Recently purchased a 1920s California Craftsman bungalow as a rental property and I wanted to ask if there are any specific resources to look at in order to keep it true to it's history, we currently have a short term tenant so we can save a bit more for the renovation, and the previous owner carpeted and tiled the floors, so I'm curious about what's under the current floors.

I was lucky I was able to lift the carpet to see what was there. You can only hope when you get a chance to do so. My reference was books I bought online at Amazon on Craftsman Homes , kitchens and baths, these books were very helpful with lots of pictures and even some great resources at the back about where to find vintage materials and supplies. Living in LA there are a few salvage locations around town that stockpile vintage materials from homes that where up for demo, I would image that most cities would have something like that. Good luck.

The window frames in the "after" are too big and make the place seem smaller. The dark wood colour's also off and adds to the claustrophobic essence.
