This is the 12.45pm service from Paddington to Hereford from the summer of 1925. As was often the case with express services on the GWR, although the designated destination is Hereford, parts of the train served other places
in the West Midlands such as Worcester, Kidderminster and Stourbridge.
The final coach is a 'slip' coach, the use of which was a speciality of the GWR. These unusual vehicles ran at the back of selected express trains and enabled the train to serve destinations where it did not stop. The slip coach on our Hereford train would have been slipped at Kingham and then worked over the Banbury to Cheltenham line to Cheltenham.

Another aspect is that those slip coaches got to get back to the start point of their travel to begin the ride, shunted together in the same formation, again!

Awesome again, but I understood that The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway had slip trains first (eg Rochdale Station), which was unusual for them as their practice was to look at why LNWR (and other pre-grouping railways) creations were failing and build their concepts better. An example, L&YR had been faffing about with steam powered coaches when GWR created mechanical Auto Trains, the L&YR came up with non-mechanical control systems for Auto Trains, which under LMS could consist of a Push-Pull train up to but rarely 6 coaches but normally 1, 2 or 4 coaches

Another superb video. By the way, the wonderful Pete Waterman gives you an 'up there to be admired' mention about 22.23 into this video about a current, 2022 layout he's built, now on display. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mZlynJB6md-Zqas.html. You get a thumbs up, as he talks about scale, inclines, viaducts, flyovers and realistic goals for his project, with Hornby's 'Behind The Buffers' team. Met him last year at this same venue. Now he's back again with another huge layout. We chatted for ages, as he walked over, obviously so passionate. Managed to get a pic with him, after a full day of running, which now proudly features on my page banner. Great advocate for this endearing, creative hobby, like your good selves.
