This organ was cited by the OHS in 2008 as an historic instrument worthy of preservation. The console updates were done by Quimby in 2009.

What an absolutely exquisite instrument. It is unfortunate that more organists don’t appreciate this vintage style.

Not necessarily, there are organists and organ enthusiasts who are absolutely passionate about the sound of older pipe organs and making sure that they are still appreciated for years to come.

It's nice to hear the many beautiful soft voices of these instruments, but it would sure be nice to hear them in their full splendour at least once in these videos. The pipe organ can be so thrilling at full throttle.

As an Aeolian owner, I very much enjoyed this analysis. Perhaps a full restoration of this organ will happen. Aeolian really built character into their instruments. The coloration is broad without being harsh. Fullness of tone with an underlying warmth is the hallmark. I knew immediately when the clarinet was demonstrated that it was not a free reed. There is nothing wrong with the beating reed in this instrument, but Brent and Travis need to experience the Aeolian free reed, and they will never have to go the chamber to find out which type it is. Earlier there was a comment about the 8' harp. In my instrument, the Harp is indeed an 8' stop, but only available at TC. The 8' octave plays one octave higher as the bars a 8' first octave would really get strange and soft.

What an absolutely gorgeous instrument. Those reeds are "Voice of God" grade. This instrument deserves a complete "going though" every much as any Skinner of same vintage.

Thanks for the interior views. I don't know how a tuner or service person can work in such a confined space without knocking everything off kilter. Must take a special type of technician who is extremely patient and careful.

According to OHS, this organ has 43 ranks. Very few 43 rank organs will have *three* 16' principal ranks! This instrument also has every non-Baroque color reed you could possibly want. I hope they get some of the issues ironed out.

I’m not terribly organ knowledgeable. Could you explain what you mean by a “cipher” pipe or chest? I do know what both pipe and chest mean. From context, I gather that “cipher” means some sort of malfunction, but I don’t understand what sort of malfunction.
@speedstick77
@speedstick77 4 жыл бұрын
"Cipher" is a valve malfunction where the pipe does not shut off and continues to sound as long as the wind is on. In emergencies a swift rap to the chest may dislodge the pesky valve. In larger pipes a handkerchief in the mouth works. These, of course, are not permanent solutions, but during a worship service the congregation will be grateful. During the sermon? Well, you can guess.........

There's an old joke. A Lutheran minister hears from his tuner that the organ in the Catholic church has a cipher. Later he calls the tuner & says "I've been giving it thought, and the church board agrees with me. If the Catholics have a cipher in their organ, we need one too- and we don't care how much it costs!"

A leak in a chest valve that lets air into the pipe. Thus, the pipe speaks continuously whether wanted or not.

Maybe not the best demo but be nice guys, sometimes it’s hard to improvise and come up with something while going through all the stops. Maybe he was also in a hurry so we can’t make assumptions about musical skill just based on this video. Cool organ either way!

Thanks. Very interesting and rich-sounding older American instrument. Just needs a Sesquialtera/Cornet stop, and a big Great Mixture, (and maybe a 32' Contre Bourdon and 32' Posaune extensions) ! 😁👍 ❤️

Why does it need anything. Are you more clever than the tonal people at Aeolian? If you change this instruments then I guess you would add chapters to "Of Mice and Men" or perhaps "Treasure Island. Why can't people take organs as the builder left them. They are works of art and as such should not be touched except to be restored and maintained.

Those skinny vox Celeste pipes are something good. Tuned slightly off pitch to create a vibrato effect when played with other string sounding stops.

It is too bad that there are not as a demands for classical church organs any more, especially real pipe organs. The very first pipe organ that I had played on, was a Wicks pipe organ. The problem with real pipe organs are tempreture changes, tuning, electronics and mechanical. Nothing beats the real thing, but cost much more than a digital organ. I have seen many catholic churches in Texas replace their organs with black acoustic grand pianos, which seems to be more popular churches today.

Pat Saxon If chamber space is temperature controlled, 95% of tuning problems are eliminated. George Wright proved this with his Hollywood Philharmonic organ, the chamber space had it's own temperature control system. Architects never consider such in designing a building.

In my city of 65k residents, the largest Catholic church in town has no organ, electronic or otherwise. There are only five pipe organs in town, and one is a hybrid, and one is an electronic that controls a few ranks of pipes. It's a sad state of affairs.

Jim Morgan I have to agree. In fact I find the scenario where the interviewer takes charge of the demonstration to be demeaning for the person most capable of doing so; the organist. If an organist is not capable of improvising, then he should use a score.
