The Dragon Coaster opened in 1929, one year after it's notorious neighbor, the Aeroplane Coaster, which makes several appearances in the background of this clip. The Dragon Coaster still exist today, more than 80 years later. This clip came from a series of old MovieTone newsreel clips I have had for years on VCR tape.

One thing I loved about that period in time is that people dressed up to do EVERYTHING. The men are wearing suits and hats and the women, dresses and shawls. There's something very cool about that.

Yeah, they had more morals and class years ago, whereas today many don't and will stab you in the back first chance they get.

But what’s with at the beginning of the ride everyone is pretty much silent what was with peoples enthusiasm on rides back then??, nowadays it’s like everyone screams and shouts yeahhh!!! Or just scream in general for just about the entire ride I notice that lol

Filming on a roller coaster with 35mm film in 1929 was a major undertaking. Add audio and wow. The batteries alone were huge.

How are you sure it was 35mm and not 8mm (or 16mm) with audio gear?

I was thinking the same thing. To spend money on photographing something like this was expensive. Only the wealthy could afford to burn cash on a FILM such as this, but I'm glad they did.

And the film back then was highly flammable nitrate film that could easily torch a crowded movie theater. Unfortunately many theater fires were started due to the flammable film stock of that era.

Its great this park is still open when so many smaller parks have closed the last 40 years. Those folks that rode that roller coaster had hard times after 1929 as the Great Depression started.

So you must know when Playland closed? I went there as a kid in the 60's and went back in the 80's sometime and it was closed, but can't remember the specific year. I believe it has since reopened.

It's a shame that the 1st downhill is cut-out, and you can't get a good view of the dragon's mouth... if there even was one in 1929! Amazing footage. Where did you get this? Hard to believe there's audio too for `29!

YAYA Playland, best place ever, I love how right next to the ride they have one of the original carts sitting there. It was so cool sitting in it to get to see what the original actually looked like.

I wish they ran the original trains. The Morgan trains they run today are quite light and thus you go through the course slower and the ride is less intense. I can understand from a maintainance perspective why they'd change it out but I'll just say if they can afford to keep the original trains running on the Coney Island Cyclone that seems to generally be a walk on these days, Playland could do the same on Dragon Coaster.

It's not about the speed of the roller coaster. It's the acceleration that makes a ride intense. The Dragon Coaster is tame because its drops aren't very steep, and its turns are wide and high off the ground. The Airplane Coaster was about the same size, but it featured rapid changes of direction and hellish spirals.

The “Airplane” is the best coaster rip!I wish Playland would remake it on its original spot.I have seen this park have many different coasters that were removed or dint operate for long.I wish they would expand towards the land, going to the marsh in between the paddle boat lake and the sound.God,I used to go 3 times a week all year around with my friends. We would take our dates there practically my whole town would be there. All my friends worked there during the summer. In the winter we ice skate at the arena. The rangers practiced there aswell.I remember drinking my 40 oz of ole E there on the board walk and would get a reading from the original Zoltar from big It was on the board walk headed toward the beach...What incredible days in west Chester ny and my second hometown of 10573!

I went on this when I was a kid, at 14 years of age and they forgot to strap me down and it's a lot faster now then it was back then. I had to hold on for dear life as I was thrown out of my seat 3 times, I had one leg off the side of it, and I almost died.

Was it 1989? It's possible. Wikipedia says the early 80s, but I remember riding the old ones which were red and black in 1986-1987. The front portion of the coaster was upright. The aerodynamic turquoise ones were replaced soon after.
