1932 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental 54MS in Bordeaux Paint on My Car Story with Lou Costabile

On "My Car Story" we're in Geneva IL at The Geneva Concours d’Elegance on 8-23-15.
We're looking at a 1932 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental 54MS in Bordeaux paint.
The car's Owner is Dr. Andrew Bellis. Andrew’s had the car handed down from his Father David and Mother Brenda. They have had the car since 1988, and the car was found in bad condition, however David being an Engineer designed the car, and the car was built by Steve Penny.
The original car was a Barker Sadanca-de-Vile, and a Paris show car. The Phantom 2 was manufactured from 1929 to 1935; and the Continental is the most desirable in the series.
The engine is a 7.7 liter straight 6 with 2 spark plugs per cylinder, one plug coil, and the other a magneto. Chassis number is 54MS, with engine number ZL85.
This car has won many trophies including; best in show in Chicago, best in class twice, most elegant twice, and the Colleen Creech Trophy twice at the Rolls Royce Enthusiast Club " RREC" Concourse in England.

WOW! THIS JAZZ AGE CAR HAS EVERYTHING WHICH THE WORLD WAS PASSING THROUGH WITH MUCH ENERGY OF THE TIME. IT LOOKS GREAT AND FLASHY AS A BRASS AGE BOMB. WHO WOULDN´T LOVE THIS CAR? INDEED.

Beautiful car! I've never been a fan of the solid rims, but other than that, it's beautiful, or should I say, in spite of the solid rims it's beautiful. It's quite a car. WOW!

These are not solid rins, but hub-caps/wheel covers over wire-wheels. These were popular options due to muddy/slushy English roads. They may have added an iota of aerodynamics as well?

This is a fabulous motor car - stunningly beautiful and a great credit to its owners and creators. My only query is that the RR emblem on the radiator would surely have been red as in 1932 F. H. Royce was still alive, the colour changed to black following his death in 1933. In the 50's my father had a 1932 20/25 Landaulet; I was 8 years old but he explained all the controls and features including autovac, dynamo, magneto and the very recognisable spanner to remove the road wheels! We travelled in Europe for summer holidays including the Austrian Grossglockner High Alpine Road several times - some great memories. Thanks for posting this video.

The mascot is called the Spirit of Ecstasy not the flying lady and those are coach doors not suicide doors.

Peter, In the UK it's usually called The Spirit of Ecstacy indeed, but The Flying Lady is also correct, and is used more in the USA. Actually, the shape of it on the USA-produced Rolls-Royces is slightly different, that is a little bit more prone. "Suicide door" is a slang term which is popularized in the custom car trade, but is avoided by major car manufacturers, and is called "coach door" indeed by Rolls Royce, or "FlexDoors" by Opel, etc.

There is also the "kneeling" variation of this mascot, found on Phantom III, Silver Wraiths and Silver Dawn's, (1953-54) which had standard " Pressed Steel" bodywork, and were mostly U.S. export cars.

I assume this is a reproduction Owen Gurney-Nutting body? King Carol of Romania had one.The Ali Khan received one as a 21st birthday gift (nice!.) His dad, the Aga Khan had one of the royal/head-of-state only Phantom IVs, with I think, French, Franay bodywork?

It is a very beautifully built car, but I do not see it as a restoration as it is nothing like the original car. I know these expensive cars, back then, were all custom builds onto a factory chassis and drive train. But for me a restoration is to bring the car back as it was originally built. This is a totally different car, a two door convertible from the original four door closed sedan. How can it win awards against faithfully restored Rolls Royce Phantom IIs???

The cars of this era, including the Ford Model A, are becoming ever more attractive to me. Perhaps, it has to do with today's mostly ugly designs which contrast ever more greatly against that of earlier cars
